Ottawa, Canada

Confederation Line is the $2 billion Light Rail Transit (LRT) line that will be the cornerstone of Ottawa’s integrated transit network. Phase One of the project is a 12.5 km section that

includes a 2.5 km tunnel under the downtown core.

Scope of Work

NLT was asked to engineer a complete wireless communications and tracking solution for the tunnel portion:

• Line-powered, 2-radio/2-fibre, port nodes, with battery back-up, and internal heaters• NLT Compact Nodes for installation on each of the 3 Sandvik roadheaders

• 50 Aeroscout Wi-Fi Tracking Tags to be used for tracking site personnel and assets• 30 NLT Ranger VoIP phones

Challenges

Activity at all three construction sites needed to be monitored simultaneously at the Project Command

Centre; the tracking data from the portals was transmitted to the Command Centre via dedicated DSL lines

routed through the Internet Service Provider (ISP).

NLT works with our global network of partners to deliver solutions that ensure tunnelling operations around the world are constructed safely and efficiently, on-time and on-budget.

The North West Rail Link is a $1.4 billion heavy rail rapid transit project that will form part of

Sydney’s new rapid transit network.

Scope of Work

• Wi-Fi coverage within the tunnel • A robust personnel, vehicle and asset tracking solution

• Environmental monitoring of gases, dust, wind, temperature and humidity within the tunnel

• Built-in IP intercom in the NLT CAN (Comms/Area Network) module allows easy voice communication and can be used to trigger

emergency evacuation and fire alarms

Challenges

The construction contractor required six independent communication solutions – one per

section – each with different hardware platforms. These were fully integrated for simple

remote monitoring
