LOVE RAVINE The winding stretch of the Madona river from the library to the fountain pond is called Love Ravine. It is a popular walking trail with the beautiful river, the steep relief of the ravine and the big city fountain. There is also a small playgroung for children.

It has been housing Madona culture centre for several decades. Large reconstruction work was carried out after storm had torn off its roof in 2005. The culture house is a place of different events and amateur performances. In its annexe there are studios of Children and Youth Centre.

Madona and its surroundings is one of the most popular Latvian winter recreation areas, we even call Madona the Latvian winter capital. This is supported by the hilly terrain and stability of natural snow cover, and well equipped ski resorts, where international competitions take place. In winter the snow cover is on average 20 cm thicker and winter lasts for a month longer than elsewhere in Latvia. Skiing traditions have also a noteworthy history: national cross-country ski competi-tions were organized in Madona already in the 1930s, while since 1961 cross-country skiing and biathlon are included in Madona Children and Youth Sport School program. The sports school has brought up participants of Winter Olympics in cross-country skiing and biathlon (R. Raimo, G. Upenieks, R. Zīmelis). In more recent history we can be proud of World Cup 2006 and 2013 competitions in ski orienteering sport and Scandinavian Cup in cross-country skiing that is taking place in “Smeceres Sils” Winter Sports Centre 2011-2014.

NATURE

KALSNAVA ARBORETUM Slodas, Jaunkalsnava, Kalsnavas pagasts, Madonas novads [GPS: 56.68460; 25.94803] + 371 27841099, 29233063. One of the largest and most beautiful Latvian collections of ornamental trees and shrubs, covering 140 hectares of growing diversity of around 2500 species. It is run by the Latvian national foresting enterprise Latvijas valsts meži. There you can visit the Information Centre and take part in guided tours, visit the sight tower (25 m high), walking trails, the peony garden (about 160 variety), the thuja maze, the cone dryer, consult a dendrologist, sale of seedlings in the nearby nursery.

KALA LAKE (407 ha) its islands, inlets and the hilly shore make it one of the most beautiful Latvian lakes. The lake and its shore is a popular angling and recreation place. Its managers, the company (Board of Kala Lake), work regulary at the resource recovery so anglers have a good chance to catch zanders, pikes and other fishes.Boats, angler’s licences, (available also at www.epakalpojumi.lv ), Pedalos, recreation places etc.

THE SHORE OF LAKE LUBĀNS. The largest Latvian lake (80.7 km2) is surrounded by Lubāns wetland (51,632 ha). The area of the lake is a unique landscape with reeds, the shore dam, scrubs and grassland, dams, canals and locks. The lake and the area is popular for bird watching, fishing and active recreation.BIRD-WATCHING. About 220 species of birds can be observed around the lake, including some globally threatened ones; the area has been marked as one of the best nesting sites of 29 European specially protected bird species. Bird watching is possible from the six observation towers, a telescope and binoculars are available at the tourist information centre.

KRUSTKALNI (2978 ha) a significant nature reserve, one among four such nature reserves in Latvia. Its habitat consists of coniferous forests and grasslands on Madona Trepe wall and hilly slopes of Prauliena, lime-rich springs at their foot which build small lakes and pools. The reserve is protected by the state with the strictest protection regime. Guided tours are possible by booking (+ 371 26473408*). Meeting places for tour (optional): Ļaudona, Mētriena. TEIČI RESERVE (19,779 ha) is the largest nature reserve in Latvia. Teiči Marsh is one of the largest undamaged bogs in the Baltics. The rare species of swamp birds, their feeding and resting places, as well as the preserved wetlands plants and invertebrates make. Guided tours are possible by booking. VESTIENA PROTECTED LANDSCAPES AREA(27 117 ha) include the central part of Vidzeme Highlands with the highest point of Latvia – Gaizinkalns - as well as other hills over 270 m above sea level. Hilly landscape with a large biological diversity of meadows, natural forests and scenically lakes. Beautiful landscapes along Lake Kala and along the 7 km stretch from Vestiena to Gaizinkalns. The landscape area is marked green on the tourism map.

“PAKALNIEŠI” FOREST INFORMATION CENTRE

The program of the excursion includes a nearly 1 km long interactive nature trail „Houses of Animals”, that tells about the life of different birds, animals and insects. In the Suitcases of Forest you can get to know about Latvian trees and mushrooms. At the end of the excursion it is possible to dress up as a forest personage.

EXCURSION PROGRAM MYSTERY OF LAKE KALA[GPS: 56.8649; 25.8430] +371 29404820*. Meeting place at „Kālezers”, Vestienas pagasts, Madonas novads. The program includes the visiting of three tourism households around the lake: Kālezers recreation place, Bērzi, wehre you can taste non-traditional jams, tea and infusions, Ielāpi – making of parfumed soap. There are also available lunches. You can go there by car or cross the lake by pedalo. 8 pedalos available, the map and guide services.

The offer includes: visiting the workshop, participation in making pots of clay, visiting the exhibition of ancient houshold and handicraft items, visiting a 20th century blacksmith’s shop. GAIZINKALNS [GPS: 56.8714; 25.9639] is the highest point of Latvia. Its altitude is 311.6 m above sea level, the relative height of the hill - 61.6 m; it extends about 1 km long and 650 m wide. Visitors can walk the 2 km long nature trail, that first leads to the top of the hill, where you can see beautiful panoramic landscapes, but the way back goes along the scenic road of the foothills. The point is situated in the area of Gaiziņkalns Nature Park (2026 ha).

“PIEKUNI” SAUNA RITUAL. Dravēni, Vestienas pagasts, Madonas novads[GPS: 56.8664; 25.9435] + 371 29416180*, www.piekuni.lv The ritual lasts for 2-4 hours. During the evening it can be enjoyed by 1-2 persons. The sauna ritual includes: drinking tea, feet-bathing, putting a honey mask on the body, steaming with twigs of different plants, lying on sweating shelves covered with flowers, leaves or hay, after that follows cooling-off in the pond. The offer includes also accomodation and services of environmental guide.
