• Growing to serve all girls in need

• Being the foremost expert ingender-specific services

Our Core Values• We treat every girl as is she were our own daughter

• We keep our promises to our girls, each other and the community

• We do whatever it takes to fulfill our mission and vision

Our MissionFlorence Crittentongives every girl whoselife we touch safety, hope, and opportunity.

For most of us, the holidays are a very specialtime of year filled with love, laughter, and best ofall, family. For some though, the holidays are a

difficult and trying time, as is the case with many ofthe girls living with us, especially since most of themlack family support. That is why we feel it is so importantthat we do all we can to provide the sense of familythat each of them both needs and deserves, but wecan’t do it without you.

Everything we achieve at Florence Crittentonis due to the generosity of the community.Volunteers, donors, friends and civic leaders all playa role in our ability to provide safety, hope and oppor-tunity to Arizona’s at-risk girls. We have truly beenblessed over the years to have so many people from thecommunity who care deeply about our mission. I amvery grateful for your past generosity and ask that youcontinue giving during this holiday season.

There are many ways that you can make a differencein our kids’ lives. We host a Holiday Drive that runsthrough the entire month of December. Gifts collectedduring the drive are handed out to girls living in ourResidential Group Home, the Scottsdale Girls RanchHome and our Transitional Living Homes. The drive is

designed to bring joy and gifts to our girls, many of whomhave literally been forgotten by their own families. Forthem, the thought that someone would care enough togive a gift or write a note to them reminds them thatthey are remembered and they do matter.

We are also in need of volunteers during theholidays to do things such as sort and wrap the giftsthat come in during the Holiday Drive, decorate thecampus and cottages, or host crafting projects with thegirls. No matter what capacity you choose togive, you will be making a difference.

During this time of year, I truly believe that in givingwe receive. To you and yours,we wish happy holidayssurrounded by loved ones and a new year filled withpeace and prosperity.

Wishing you a safe and joyous holiday season,

FROM THE EXECUTIVE

Growing up really is hard to do. But, imagine being ateenager trying to grow up without parents to providethe kind of care and support that every kid needs. That

is the situation that the more than 10,000 youth in ourstate’s foster care system are facing. When these youngpeople reach the age of 18, they will “age out” of the foster caresystem, leaving them with the responsibility of figuring out howto make it on their own. Unfortunately, that is the very timewhen they need support the most.

Youth in foster care often do not get the help they need withhigh school completion, employment, accessing health care, continued educational opportunities and housing. Studies of youthwho have left foster care have shown they are more likely thanthose in the general population to not finish high school, beunemployed and be dependent on public assistance. It is notuncommon for many to find themselves homeless, in prison orparents at an early age.

Florence Crittenton’s Independent Living (IL) Programis designed to help these vulnerable youth meet the challengesthat adulthood will bring. Through the use of a comprehensivecurriculum and numerous other community resources, clients areequipped with the necessary tools to make a successful transitioninto adulthood and out of the foster care system. Young peoplein this program learn skills such as how to search for employ-ment, completing a professional resume, budgeting, how tobalance a checkbook and what educational options are availablefor them after high school. The program also provides supportand advocacy for these clients as they maneuver through a com-plicated foster care system.

Bernice is a 17-year-old girl who was referred to the ILProgram when she was placed in a shelter after being AWOLfrom the foster care system for a lengthy period of time.Bernice had a little boy during the time she was away from thesystem who was taken into the custody of CPS when she wasfound. Once in the program, Bernice began working with aParent Aid and attended drug education classes to help hermove towards reunification with her son.

With the help of her case manager, Bernice re-enrolled inhigh school, obtained a job, opened a savings account and waseventually reunited with her son. She is an extremely attentive, loving and patient mother. She has come to terms with herpast mistakes and has made a commitment to herself and to herson that she will work hard to provide a healthy environmentfor them both.

If you would like to learn more about the Independent LivingProgram, please call 602-288-4584.

Lisa & Randy JohnsonThe Johnson family has a true passion to

help girls and boys succeed in school and in life. They have demonstrated this commitment tostrengthening our community’s young peoplethrough their generous support of FlorenceCrittenton. For more than 4 years, Florence

Crittenton’s girls havebeen among the benefi-ciaries of the annualRandy Johnson “PutYour Best FootForward” Shoe

Drive, which is hosted in partnership with SleepAmerica. The girls are always excited when theyeach receive a beautiful new pair of sneakers at thecelebration, but the highlight of the afternoon isthe opportunity they have to spend time social-izing with Lisa and her daughter Samantha.

Randy teamed up with Crittenton YouthAcademy’s Science teacher to give students avery special surprise demonstration about thephysics of baseball. Following the demon-stration and a very interesting Q & A session,Randy spent time with many of the studentspersonally showing them how to pitch.

In addition to their personal involvement, theJohnsons have also made a significant financialcontribution to our agency. Last year, FlorenceCrittenton was presented with a $100,000 grantthrough The Randy Johnson Foundation –A National Heritage Foundation. The granthas funded a variety of activities for the girls, outdoor furniture for our four cottage patios, aswell as two major renovation projects at ourTransitional Living apartment complex and theScottsdale Girls Ranch home.

We are deeply grateful to the Johnson Family fortheir love and support of Florence Crittenton’s girls.
