Principals Message As I begin this weeks newsletter, I am still dwelling on the fact that nearly every single Year 9 family battled against the rain, wind and the challenges of parking to join us for our Year 9 Options Evening last Monday evening. Thank you very much indeed for yet again showing such wonderful support for my staff as we begin the important process of securing the best subject choices for your children. Over the years, parents have probably heard me say many times that the best educational outcomes for our children are achieved when families and school work closely together, mutually supporting one another to ensure the best for the children we teach and you love...not that we dont love them as well! We may not always agree on everything, but working together usually results in finding the right way forward. There have understandably been queries this year about some of the expectations in the options choices. Please remember that choosing subjects is a process that we will work through during the coming weeks and that, as always, the need for flexibility and an individualised approach will ensure all students receive a curriculum appropriate to their needs. We are blessed in being able to offer a wide range of subjects taught by specialist and dedicated teachers; we will strive to find the right pathways for everyone. Additional support is also being prepared for Year 11 families. In the same way that the options process should not create worry and concern, the run-up to the GCSE examinations for Year 11, whilst inevitably a challenging time, should not overly create anxiety. We are working hard in College to minimise studentsanxiety whilst at the same time maximising their potential. Making sure students appreciate how much they are capable of achieving and help- ing them to revise and study independently are two keys to their success. To that end, please look out for letters in- viting Year 11 parents to an additional ParentsEvening next Wednesday that staff have been keen to arrange for you. I am sure it will be a helpful evening. Life at Christ the King College is about far more than choosing subjects and preparing for exams, although I suspect that is how it sometimes feels! Once again, therefore, can I bring your attention to the array of achievements outside of College that are celebrated in the pages of this newsletter. On Wednesday evening, for example, I very proudly watched twelve of our students deliver wonderful speeches in front of audiences in the annual Rotary Club Youth Speaks competition. Their confidence, poise and delivery were a joy to watch. I only wish I could master the art of being in more than one place at the same time and attend every single event in which our young people are in- volved. It is of course that time of year when Global Rock is approaching fast, rehearsals for Into the Woods, our next stage production, are well underway, and music workshops this week have been a huge success. Once again, it has been a busy, successful and enjoyable week at Christ the King College. As we unbelievably move towards the half-way stage of the academic year, I hope you have a lovely week-end. This time next week, of course, we finish for the half term break, although I know that teachers are preparing revision ses- sions for students during that week. No rest for some! Year 11 Information Evening As we build towards the GCSE examinations this May and June, we would like to extend a warm wel- come to all parents and Year 11 students to come and talk to their child s teachers about the varied array of resources available to support them and strategies to have an impact on their learning across their subjects. Principal’s Message As I begin this week’s newsletter, I am still dwelling on the fact that nearly every single Year 9 family battled against the rain, wind and the challenges of parking to join us for our Year 9 Options Evening last Monday evening. Thank you very much indeed for yet again showing such wonderful support for my staff as we begin the important process of securing the best subject choices for your children.

Over the years, parents have probably heard me say many times that the best educational outcomes for our children are achieved when families and school work closely together, mutually supporting one another to ensure the best for the children we teach and you love...not that we don’t love them as well!

We are working hard in College to minimise students’ anxiety whilst at the same time maximising their potential. Making sure students appreciate how much they are capable of achieving and help-ing them to revise and study independently are two keys to their success. To that end, please look out for letters in-viting Year 11 parents to an additional Parents’ Evening next Wednesday that staff have been keen to arrange for you.

Family Photo Shoot

We are pleased to be able to offer another opportunity to families and friends for a photo shoot. This will

be arranged for Saturday, 11th March from 9.30 am to 12.30 pm.

You are able to book a private slot to meet with the photographer and have a sitting, during which time

10 or more photographs in various poses will be taken. The appointment is arranged so that it is private

and you have time to discuss with the photographer your requirements. Why not bring along the whole

family — grandparents, Mum and Dad, younger brothers and sisters!

We previously offered this opportuntiy in October last year and the families who attended were all thrilled

with their pictures.

The sitting is completely free and there is no obligations to purchase. You will receive copies of the

proofs and time to make your selection. We have arranged for the photographer to visit us at this time to

ensure that the photographs will be with you in good time before the Easter break, and so would make

wonderful presents.

Book your appointment with Glynis Hutchings,

Father, give us each a heart like that of Mary’s, willing to agree with your Word, your promises, and your intent for

our lives. With Mary there was no negotiating, no twenty four hours to think about it, no keeping her options open.

You simply spoke, and she unhesitatingly responded with a yes. You have an intent for each of us. That purpose

will have its challenges, its high points and low points, its joys and sorrows, but your plan is far and above the best

plan for our lives. May our soul be transformed into one that instantly obeys you, comes when you call, follows your

lead, and believes your word even when we cannot fully comprehend it, for your word is truth.

* Prayer taken from http://www.beliefnet.com/faiths/prayer

Theme: Obedience

2 John Verses 1 to 6 The elder, to the lady chosen by God and to her children, whom I love in the truth — and not I only, but also all who know the truth — because of the truth, which lives in us and will be with us forever: Grace, mercy and peace from God the Father and from Jesus Christ, the Father’s Son, will be with us in truth and love. It has given me great joy to find some of your children walking in the truth, just as the Father commanded us. And now, dear lady, I am not writ-ing you a new command but one we have had from the beginning. I ask that we love one another. And this is love: that we walk in obedience to his commands. As you have heard from the beginning, his command is that you walk in love.

Sixth Form Football Friendly vs. Ryde School On Wednesday, 8th February, the Christ the King College Sixth Form team played their first friendly for a number of years vs. Ryde School.

On a freezing cold evening on Vectis Field in front of a hefty crowd, Christ the King College, led by Dan Whitham, started very slowly. The Ryde side began fast and showed excellent athletic ability early on with some real pace up front and on the wings. Chris Turner in goal pulled off a good early save from a low shot, and Ryde had a number of chances early on after some success from the pace down the left wing. Tom King was instructed by defensive captain Ben Harvey to switch, only Ben is even slower than Tom and was well beaten 3 or 4 times by the Left winger. Khari Benger showed good pace at times to cover the defence, and Zach Saunders was very solid on his side throughout the game.

Despite the early onset, Christ the King College settled into the game and pinched a goal against the run of play, for the first time finding talisman James Meadus in space. He turned and fired quickly into the far bottom corner of the net- Ryde were stunned, Christ the King College leading 1-0.

We then settled into the game playing some good football in midfield from the impressive captain Dan, and Keelan Walsh. Despite this, Ryde came back at us again with deliveries over the top for their for-wards to run onto. Once again they made it round the back of Harvey and leaving Chris isolated in goal, the forward then tucked it home with ease, 1-1. Ryde were now well and truly on top, looking dan-gerous other than the offside line from our disciplined back four.

Chances ebbed and flowed and it looked like something speculative might then re-open the scoring. Chris unfortunately at fault in the Christ the King College goal. After having told me how he was such a good keeper, I was actually impressed early on, however this was short-lived, unfortunately for the team. Chris arrogantly allowed the Ryde forward to press him, and nonchalantly, in real Chris Turner fashion he Cruyff turned the opponent inside out, much to the crowd ’s pleasure with the cheers that followed. Unfortunately it was hero to zero time for Chris, who was now on the edge of his 18 yard box, with acres of space, he went to clear the ball downfield, Chris of course scuffed the ball into midfield where a Ryde player calmly controlled and lobbed Chris from near enough the halfway line. A blunder well worth a Christmas DVD release.

Christ the King College 2-1 rallied, Alex ‘Berbatov’ Buggie started impacting the game in the forward positions, with some flicks and tricks that were certainly pleasing the crowd. Keelan fed Tom Stone down the left, with not long to go in the first half, Tom won a free kick with some neat dribbling. Whitham crossed in deep and with powerhouses Buggie and Meadus pressuring the Goalie he inevita-bly dropped the ball 3 yards out, a real ‘Meadus Touch’ for Christ the King College with the striker firing home. 2-2 and the half time whistle blew.

The second half was a tired performance from Christ the King College who defended for the majority of the half. A straight swap had seen the embarrassed Ben Harvey and the equally embarrassed Chris Turner switch goalkeeper for right back, it couldn’t get worse for the two.

‘Oh wait’, of course it could. Christ the King College conceded a free kick around 35 yards out to which the Ryde player kindly chipped the ball goalwards with no pace on it whatsoever. Ben was left stranded in the muddy goalmouth, struggling to reach the bar, the ball inevitably sailed over him. 3-2 Ryde and a literal uphill struggle for the Purples.

Substitutes were much needed for the unfit Christ the King College side. Buggie and Meadus both had to be switched and the impressive Adam Newton too (who has his own songs by the Christ the King College fans): it goes like this:

‘We’ve got newton, ADAM newton, We just don’t think you understand,

When goals come easy, He looks like Ron Weasley, We’ve got Adam Newton!

Christ the King College Weekly News Page 5

Any way I digress, we really needed to make use of the roll on roll off substitutes. Charlie Pitcher fired a first time shot on target showing good pace, and the now frustrated Keelan was getting forward searching for the equaliser. We had a few chances and left our defence vulnerable at times. Chris was now playing out from defence and looked good at centre back, after losing the strong Tom King to injury. Ethan Squibb had a good chance, again Ryde defenders blocked. In the dying moments we threw eve-rything at the defence of Ryde, literally. Newton was back on, much to the fans delight, and we shoved Buggie back on without making a replacement. The 12 man Christ the King College side were dominat-ing now and Chris surged out of defence with the ball. He played a neat one, two with Pitcher, and crossed into the box. A scramble from the Ryde defence left Fan Favourite Newton free to poke home from 2 yards!!! 3-3, the crowd went wild!

Ryde had one last corner before the end, and we de-fended well, Ben Harvey pulling off a strong save from another goalmouth scramble to rectify his previous blunder, and the final whistle blew. 3-3 a truly enjoyable occasion. We then threw a Penalty shootout, light was fading and Ben was now confident he would save all the penalties. We went for it knowing we could be heroes! Ben selected the right way on the first 3 penalties and even laid a hand on one, they all went in…

Buggie scored calmly-never in doubt, and so did Kee-lan. Tom Stone had his strong shot saved, and Chris also scored meaning Ben had to save the last penalty to remain in the shootout. Much to his displeasure he went the wrong way, and Ryde won- 5-4 on penalties. A terrific evening, superb fun, and great spirit from both sides. Thank you to Mr T Dye (small/new Mr Dye) who brought the Ryde side over after his loan spell to the School. The Fans left happy, what a great game. Mr H Dye (the tall/old one).
