HEALING THE WHOLE BODY VERSUS DISEASETwo major paradigms have been battling in the West for thelast hundred years or more. The pharmaceutical and medicalindustries, attempting to maintain economic control of whathas turned into one of the largest and most powerfuleconomic forces on the planet, try to turn everything into abattle of science against a specific disease. Their modelimplies that highly trained soldiers in that war applyhigh-tech weapons to destroy the disease.

The traditional medical models such as Native American,Chinese, Mayan, Ayurvedic, African Shamanic and WesternEuropean herbalism have a dramatically different viewpoint. These models, while in some cases having differing viewpointson the cause and cure of diseases, tend, nevertheless, to viewthe person as a holistic complex individual and as part of awider community, culture and natural environment. Thesemodels tend to relate the powers of nature to the imbalanceexperienced by the individual to find a way to treat the wholeperson rather than just the symptoms. This is known asholistic medicine.

Today as science confronts the vast miscalculations it hasmade in the unintended consequences of their extreme andimbalanced application of isolated “cures” against isolated“diseases” (things like drug-resistant antibiotics, massive longterm “side effects” to drug therapies and the resurgence ofdiseases that were thought to be virtually “exterminated,” aswell as the development of “new” diseases due to imbalancescreated in the life and environment, etc.) and the fact thatpatients who utilize holistic techniques such as stressreduction, energy medicines (such as biomagnetics andacupuncture), yoga, herbalism, lifestyle and diet adjustmentstend to have better and healthier lives and treatmentoutcomes, there is a greater recognition of the fact thattreating the whole person is in fact a more effective paradigmfor health and well-being.

THE LAW OF UNINTENDEDCONSEQUENCE

People are beginning to recognizethat the human biological system is farmore complex than human intellectcan comprehend. While the focusedconcentration of science can lead toapparently “miraculous” results, theseextremely one-sided, highly potentcures always have significant and long term“unintended consequences.” Some of theseconsequences create weaknesses in thehuman system that can have a devastatingimpact for generations into the future.

NATURAL HARMONY

The basic principle of the traditional herbal systems throughoutthe world is that the human being is part of a complete biologicaland ecological system that includes all the other living entities onthe planet, which is self-regulating and self-correcting, and whichcontains the appropriate balancing forces somewhere in theenvironment for every disharmony or imbalance that arises.

The role of the traditional healer, then, is to identify the imbalanceand apply the correct natural balancing force to allow the humansystem to respond and correct its own problem from within.

The wholistic approach of the traditional healing modalities looksfor “signatures” in plants to identify on what we may call an“intuitive” level, the appropriate herb for a specific imbalance thatis being treated. It is not so much that the herb is directly attackingthe invading organism, but that the herb helps the body activate itsown natural response. That is, by the way, why many herbs arefound to be extremely effective in real life, or even in clinicalstudies, but are hard to pin down in some kind of laboratoryexperiment seeking for an active component of some kind.

INTERVENTIONAT THE LEAST INVASIVE LEVEL

The natural answer to the dilemma caused by the “law ofunintended consequence” is to allow the natural resistance ofthe human body to function without undue intervention. Theprinciple here is to avoid, wherever possible, extreme, high-potency,standardized, single-ingredient products, which, to the extent oftheir very potency, are sure to create consequences and side effects.Rather, to use the herbs in their most “complete” and balanced formis actually a more healthy procedure both long term and short term. While one may find that this process works less “miraculously,” onemay also find that over the long term, we live healthier lives with astrong natural resistance and maintain a more effective wellnessand balance.

Not all herbal products are the same. Turtle Island puts a lot of effort into ensuringthat our products are among the best available anywhere on the planet. We startfrom our insistence on the use of organic and ethically wildharvested herbs. Weproduce in small, carefully monitored batches and utilize quality controlprocedures from the minute the herbs reach our facility to the final step of bottlingour extracts. We utilize formulas that have withstood the test of time and havecreated unique products that meet the needs of modern day problems. We treat

herbs with respect and honor nature in our use of herbs. The result is that we canprovide our customers with real value every time they choose one of our products.

We believe in the principle of “herbal standards not standardized herbs.”

QUALITY CONTROL OF HERBSWe receive most of our plants and roots

whole so they can be carefully identified accordingto taste, smell and appearance by our skilled staff oftrained herbalists. We work closely with a numberof wildcrafters and harvesters who have pledgedthemselves to the principles of ethical wildharvesting. We also work closely with some of the major organicherb growers in this country to ensure that we arealways obtaining high quality, organically grown andcertified herbs for our production.

EXTRACTION TECHNIQUESAs the safest and most effective form of herbal extracts, tinctures come closest to representing the original plantwithout overpotentizing the solvent or standardizingconstituents that have more drug-like characteristicsand possible side effects.

Percolation is our preferred method of processingdried herbs like echinacea, oshá and goldenseal in smallquantities at a ratio of 1:5 herb to solvent. This processallows fresh, clear solvent to flow through the herbat all times. The gravity and pressure of percolationdraws out constituents and creates heat for full andvigorous extraction. The result is a stronger extract thatretains the plant’s most vital properties.

Maceration at a 1:2 herb to solvent ratio is used forfresh plant extracts, and we keep them in solventfor at least two weeks for thorough extraction ofplant substance.

DRY PLANT EXTRACTSSince fresh plants containing saponins may irritate thestomach, some plant roots need to be processed dry, which causes the saponins to evoke a more harmonioussystemic influence and less cathartic or laxative activitybrought about by some fresh plants.

FRESH PLANT EXTRACTSFresh plant extracts allow us to capture the essence of theplant that can be lost in its dry form. That way, vitalelements, such as hypericin, a flavonoid in St. John’s wort,or chlorophyll in nettles, remain more intact. Otherelements may dissipate or chemically change to lessdesirable properties when dried.

ALCOHOL EXTRACTSAlcohol is used for much herbal extraction because of itseffectiveness in extracting certain active constituents suchas alkaloids, some glycosides, resins and oils that are notreleased in water, vinegar or glycerin. For example, hydrastine, a valuable major constituent of goldenseal, isnot water or glycerin soluble and thus needs alcohol as anextraction solvent.

We use only U.S. pharmaceutical grade pure grain alcohol, free of any chemicals or agricultural residues, and distilledwater. The ratio of alcohol to water varies according tolimited water soluble properties (USPS). We are careful touse the correct extraction technique to optimize the valueof each herb with which we are working.

We understand that many people are concerned about theuse of alcohol in herbal extracts. It is necessary to bothunderstand the requirement of alcohol use to achievecomplete extraction and to realize that the amountactually ingested is minimal. For example, someonetaking 30 drops of our Goldenseal Extract would beimbibing considerably less alcohol value than a ripe banana!

Alcohol also has the effect of quickly distributing theherbal extract into the bloodstream, allowing for thefastest possible uptake of the herbal constituents in thebody. If you desire to avoid alcohol you can disperse most,if not all, of the remaining alcohol by putting the extractinto a cup of hot water and ingesting it as an herbal tea.You may also consider using one of our glycerites.

GLYCERITESThe same organically grown and ethically wildharvestedplant material is used in our alcohol-free glycerites, mostof which are created from fresh plants. The advantage ofglycerites is obviously the ability to deliver strong herbalaction without the use of alcohol. This is particularlyuseful for working with children and anyone else whodesires to avoid all traces of alcohol. While some of ourglycerites are direct extractions, it is interesting to notethat our Milk Thistle Glycerite is a result of a doubleprocess of extraction in which it is first tinctured inalcohol because the silymarin is only alcohol soluble andwill not release properties to glycerin or water. Thenwe add the extract to low heated glycerin for severalhours. This dissipates all the alcohol and leaves only thepure extracted plant juice to form a concentratedglycerite solution.

COMBINATION FORMULASSome of our combinations are traditional formulas rightout of the National Formulary, tried and true, effectiveand synergistic. Many of them were formulated byFeather Jones based on her experience, training and yearsof practice. Vegetable glycerine is added to certaincombinations to ensure that valuable constituentsremain in solution. Certain herbs do not mix welltogether such as those high in tannins with those highin alkaloids. These combinations might result inconstituents precipitating out of solution without atleast 10% glycerin added to hold them together.

ISSUES RELATING TO HERBSAND HUMAN WELLNESS
