TMA 04 and beyond: if she can make it so can you

Page 2: Tutorial 5

From the last TMA

1. Think carefully about your evidence needs to be used

2. The appendix needs to be referred to and quoted

3. Make sure that you make your own changing practice clear

4. Avoid ‘citing’ the EYFS etc use the originals.

Page 3: Tutorial 5

Further considerations:

• Use the lead sentences of your paragraphs

• Make an introduction: include ethical statement, any definitions needed, indication of structure, area of focus.

• Make a conclusion: highlight your main points

• When writing try to use materials to question practice…your practice

Page 4: Tutorial 5

TMA 04• You must get a minimum of 30%

• Write an analytical account of key elements of one child’s learning and development – over a period of at least one week 1000 words

• This can be more than one week• Analytical -• Take X apart, identify and describe its main

components• An answer to a TMA that asks you to 'analyse X' often

needs to be very logical and carefully structured.

Page 5: Tutorial 5

TMA 04• Account- an explanation… explain the reasons for,

clarify or give reasons for X see http://www.open.ac.uk/skillsforstudy/answer-process-words.php

• Key elements-what is really crucial? Might be from the EYFS/NC or you could draw key points form course materials

Planning-1000 words• 4 or 5 main points…4 or 5 paragraphs• Observations and evidence in appendix• Refer to and ‘quote’ your evidence• Analyse the evidence: try to find a tension a

situation where it could be thought of one way or the other.

• Match the evidence to course materials: must use Block 5 and EYFS…contrasting theories would show underlying values

Page 7: Tutorial 5

Focus• There should be a clear focus on your chosen area• You should look at wider learning but avoid going too

deeply into these: suggested areas are creativity, propensity (disposition); technology use. Consider the ‘holistic’…think about meaning.

• Learning may be intended or intended

Page 8: Tutorial 5

Part 2- your role• Use evidence of your input into the planning and

learning environment• Answer the question: How do you promote learning? • How do you act as a link between the EYFS and the s

place where children learn?• Provide an analysis of the way you work with

colleagues and the wider community: if this does not happen explain

Page 9: Tutorial 5

Annotated resource list-500 words select your list• Should contain much of the statutory material covered

EYFS, ECM, Common Core framework• If linking to a website make sure that it is to the relevant

pages e.g. not www.surrey.gov.uk• Is not a list of references: show you know what the

document is about: the element of reflection on the materials is strong

• e.g. EYFS-
