Kvaerner Hydro is the organisation comprising thosedivisions within Kvaerner Brug A/S of Norway, whichare concerned with Hydro Electric Power and WaterControl applications and its subsidiaries SorumsandVerksted A/S in Norway, NOHAB-KMW Turbin AB inSweden, Kvaerner Hydro Power Inc. in the U.S.A.and Boving & Co. Limited and Boving NewtonChambers Ltd., in the United Kingdom.
Kvaerner Brug is one of the main companies of theprivately owned Kvaerner Industrier A/S, which isamongst the largest industrial groups in Norway, withactivities ranging from oil and gas to fish processingand environmental protection as well as shipping andshipbuilding.
The operation of all the Kvaerner Hydro companiesis closely co-ordinated and the technology andexperience of each is available to all. Productsavailable include:

TrainingAll services associated with hydro installations.
Since 1848, when our first turbine was delivered,Kvaerner Hydro companies have deliveredthousands of hydro turbines, totalling over 80,000MW in output. Continuous improvement anddevelopment enables us to offer hydro turbines of alltypes and associated mechanical equipment of themost modern design for the smallest as well as thelargest projects.
Hydraulic and mechanical research, developmentand design is carried out in our modern laboratoriesand by experienced engineers using the latestcomputer techniques.
Brochures giving descriptions of our laboratoryfacilities and all of our products are available onrequest.
VuuuTURBINES
Now designed for heads in excess of 600 metres thesingle stage pump turbine has superseded theoriginal idea of separate coupled pumps, turbinesand generators which is now rarely used.
Work on the first hydraulic and mechanical design ofa single stage pump turbine began in 1958 resultingin the two highly successful units at Cruachan. Sincethen we have designed, manufactured and installeda number of units at various sites, these include theunit at Juktan which was the largest machine of thistype in the world.
The brochure on our Hydraulic Turbine Laboratoryillustrates our excellent facilities for model testingpump turbines.
The mechanical design of single stage pumpturbines has proceeded in parallel to the hydraulicdevelopment and has seen such design changes asthe introduction of friction devices in the guideapparatus instead of the original breaking links andsimilarly the shaft seal of the radial carbon glandtype has been replaced by a highly effective axialseal. With our previous experience and ongoingdevelopment we are able to supply all sizes of thistype of turbine.
This reference list gives the main design data of allpump turbines ordered which have been designedand/or manufactured completely or partly byourselves.
Column headings in the table refer to:
Year:
Head:
Output:
The year in which the order wasreceived.
Rated net turbine head.
Maximum power developedduring continuous operation.
Pump discharge: The rated pump discharge.
Pump head: The maximum pump head.
Runner diameter: The smallest inside diameter ofthe runner band.

The full range of turbinesApart from Pump turbines we also produce a
full range of turbines in sizes from 0.3MW to thevery largest sizes.
Control EquipmentWe produce a range of electro-hydraulic control
units together with complementing oil pressureunits suitable for all types of turbines.
Gates & PenstocksSince the design, delivery and installation of our
first gate in 1880, we have supplied most types ofgates ranging in size from 200mm to 38.6m span toover 50 countries. We have produced penstocks ofa wide variety of diameter with wall thicknesses upto 90m in high tensile steels for static heads up to1186m.
This page shows only part of our range ofproducts. Our scope of supply also includes:Refurbishment and Upgrading, Repair, TrainingSchemes and Special Products for Hydro Services, please apply for the appropriate brochures.
KB 910.78-1 Produced by Warwickshire Illustrations Ltd., Coventry, England.
ValvesI n addition to lattice blade butterfly and spherical
valves for turbine isolation and penstockprotection, we produce a variety of different typesof valves for a wide range of water control duties.
Rack Cleaning EquipmentWe produce a variety of rack cleaning equipment
covering the range of 2.0m to 4.0m width and withrake clearances up to 1200mm.
