Turkey, Malaysia Sign Free Trade Deal

Turkey and Malaysia signed a bilateral

Free Trade Agreement (FTA) on April 17,

2014 in Ankara, Turkey. Turkey was

represented by Minister of Economy Nihat

ZEYBEKCI while Malaysia was

represented by International Trade and

Industry Datuk Seri Mustapa MOHAMED.

The signing of the FTA was witnessed by

Prime Minister Recep Tayyip ERDOGAN

and his Malaysian counterpart Datuk Seri

Najib Tun RAZAK. Mainly, the Turkey-

Malaysia FTA provides preferential market access for Turkish goods entering the

Malaysian market and vice-versa. It is agreed that the FTA will first focus on goods, and

subsequently cover investment and services. ZEYBEKCI said that as the FTA is realized

over a period of eight years, more products would benefit from reduced or eliminated

duties. Turkish exports to Malaysia that will benefit from immediate duty-free access include agricultural produce, fisheries, food products and mineral products.

increased about 10.9% annually and reached at US$269.7

Export Sectors Reports: Food Processing Machinery

A brief report about food processing machinery production

and trade in Turkey has been recently updated by Ministry

of Economy. According to the report, Turkey is the largest

producer and exporter of agricultural products in the Near

East and North Africa. Exports of agricultural commodities

and food products were valued at US$21,6 billion in 2013

and accounted about 14.2% of Turkey’s total export

earnings. This strong agricultural potential and Turkey’s

food industry, changing lifestyles and tastes due to

increased industrialization and urbanization, the increase in

family income, and the decrease in available time for

preparing meals have all resulted in a strong food

processing sector. Accordingly, a large food processing

sector has accelerated the development of the food

processing machinery and equipment industry in Turkey. For the full report, please click here.
