• Turn in Homework to the basket.

• Please pick up a world map• Take out your map pencils.

You will need nine different colors.

Objective• Explain the influence of

climate on the distribution of biomes in different regions.

Page 3: Turn in Homework to the basket. Please pick up a world map

Biome: a major regional group of plants and animals adapted

to the environment (ecosystems).

Page 4: Turn in Homework to the basket. Please pick up a world map

Two Types of Biomes:

Terrestrial (land)

Aquatic (water)

Page 5: Turn in Homework to the basket. Please pick up a world map

#1 Tundra: an area where the tree growth is hindered by low

temperatures and short growing seasons. Northern

most landmass (Alaska, Canada and Russia)

Page 6: Turn in Homework to the basket. Please pick up a world map

Tundra

Page 7: Turn in Homework to the basket. Please pick up a world map

You will find permafrost or permanently frozen soil in

tundra areas.

Page 8: Turn in Homework to the basket. Please pick up a world map

Areas of tundra have high winds, little rain, and

temperatures that dip into –70 degrees.

Page 9: Turn in Homework to the basket. Please pick up a world map

Tundra tends to be rich in natural resources like oil and

uranium, and low in animal and plant diversity.

Page 10: Turn in Homework to the basket. Please pick up a world map

#2 Taiga: cold, northern coniferous forest (boreal forest)

Page 11: Turn in Homework to the basket. Please pick up a world map

Taiga

Page 12: Turn in Homework to the basket. Please pick up a world map

Taiga is the largest biome and a major supplier of oxygen.

Page 13: Turn in Homework to the basket. Please pick up a world map

Temperatures barely climb above freezing in taiga and there is little sun because it

barely climbs above the horizon.

Page 14: Turn in Homework to the basket. Please pick up a world map

#3 Grassland: open flat areas of grass

Page 15: Turn in Homework to the basket. Please pick up a world map

Grasslands

Page 16: Turn in Homework to the basket. Please pick up a world map

Areas of grassland have little precipitation and are plains or

low rolling hills (cover the central region of most

continents).

Page 17: Turn in Homework to the basket. Please pick up a world map

#4 Deciduous Forest: areas in which the trees lose their

leaves each year.

Page 18: Turn in Homework to the basket. Please pick up a world map

Deciduous Forest

Page 19: Turn in Homework to the basket. Please pick up a world map

#5 Chaparral: dense vegetation consisting of stunted trees or bushes

Page 20: Turn in Homework to the basket. Please pick up a world map

Chaparral is hot and dry with common wildfires.

Page 21: Turn in Homework to the basket. Please pick up a world map

#6 Desert: a dry, often sandy region of little rainfall and

sparse vegetation

Page 22: Turn in Homework to the basket. Please pick up a world map

Desert

Page 23: Turn in Homework to the basket. Please pick up a world map

Areas of desert receive less than 10 inches of rain

a year.

Page 24: Turn in Homework to the basket. Please pick up a world map

#7 Savanna: tropical grasslands with scattered trees

or shrubs

Page 25: Turn in Homework to the basket. Please pick up a world map

Savanna

Page 26: Turn in Homework to the basket. Please pick up a world map

Areas of savanna have a long dry season and a very wet

season.

Page 27: Turn in Homework to the basket. Please pick up a world map

#8 Rainforest: a forest of tall trees, year round warmth and

constant rain

Page 28: Turn in Homework to the basket. Please pick up a world map

Rainforest

Page 29: Turn in Homework to the basket. Please pick up a world map

Rainforest cover 6% of the earth but generate 40% of our

oxygen.

Page 30: Turn in Homework to the basket. Please pick up a world map

#9 Alpine: mountainous regions which are cold

Page 31: Turn in Homework to the basket. Please pick up a world map

Alpine

Page 32: Turn in Homework to the basket. Please pick up a world map

Areas of Alpine are cold because of elevation (above

the tree line).

Page 33: Turn in Homework to the basket. Please pick up a world map

#10 Coniferous Forest: forest which keep their leaves all year

long.

Page 34: Turn in Homework to the basket. Please pick up a world map

#11 Coral Reef: a ridge

or mound made by

colonies of tiny coral animals;

found only in shallow

regions of tropical oceans

Ac-tivity, Ac-tivity• On your blank world map, color

the 9 different biomes.• In the bottom left corner,

create a(n) index/table of the biome’s color.

• Then, explain in complete sentences for each biome:– What is the CLIMATE in this biome and

how does it affect it? P. 70– What would you wear and what would

you do in your leisure time?

Pre AP Enrichment

• Create a journal entry of someone living in a specific biome. Describe the climate, how you dress, what job you would have, and how you would live. Do NOT include the name of the biome. Trade with a partner and let them guess the biome.
