Last weekend it was the Florida International Panthers...which Bama dispatched easily. This week it’s North Texas...and again, this promises to be an exercise rather than a full test of Bama’s prowess. Sorry Green Eagles. We’ll likely have to wait ‘til next weeks game against Arkansas, which will bring the Tide Pride back to Tuscaloosa for encore home game number three, to see sparks fly against the SEC Razorbacks, for Bama to be tested. There’s something to be said for playing some teams that don’t match up to your highly ranked team. The odds of staying healthy, and the team note being able to stay “pumped up”, week after week, for an all out battle would likely result in a loss. In these times a loss is a disaster for rankings and can take a team, that might truly be the best in the nation, out of the hunt for a national championship title. The poise Alabama showed, the strength and speed of our defense, and the offense at the end of each of the first two games, the depth of talent on our offense, against Virginia Tech and Florida International, set me to wondering if this team might even be a little stronger than last years team. There seemed to be fewer weaknesses than we were seeing and much more depth. I don’t mean to be overly optimist, but I have my feet on the ground here...but, I am very confident that this Alabama team will be in the hunt for the SEC Championship game in Atlanta again...and I expect that would be against Florida again. The teams that really concern me between here and there, and that could beat the Tide on a given day, is Ole Miss and LSU….and of course there’s always the wild card games against Auburn and Tennessee, but the series have, of late, begun to look like just another game of talent versus all the emotions boiling in years gone by. EDITOR’S COMMENTS...

Years ago I lived in Pickens county. There was a diner over there, can’t remember the name, but it was run by Ellen Criswell Jackson. She was a really fun gal to be around (God rest her soul). And one day I came in to eat at Ellen’s diner and afterwards she asked me if I wanted a piece of chocolate pie. Sounded good to me, so I ordered it. Ellen sat down at a table near me to read an article in the Birmingham News. She started laughing out loud. She rushed over to show me the article which said that people ate chocolate as a substitute for sex. Well, I had that piece of chocolate pie sitting in front me, and probably a red face. That Ellen, she was a hoot. I was a car dealer over there in Pickens County in those years...had a Ford and Chrysler Dodge agency. The day after I ate that pie at Ellen’s diner an old man, who was 87 years old, came in with his new bride...she was 83. Now they were a sight to behold...and obviously in love. The old man had brought his new bride in to buy her a new car. They picked one out, just like she wanted, we agreed on the deal, and they sat to wait on the paperwork to be completed. The old man and I struck up a conversation about the old car he had driven to the dealership to buy his new bride her auto. And I said, “You know you should just go ahead and get yourself a new car too! At 87 years of age, you might not be driving that much longer, so when you drive wouldn’t it be great if you and she both had nice new vehicles to enjoy in these latter years?” He smiled. We strolled out to the lot and, next thing you know he’d picked out a new car for himself. Now we had two vehicles to clean up, fill with gas, do the paper work on and...it was going to take a while. So, I told him that if he would like to use my new car and drive up to the local diner that I would treat him and his wife to lunch while we finished getting the cars ready. Off they went to Ellen’s diner. After getting the paperwork going and there being nothing left for me to do until the couple returned, I figured I might as well go to lunch myself. So, I took one of the cars off the lot and drove up to Ellen’s diner. When I walked in there was Ellen, grinning from ear to ear. She motioned me over, held her hand in front of her face so no one could hear what she was telling me. “Look, that old couple you sent up here to eat...both of them are eating chocolate pie!” I looked over and, sure enough, there they sat, happy as you’ve ever seen a loving newlywed couple, both with a nice large slice of chocolate pie sitting in front of them. I’m not sure what the moral of this story is, or if it even has one. But,I’ll never forget the laughs that Ellen and I shared at that old diner and I think of her often. And I think of that old couple from time to time...and I order a piece of chocolate pie. Mike Woodard, PublisherTuscaloosa Sun E-mail Mike:

Gardening With - Herbs & Vegetables. A lot of what you’re needing to do with your veg-etable garden is to plant ground cover for the winter. These are the type plants that you will “turn under” in the spring which will improve the soils. Legumes: crimson clover, winter pea, or vetch should be planted about a month before the first killing frost. They are really inexpensive and serve as fertilizer when turned under in the spring. You can also plant grasses, buckwheat, rye or barley earlier in the sum-mer to turn under the next spring, but they don’t have the same amount of nitrogen to help the soil as the legumes above. Many of your spring plants can still be grown up til frost, but you will be responsible for watering as the skies don’t do near as good a job as they do in the spring. Once average daily temperatures drop below 65 degrees start nipping the buds on new produce to divert nutrients to the ripening product on the vine. Those new buds probably won’t have time to mature before the killing frost. Compose your dead plants as leaving them around provides cover for pests.

Children’s Corner I bet there are times you’re frustrated about the hit-or-miss quality of your kids’ home study. Good study habits are essential for progress, and without them children can very quickly fall behind - and if they fall too far behind, they may be tempted to drop out. How would you like to help your kids in this vitally important area - so that you can relax and let them get on with it? Step 1 Help your kids see ‘What’s in it for me?’ This is the key to motivation. Our biggest impulse to do anything is the promise of some reward or benefit for our-selves. Let’s face this fact of life and use it appropriately. For your kids the benefits of good study habits will be success in their education and life prospects. But that won’t impress the average teenager! Certainly, make them aware of it, but why not set something more tangible, like some enticing and juicy goals? What do they want? A new computer? An increase in their allowance? If it can be something you were planning to give them anyway - but they don’t know that yet! - use it as leverage. If it’s something they’re saving for, you could promise to help out when they’ve shown you proof of their new study habits.Study is hard work, and that doesn’t come easily to the human spirit. We need all the help we can get! And don’t underestimate the importance of your praise and admiration for their improve-ment. For many kids that’s the best reward they can get. Step 2 Once they’re motivated, stress the importance of paying attention in school. They’ll find study sessions so much easier if they’ve done the necessary prepara-tions: they’ve listened in class, taken part in discussions, taken notes, concentrated on reading assignments and so on. In short, they come to their home study ses-sions prepared and ready to go. Step 3 Be aware that different people have different learning styles, so the same methods don’t work for everyone: some learn best by reading, others by listening, others by doing things. Make allowances for these differences and encourage your kids to experiment to find their preferred learning styles. If this is new to you, your school will be able to give you more information. Step 4 Similarly, people have different preferences for their learning environments. Scientific studies show that some kids assimilate knowledge better and faster while music is playing - yet for others this is a complete distraction. Some kids like to sit up straight at a desk - while others like to stretch out on the floor. Whatever their preferences, everyone needs fresh air to breathe and a comfortable - but not too comfortable! -temperature in the place of study. Step 5 Children with kinesthetic and visual learning styles may need such things as graphs, charts, diagrams, and images, rather than simple books, notepads and pens. Discuss this with them and be prepared to invest in appropriate equipment if that’s what it takes to get the best from their study. Step 6 The most important consideration is the provision of a place free from distractions. Don’t be afraid to lay down the law here! TV, ‘phone calls and the like are OUT during study time. Build this in as part of the contract or agreement you make regarding benefits or rewards. (Remember, however, that background music - not TV - can actually help some kids.) Step 7 Pay heed to the best times for study. Before meals isn’t usually good, as hunger pangs can get in the way of concentration and reduce energy levels. Straight after a big meal isn’t good either, as we tend to feel less energetic and more lethar-gic. A snack to stave off hunger pangs is good for concentration, as is drinking sufficient water to keep the body comfortably hydrated. Kids need to know more about how to get the most from their time in school, but by helping your children to apply these seven steps for good study hab-its, you’ll be making a huge investment in their futures.

Women’s Forum

(NU) - Success in businessand in life requires an open mind.In order to prosper, you have tobe willing to learn -- and thatmeans becoming a student.

“Formal education will makeyou a living, self-education willmake you a fortune,” says John-na Parr, author of “When theDream is Big Enough.”

An entrepreneur who runs asuccessful network marketingbusiness with her husband, Matt,Parr never thought of herself asa good learner. But when she wastrying to start her business, sherealized that she needed to absorblessons from those who were al-ready successful.

“I listened and took in all ofthe knowledge of the leaders ofthe business,” says Parr. “I tookthe notes, reviewed them and im-plemented what I had learned.”

Today, Parr is more teacherthan student --she helps other en-trepreneurs realize their ambi-tions. One of the first things shetells budding entrepreneurs? They have to make themselvesteachable.

Parr says that all business peo-ple experience different stages oflearning:

Stage 1: “I know nothing.”When people begin a new career, they tend to be enthusiastic learn-ers --they listen to educational au-dios and conference calls, readbooks and follow formulas set byindustry leaders. Their business-es begin to grow. But no one staysin this stage forever.

Stage 2: “I know every-thing.” Sooner or later, everyonehits this stage -- often destroyingtheir business in the process.

“Some people mistakenly believethat if they accomplish a goal, orhave some success, they nolonger have to learn or grow,”says Parr. But this stagnant mind-set leads to stagnant business --know-it-alls either fail or stop be-ing know-it-alls.

Stage 3: “I don’t knoweverything.” Entrepreneurs inthis third stage know that they canbring good ideas to the table, butthey also realize the importanceof others’ contributions. Theyform creative partnerships andnever stop trying to grow and im-prove as leaders. Because theyare good students, they also be-come good teachers. Their beliefin themselves and their goal al-lows them to agree to disagree onimportant issues.

Few people naturally possessthe skills to succeed in business.Success is a journey that requiresteachability and a desire to learn.Without these qualities, realizingthe dream may be impossible. For more information, visitwww.johnnaparr.com.

By Mike Woodard [email protected] With Bama so strong and the schedule so weak for

these past two weeks, it seems a good time to sum up what the season has shown thus far.

Bama, as we’ve seen, in a national contender again this year. But who else is stacking up in the hunt? Obviously

Florida with superman at quarterback. Our second game of the season, if you only count teams that have power, will come next week against Arkansas. Bama should beat the Razorbacks, but they’ll be more test than FI or North Texas….maybe more than VT. Bama should outlast Kentucky...but then there’s this big bump in the road which is Mississippi. This away game in Oxford will be against a team that is as big as Bama, has a great coach, and plays with intensity. I expect this to be the toughest team in the schedule as of the game date of Oct 10th. Then South Carolina...they’ll come to play, and the team might be a little loose for homecoming, but Bama will wear them down and out by the end of the game. Then Tennessee. One would think that Tennessee should be in a building year with a new coach, but this team has an amazing amount of talent and has size too. We’ll just have to watch how Tennessee progresses in the coming weeks to get a better feel for what Bama will be up against. Then Bama has an off week….rolling into the LSU game. LSU is tough...and they play Bama like their life depended on it. Think it has some-thing to do with our coach? LSU is the next super tough game after Ole Miss. Then we play Mississippi State in Starkville. Bama should take the Dogs this year without too much fanfare. Again, a new coach, but a troubled program. Regular season fi nale is Auburn, always. New coach, troubled of-fense….but huge talent and hype for this game. We’ll need to watch this team to see how they progress over the course of the season to really get a feel for what we’re up against. Auburn is a team in transition, probably for the better. Then (dreaming), the SEC Championship. Bama versus Florida in an epic repeat. But, this time Bama wins and goes to the National Championship game against……….Ok, your guess is as good as mine. OK wake up. NASCAR- NEW HAMPSHIRE THIS SUNDAY Congrats to Denny Hamlin on taking the Chevy Rock N Roll 400 in Richmond. And to Kyle & Kurt for both hitting the top fi ve. Jeff Gordon hit #3. Most of the other bigger players missed the top 10, like Stewart, Johnson, and….oh boy, Earnhardt at 21st. He can’t get his groove back it appears! Here comes the New Hampshire Sylvania 300...not so far, but lot’s of laps on this little 1 mile track oval. This Sunday 1 pm on ABC. Race on.

BAMA QUIZ: The winningest decade ever for Bama football was...?

World Watchwith Mike Woodard

[email protected] says we need health care reform. Why should there be health care reform and what should it look like? When you go to the post offi ce you are going to a government run delivery company. You can send things across the country or across town with Fed Ex, UPS, DHL, and other companies...but you can just buy a 42 cent stamp and the USPS will deliver it in the US mail. This is my opinion of how the government option for buying health insurance should work. Why do we need a government option? You get a chronic disease...then fall on hard times, lose your job, and in the process stop being able to pay for medical insurance….then you get a job again and want to resume buying insurance. You will NOT be able to buy insurance to cover you for what you need most, coverage for that chronic disease. The private insurance companies have determined you to be too expensive to cover anymore for that disease...you’re only option is to get medical care at the emergency department, fi le for bankruptcy, and kiss your net worth, whatever fi nancial strength you worked hard all your life to accumulate, good bye. Going back to the postage comparison. It would be like you lived in Gordo and UPS, Fed Ex, and DHL all decided it wasn’t profi table enough for them to deliver to Gordo...without the post offi ce, there would be no mail delivered to anyone in Gordo. It’s the same way for medical insurance….without this “public option” they’re calling it...there is no medical insurance for some folks. Period, tough luck buster! Now this is not to say that I favor giving away stamps or medical care to people. I pay my government 42 cents for every letter I mail and I expect others to have to pay for their stamps as well. And I pay for medical insurance, and I expect others to have to pay for it too. This is why this type of system should not cost our government much money. The economy ebbs and fl ows for government entities, health insurance or postal services, just like it does for us folks in the private sector. Plus, the big problem has been there hasn’t been enough competition in the medical industry to place any downward pressure on prices. To the contrary, prices have gone up dramatically, for years and years! And, the democrats should give in on tort reform. Too much medical care is done just to defend a possible lawsuit rather than to help patients. I don’t want to pay for useless health care just so the doctor is protected in a medical mal-practice suit! What’s in that for us? And yes, it bothers me that the government should have to do this. I’m conservative, and I hate government involvement in business...but when businesses operates at “maximum profi t”...and circumstances change to where nothing remains to rein-in those profi ts. When a sector of the economy goes hog wild with profi ts, while the rest is suffering….sometimes government is the only entity with enough power to level the playing fi eld. I’ve written this before. The medical community has brought this situation on itself by building castles on the backs of the peasantry. And we should have passed tort reform long before doctors were forced into doing so much defensive (read expensive) health care.
