Interior Design Tips for your Office Space Posted by Warren Foster-Brown

Office space has come a long way from regimented layouts of rows of desks and chairs. Humdrum and hierarchical are no longer a description of the modern office! With today’s highly advanced technical options, office layout and design has

become more relaxed, fun and a multifunctional space. Here are some interior design tips that I think you should keep in mind when designing your office.

1. Mobility:

I think that creating work modules for employees on the move or

visiting other satellite offices is important. In one of our recent projects, we

created ‘mobile’ workstations which can be locked and stored away when not

in use – something which is also ideal for Hong Kong and offices in this city

with limited space.

2. Home Away from Home:

I like to approach office design with more of a residential feel, a home away from

home if you will. Such as a quiet space equipped with low table, overstuffed

armchairs and handy sockets for power signals the rejection of the conventional

office.

3. Different Zones:

I think that designated zones are key. Look at

braking up the space to offer different functions and

chances for the mind to refresh. Areas such as a break

out pantry or a relaxing and airy chill-out zone can work

so well. You don’t need walls to separate areas, book

cases or large green plants can do the trick here. It’s

great to have vibrant meeting rooms, both formal and

informal are important to invigorate the brain. Or if you

are tight on space, why not have a multifunctional space,

designed to be used for informal meetings / relaxing

spot for a coffee break / dining setting for an evening

event.

4. Use of Space:

Make the most of what you’ve got! In a project we worked on recently, every

square inch of the 2,590sqft was used, including the generous window ledge which

we turned into a window seat. Diminishing the scale of unwanted but necessary

columns is also a clever way to create the illusion of a bigger space, I recommend to

do this with reflective materials and/ or designing cabinetry to encompass them. I

feel an open plan office executes the best use of space, try and move away from,

enclosed desk spaces.

5. Use of Daylight:

In a recent project we undertook for the Bone Marrow Donor Programme

offices in Singapore, a recent CSR programme we were involved in, private

offices were required by the client, but a full height glass wall was incorporated

to best retain the natural light emulating throughout the entire space. Dimmer

lights are also nice to create just the right atmosphere from day to night.

6. Be Creative with Colour:

Remember that the colour one chooses for an

office space can have a dramatic effect on your clients

and other visitors. These effects are subliminal and

instinctive, creating either a good or bad perception of

your business. I would recommend selecting vibrant

and fresh colours and those that and very much

showcase your company energy and what you

represent.

7. Personalise:

Use your organizations or brands flair to add some

touches of your personality to the space. For example,

express yourself via a giant, vibrant, full wall mural. We

worked with a client recently to showcase the clients’

message of ‘’life, love and the pursuit of happiness”.

8. Fun with Furniture:

Custom pieces of furniture can also be introduced to give a more residential

and relaxed feel, they also help to add some further personality. I would

recommend trying to work the colours and textures of the furniture into the overall

design. This can also add to the illusion of space. For offices, furniture can be light

and contemporary. The furniture can have a colour feature, such a chair with a

colourful headrest that can complement the paintwork or art on the walls. Custom

light fittings can also act as pieces of art and can really add some flair and fun!
