R-427A(1): ASHRAE(2) number for Arkema’s Forane® FX 100 Following the adoption of the European regulation on HCFCs(3) (n° 2037/2000/EC) dated June 29 2000, the use of virgin HCFCs(3), already banned in a large number of new installations since January 2001 in Europe, will also be banned for the maintenance of existing installations from 2010. Developed to replace R-22 in existing refrigeration and air-conditioning installations, and already chosen by a large number of users throughout Europe as the solution for their retrofits, Forane® FX 100 should shortly be officially granted an ASHRAE number: R-427A(1). A dossier for the registration of Forane® FX 100 under standard ASHRAE(2) 34 was filed and examined, unchallenged, in June 2006. The R-427A(1) designation and A1(1) classification (non-toxic, non-flammable) put forward following the discussions are currently undergoing public review and approval by ASHRAE(2), as required by the procedure. Formal approval is expected in the coming weeks. Forane® FX 100, a 100% HFC blend, allows the easy retrofit of existing R-22 equipment, requiring just one drainage of the system’s original oil followed by its direct replacement with a POE (PolyOilEster) lubricant. Optimum performance similar to that of R-22 can be achieved without the need for a long rinse of the circuit thanks to a high tolerance to the residual mineral or alkylbenzene oil. Combining environmental protection, performance and simplicity is now possible with R-427A(1). (1) Pending ASHRAE public review and approval. Arkema’s Forane® 134a UV Glow for swift leak detection in mobile air-conditioning systems

Because leak detection in mobile air-conditioning equipment can be a difficult and time-consuming process due to the complexity of the systems, Arkema offers an improved version of R-134a: Forane® 134a UV Glow. Featuring an added UV(1) colorant, this refrigerant fluid is designed to enable leaks from HFC(2)-134a automotive air-conditioning systems to be detected quickly and efficiently. This refrigerant combines the benefits of standard HFC(2)-134a and an effective colorant. The aging of materials, mechanical vibrations, and perforation of the condenser through impact or corrosion are all potential sources of leaks from automotive air-conditioning equipment. In this application (air-conditioning for cars, buses, truck cabs, farm vehicles), the detection of leaks in the engine compartment is particularly difficult. With the colorant contained in Forane® 134a UV Glow, leaks can be detected and located without delay by simply shining a UV(1) lamp over the equipment. The unique and patented formulation of Forane® 134a UV Glow offers a long-lasting colorant effect even if Recover/Recycle/Recharge machines are regularly used for the maintenance of the systems. Based on latest-generation colorants, this formulation produces a powerful UV(1) glow: only a few ppm(3) of dye in the leaking refrigerant/oil mixture is necessary to locate the leak. The detection of leaks is therefore possible over a long period of time despite the different maintenance intervention. Forane® 134a UV Glow complies with the SAE(4 J 2297 standard, is stable over time and compatible with every component of the air-conditioning circuit, in particular the compressor’s lubricating oil. With a low UV(1) additive concentration, Forane® 134a UV Glow offers the same performance and thermodynamic properties as standard R-134a. This product also fulfills the essential safety criteria (non-toxic, non-flammable) defined by the ASHRAE(5) 34 and EN(6) 378 international standards. It can be used without any additional precautions.

Page 8: TURKCHEM 2006 - Arkema · TURKCHEM 2006 November 2 – 5 2006 ... Arkema announces $ 45 M investment for a Fluorochemicals plant at its ... in particular the compressor’s lubricating

By helping control refrigerant fluid leaks, Forane® 134a UV Glow makes a positive contribution to the reduction of refrigerant gas emissions to the atmosphere. Moreover better maintenance results in more energy-efficient equipment, and, indirectly, in lower polluting combustion gas emissions.

Arkema’s Forane® Blowing Agents: a range of comprehensive and specific solutions for each application

A major player in blowing agents for insulating foam (construction, refrigeration) for many years, ARKEMA offers a number of specific solutions for the various markets. • Forane® 141b is an HCFC(1) whose renowned performance has benefited manufacturers of rigid polyurethane foam for

over ten years. This is currently the most cost-effective blowing agent, and its use, albeit restricted by the Montreal Protocol, is still authorized in many countries, as follows: - in the European Union until 2009 for the modification of polyols exported outside, - in the rest of the world until 2040, except North America and Japan (where HCFC-141b was banned in January

2003 and January 2004 respectively). • Forane® 142b and Forane® 142b/22 are HCFC gases which fulfill the requirements of the non-EC European, North

American and Japanese markets. They feature in particular good solubility in raw materials and good properties at low temperature.

• Forane® 134a is a zero ODP(2) HFC(3) non-flammable gas which is an excellent long-term substitute to HCFC-141b in

applications where a gaseous blowing agent can be used. Launched on the market by ARKEMA in 1999, Forane® 134a is widely available. It is an effective substitute to 142b in XPS and other thermoplastic foams.

• Forane® HFC 365mfc, pure or blended with Forane® HFC 227ea (7 or 13 % by weight) is the perfect liquid

alternative to HCFC 141b in Europe, Asia and Japan. HFC 365mfc is a zero ODP liquid which is non-flammable when used in combination with HFC 227ea. It is today very well accepted in Europe in the PU business.

ARKEMA is the world’s leading producer of fluorinated blowing agents, with production facilities in Europe (Pierre-Bénite, France) and the United States (Calvert City, Kentucky).

ARKEMA is committed to being the global leader in blowing agents for the foam industry, and, accordingly, is working to bring new products to this changing market.

CECA Specialty Surfactants.

TURKCHEM 2006 – November 2006 CECA presents its Specialty Surfactants range. Paris, October 4th 2006 This tradeshow, held from November 2nd to 5th 2006 in Istanbul, Turkey, is designed to promote exchanges between Chemical sector players. The CECA Specialty Surfactants team will present its extensive Surfactant range at this 2006 edition: FOR THE PLASTICS INDUSTRY: CECA ranks as leader in ethoxylated amines for the plastics industry. The NOROPLAST® additives range is renowned for its durable antistatic and antidust properties, and has been granted FDA approval. FOR THE FERTILISER INDUSTRY: CECA produces and markets fertiliser coating agents. All fertilisers (NPK, ammonium nitrate, DAP, urea, etc.) and some of their raw materials tend to cake to a greater or lesser degree during extended bulk storage on the production site, during long-distance transport, and mainly when moisture levels show significant variations. CECA also offers antidust agents that help minimise the formation of fines. Anticaking agents marketed under the tradename FLUIDIRAM® offer a solution to professionals in this sector. FOR MINERAL FILLERS: Clays are mineral fillers which occur naturally as hydrophilic flakes. In order to make them compatible with organic media like paints, polymers, inks, greases, oil-based drilling muds, etc., it is highly advisable to react them with quaternary ammonium salts, or simply with alkyl-amines in acid medium. The clays then become organophilic, and so either become excellent rheological additives in liquid medium, or enable excellent dispersion in polymers. In this application, CECA offers under the tradenames NORAM® and NORAMIUM® one of the most comprehensive cationic surfactants ranges on the market.
