In a country where life expectancy is less than 47 years, turning 50 years becomes a landmark age worth celebrating. So it was for Mr. Tunji Olugbodi, GMD/CEO Verdant Zeal group who turned 50 recently.
Born and raised in Lagos, TJ as he is fondly called by close friends and family members, began his educational career at Salvation Army School in Surulere. At a very young age, he alone amongst seven brothers and one sister was whisked from Lagos to Osun State to go attend boarding school. He resumed at Ejigbo Baptist High School, Osun State where he had his secondary education. Going to boarding school he confesses, made him become his own man and that decision by his parents exposed him to certain experiences that he is still thankful to God for today. His experience in the Baptist community did not end there. He later enrolled at the Ede Baptist High School, where he had his A-levels. He wrapped up his tertiary education at the then Ogun State University. He has since followed up with several professional courses and he is a member of several organizations.
Although the husband of Biyi is a soft, easy-going fellow, when it comes to business, he brings to the table an unmatched zeal and passion for finding innovative ways of breaking new grounds and going against the grain.
It was a gentleman with fine manners who threw his doors open to the Allure team as he opens up on life at 50!

What is life like at 50? Life at 50 is a landmark. Frankly, all I feel is
gratitude to God for bringing me thus far. I feel privileged by all the outpouring of love and affection. I feel very honoured by the calibre of people who have celebrated with me but the important thing is that one feels grateful to God.
What has the journey to 50 been like?
ups and downs. I have had my challenges. I have had my seasons of highs and lows but I think, above everything else, if one looks back and takes stock, I think there is every reason for one to be thankful for some of the experiences one has had that have been helpful in navigating the
open doors for one. People have mentored one. People have facilitated for one and stood in the gap for one. I look back and see what I have been able to contribute myself
wake up call that there is still a lot of work to be done. I just have this realisation that time is
the world.
Now that you have hit 50, what are your thoughts?
My thought really is trying to do a lot more than I have done in the past. But the reality is that inevitably, I need to start slowing down. I have a few things I aspire to do. I want to be able to read more, study more, break some new grounds and achieve certain things; not just for my community
all those things on time.
Are you one of those people who get spiritual and philosophical as they get older?
I think it is inevitable that you really need to get
time so to say. There are certain basic realities that we are confronted with but the truth is also that it is not when you are getting old that you should think about it. In fact, the Bible encourages us to remember the Lord in the days of our youth. So those who are young are even
thinking about it. The truth is that without realizing it, I have gone round the bend so I need to look at
about life.
Would you say your current life resembles the 50 of your dreams?
you just trust God as you move on and progress.
His grace that has kept us this far. Then, the no part is that, if I also look at what
has happened around me, especially in our nation, from when I started schooling, it looks like everything has nose-dived. For me, that aspect is not something to be celebrated. It is something that is of great concern. As one progresses, things should be getting better instead, the reverse is the case. If you look at education, infrastructure, safety and security, health services; everything seems to be heading south instead of getting better as the human race progresses towards digital age. We should be breaking new grounds as far as technology can offer.
If you have to do things differently, what would it be?
I think it would be to be a little more pragmatic in some of the decisions that I had
really.
What has life taught you?Life has taught me that it is not a wall of thorns
I do know is that God has given us grace to be able to confront and overcome those situations and circumstances. So, we should always be prepared to understand that life will happen. It is how we confront it that determines what happens next. I think really, at the end of the day, there is a

What was growing up like and how has it shaped your present?
Growing up, for me, was not anything extra-ordinary. I come from a middle-class family. Our father started out as a teacher and later worked in the Central Bank. My mother was a business
that we were practically a family of boys. There are eight of us and one girl and she is the last

She was and still is a strict disciplinarian. With her, everything a woman should do, she compelled us to do them. So, we know how to

Why did your parents decide to send you to boarding a school?
went to Baptist Academy in Lagos. I was the only one that went to boarding school but I like it because I think it brought out the man in me, having to fend for myself. There was no pipe borne water so we had to walk long distances to fetch water. We had to do manual labour.

You have people like Professor Wole Soyinka, known not just for his erudition but for the discipline that he has brought on.
So, business is really about that lifestyle and

I don’t have enough information about you i.e. your age, work experience, occupation, number of dependents etc, to make an informed judgment, however compared to majority of Nigerians; you are actually earning a reasonable salary. According to statistics the average Nigerian lives on less than $2 a day.
According to David Bach “the problem is not how much you earn but how much you spend”.
Typically the main issue is spending habits. In my opinion more money would not necessarily solve the problem. The key thing is to learn to manage what is available which in this case is the N150, 000. There are people who can squander N1,000,000 a day because they have bad spending habits. According to Luke 16:10 Whoever is faithful with very little is also faithful with a lot. A person who can manage as little as N50,000, would manage N50,000,000
would most likely squander N50,000,000.

Ace broadcaster and Publisher of TW magazine, Mrs. Adesuwa Onyenokwe, is the Vlisco Woman of the year 2014. She was announced winner at the second edition of the Vlisco Women’s month awards held last Sunday at the Federal Palace Hotel, Lagos. The event which is part of Vlisco’s effort at celebrating inspiring women during the month of March was well attended by women from all walks of life.
The show began with poems rendition and choreography performances “tagged Phenomenal Woman” eulogizing the qualities of a woman. This year’s theme, “Dare to dream”, paid tribute to women who, despite all odds, have the faith and courage to realise their dreams. Nominees for this category were three successful and outstanding women in different fields who were honored, they are: Dr. Olamide Orekunrin, of the Flying Doctor fame, Ace broadcaster and publisher of TW Magazine, Mrs. Adesuwa Onyenokwe and Esther Agbarakwe, a climate change expert.
The presentation of the awards to the recipients was occasionally interjected with fashion shows featuring chic short and long dresses with ultra feminine cuts, all made with the African prints designed by three Nigerian designers; House of Jasmine, Fifi O and Taofik Yahaya of TFK Creations. The segment also saw the nominees strut their stuff on the runway decked in outfits created by these designers.
A brief talk on the power of a woman’s dream by Ezine Akudo, Miss Nigeria 2013, was followed by a question and answer session moderated by Nollywood star Stephanie Linus, who is the face of this year’s campaign, asking the awardees how they thrive in Nigeria despite all odds. There was a musical interlude by Jodie the kushi-kushi crooner, which saw all the ladies in the audience wearing Vlisco fabric strut their stuff on the runway, with Oji Osula and Jenika Mukoro emerging winners of the segment. It was also a day of glory for winners of the Vlisco Fashion dream Fund, where new designers are encouraged to pitch their business plan, which explains their fashion dream, to Vlisco. According to the organizers, the said fund was set up to help and encourage aspiring fashion designers in West and Central Africa to achieve their dream. The three winners in this category were; Sophie Alozie, Chioma Igbokwe and Kumbi Idowu.
Out going Vlisco Woman of the year 2013, Mrs. Eugenia Abu while congratulating the nominees, said it is always beautiful to see women achieving. “I congratulate Vlisco, they have held my hand in the last one year and they have increased my fashion forwardness by giving me the fabrics to wear time and again, and to show that a woman can be brilliant and still be fashionable’. She advised designers to hold dear our culture and to collaborate with Vlisco to push our fabrics.
High point of the event was the announcement of the Vlisco woman of the year 2014, by Group Commercial Development Director of Vlisco, Mr. Andrew Connelly who pronounced Mrs. Adesuwa Onyenokwe winner of the Vlisco Woman of the Year. The event sponsored by Baileys Irish Cream was wrapped up with an electrifying musical performance by Waje, who got the audience on their feet.
