PLANETAIRS HIGHDENSITY AERATORS

PlanetAir has introduced the High Density 50 Towand the High Density 50 PTO aerators which can pro-duce a 12-in hole with a 2x2-in spacing at a rate of12 acres per hour The patented coring tine cuts clean

cores at the surface and shatters the soil below This results in up to 90 less cleanup just aerate and mow The results are more durable dense and playable turf dueto the intense root zone aeration The shatter knife technology combined with theplanetary motion creates pore space through your root zone with virtually no surfacedisruption You can aerate circles around a pitchers mound gold post or difficult cor-ners while the aerator is working in the ground without tearing turfPlanetAir Turf Products LLC877-800-884SFor information circle 084 orsee httpwwwonersimscas063-084

Nothing bu e Bestarly this summer I was at one of our University turfgrass field daysAt these events visitors come to our research and demonstrationareas to visit with University faculty and staff and view our latest

research trials and listen to our education sessions I figured by the time nearly400 people heard my four 20-minute talks and asked questions that I wouldhave a long list of material for this QampA column

So group after group came by I mademy points and we discussed various athleticfield turf issues Among the attendees wereboth athletic field managers and coachesAfter each group left I jotted down a fewnotes related to their questions before thenext group arrived On the drive home I start-ed reading through their questions and madewhat I considered to be an interesting discov-ery Most of their questions started withWhat is the best

The following are examples of actualquestions

What is the best grass to have on an ath-letic field

What is the best mowing height forTifway Bermudagrass

What is the best fertilizer to use on afield

What is the best product to control [fill inthe blank]

It seems to be human nature to wantnothing but the best no one wants to wastetime using the seconded rated product Ofcourse it is not in the tradition of a researcherto cut to the chase and proclaim there is onlyone best of anything Each question providedme an opportunity to explain why there isoften not a best or ideal at least not withouta thorouqh evaluation of the situation

Take for instance the first question relat-ed to grass selection This question is oftenasked immediately after I mention field usecapacity and recovery People are alwayslooking for a new grass that can take theextreme wear and compaction received bymost high school and municipal multi-usefields This is one of the reasons artificial turfis making a comeback But I do not believe there is currently a best grass Wehave a number of great grasses available that can handle a reasonable amountof wear and tear when they are managed properly Of course some grasses arebetter in some situations than others but those situations can change duringthe year or season So it is virtually impossible to crown one grass as best

When the Tifway question was being asked I was standing on aBermudagrass area mowed at about one-half inch A couple of attendees askedif I endorsed that low of a mowing height I do not believe that a mowingheight should be selected arbitrarily Mowing height should be determinedwhile considering a number of other factors including the sport played on thefield performance expectations level of maintenance mower type and grass

50 August 2005

I do not believe there is a best height for a grass I often see TifwayBermudagrass on athletic fields mowed at heights between 12-inch and 2 inch-es A field will perform very differently on each end of this range A field man-ager has to find a height that is manageable and also acceptable for the playersand coaches That height may need to be adjusted during the year to meet spe-cific turf or performance requirements Typically as the mowing height goes

down the level of attention from the turfmanager must go up

What is the best fertilizer is a rela-tive question The determinant of best fer-tilizer is often influenced by fertilizer priceplant needs and turf managers ability tomanage applications For non-nitrogeninputs a quick soil test can determineneed based on what is currently availablein the soil The question on nitrogen carri-er is often dictated on desired responsetime (greening) and amount of moneyavailable to spend

A grass plant is not as choosy aboutwhat it takes up as we humans are withwhat we eat Your grass is a little likeMikey from the old cereal commercials-it eats anything Generally the productsthat result in nitrogen released over aperiod of time and do not require as fre-quent application compared to the quicklyavailable sources cost a little more Ioften tell turf managers that with all otherthings being equal the best nitrogen fer-tilizer to use is the cheapest per pound ofnitrogen as long as they are willing toration the delivery

Without even addressing the lastquestion I am sure you can predict wherethis is heading In many cases there maynot be a IJ best IJ

On this back page each month DrMinner and I try to provide you withanswers to your questions More oftenthan not our answers provide more thanone option In the process of answeringyour questions we often challenge read-ers to evaluate their own situations and

apply the information as best they can to solve their problems at that momentWhen dealing a biological system such as growing turfgrass there are notalways specific formulas to follow that will provide 100 percent consistentresults In the end we may have to follow advice once provided by FranklinRoosevelt We do our best that we know how at the moment and if it does-nt turf out we modify it ST
