Idol WorshipLooks as though ourreaders agree with us: There is some-thing about Harry. “I love him,”Stephanie Lofstrand wrote of the Amer ica n Id ol judg e. “His musicknowledge, honesty and fatherly adviceare what the show needed. Plus, he andKeith Urban are hilarious together.”Harry is “truthful to the contestants, which they need,” Tina Lamb noted,

while Sandi Smith believes the showshould have had a judge like himfrom Day 1. “I hope he will continue,”she wrote. Robert Anthony, however, thought his inclusion on the panel was ultimately just a case of too little, too late. “As brilliantly gifted as he is,nothing can save Idol ,” he wrote.“Retire this old warhorse before it getsany more painful to watch. Bravo to TheVoice for reinventing this brand!”

Quick ClicksHeather Moore Shep-pard cosigned our critic Matt Roush’sopinion that episodes of series likeHouse of Cards might be best sa-vored over a number of days insteadof devoured all at once [StreamingHighlights, 3/10]. “I got so burned-outbingeing on House of Cards that I

couldn’t nish the season,” she wrote.“An occasional binge is fun, but theanticipation of watching shows a littleat a time is even more rewarding.” …Diane Katz enjoyed our story onParenthood scene stealer MaxBurkholder. “Thank you for highlight-ing this wonderful young actor,” she wrote. “As a special-education teacher,I feel his performance as a child withAsperger’s has been fantastic! Heshould be nominated for an Emmy.” We think so, too!

FORGET CATFIGHTS AND fashion shows. These days, reality TV is becoming increasingly about court datesand potential prison uniforms. The Real Housewives of New Jersey ’s Teresa Giudice and her husband, Joe, arecurrently awaiting sentencing after pleading guilty to

39 counts of fraud, and Mob Wives: New Blood star AliciaDiMichele is seeing how much time she’ll serve forembezzlement and union fraud.

Some stars have committed crimes on their shows: Amber Portwood, of MTV’s Teen Mom , pleaded guilty totwo counts of felony domestic battery after she was seenhitting Gary Shirley, the father of her child, on an episodeof the series. (She also later served 17 months in prisonfor violating terms of her probation in a drug case.)Others are alleged to have committed violations offcamera, such as Black Ink Crew ’s Richard “O’S--t”

Duncan, who faces up to ve years in prison for a felonygun charge (police allegedly found a gun in a car Duncan was driving; both the gun and car were registered to afriend visiting from South Carolina). Duncan is currentlydealing with the charges; he’ll appear in the show’s

third season, premieringMarch 31, which will coverthe ongoing case.

While no showrunner wants to wake up to a re-port about a cast member in legal trouble, “it’s no differ-

ent than if an actor in a drama series gets arrested for aDUI,” one veteran reality producer says. “You managethe situation as it unfolds.”

The Giudices’ legal misdeeds “will very much bea part of the show next season,” Housewives executiveproducer Andy Cohen recently told us, though Bravo won’t reveal how much the couple will appear in Sea-son 6, which is currently shooting. Teresa’s sentencingis set for July 8—she faces up to 27 months in prison.Joe, an Italian citizen, could be deported.

As for the extent to which the court proceedings and

their aftermath make it on air, that often depends on thepresiding judge, who can prohibit a defendant from talk-ing about the case on camera during the trial, says enter-tainment lawyer John Fagerholm. “[However,] that’s nota problem if the show airs after the trial ends,” Fagerholm

The Giudices (left) leavecourt in Newark, New Jer-sey, on March 4. “Thank youall for your love and sup-port of my family and mykids,” Teresa tweeted;Portwood (below, in Febru-ary 2012) was sentenced tove years in prison but wasreleased in November 2013

says. Attorneys generally advise clients to stayout of the limelight during a trial, but there’snothing legally preventing cast members fromlming their shows.

But after sentencing? Even in cases ofhouse arrest, the whims of the gavel hold sway.“The judge can impose conditions, like who you hang out with and who’s allowed in thehouse,” Fagerholm says. While a judge couldforbid camera crews from entering a convict’shome, even prison time doesn’t mean you’veseen the last of a reality star. “You can be in

prison and still work on a show,” Fagerholmsays, “as long as the prison allows the produc-tion company to lm.”

More good news for reality cons: Accordingto Fagerholm, they can still earn a salary froma show as long as they aren’t proting from thecrime for which they were convicted. Whetherthey get to enjoy that cash is another story. Inthe case of Mob Wives ’ DiMichele, a judgecan’t specically order her to fork over show wages as resti tution; he or she can, however,

make the amount of restitution comparableto wages earned. “The only government bodyI know of that cansay, ‘We’re takingt h i s m o n e y,’ ”Fagerholm says,“is the IRS.” — With reporting by Michael Schneider

AUSTIN’S SOUTH BY Southwest (SXSW) festival typically celebrates the music, film and digital worlds, but this year, for the first time, the event carved out roomfor television. World premieres of new series included Showtime’s Penny Dreadful ,HBO’s Silicon Valley , TNT’sThe Last Ship and AMC’sHalt and Catch Fire. Here’s

what else went on. —Stephen Battaglio, Rob Moynihan and Michael Schneider

MAKING MORE BACON Kevin Bacon, in town to commemorate the 20thanniversary of Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon, as well as to tout his SixDegrees.orgcharity, was celebrating a third-season renewal of The Following. He saysthere’s plenty of opportunity to reinvent the Fox thriller each year: “You canintroduce new characters. We can get rid of characters. Who knows, we couldgo to a different place.” But don’t expect to see his Ryan Hardy get too com-fortable. “I think people are really hungry for him to have some wins. And hehas been able to have some triumphs,” Bacon says. “But I like to see him getbeat up. I like to see him struggle and make mistakes. I don’t want him toalways use the best judgment possible. To me, that’s not that interesting.”ZOMBIES TAKE OVER THE WEB To further expand The Walking Dead ’s

universe, AMC is planning a fourth series of webisodes directed by the show’sspecial-effects guru, Greg Nicotero. While a concept has not been confirmed,Nicotero suggests that existing characters could appear, and he would like to

    TV Tackles Texas

On March 7, Harlem tattoo artist Duncan (withCeaser Emmanuel) tweeted, “I need to stayoutta trouble; I f---in’ hate these court days”

DiMichele faces upto six months in jailand a $96,000 fine;still, she says shemight be up forSeason 5 of MobWives: New Blood

Bacon (left) says hewas “at rst horried”by the Six Degrees ofKevin Bacon game butnow embraces it;Meyers (below) calledhis Late Night a “workin progress”

explore the backstory of brothers Daryl (Norman Reedus) and Merle (MichaelRooker). He also wants to add a twist to the walkers. “The TV show shootsfrom May to November, and I’d love to see what would happen in winter,”Nicotero says. “Maybe see some frozen popsicle zombies!”LATE-NIGHT LAUGHSAustin played host to a number of late-nightshows, as ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel and Bravo’s Andy Cohen did a week’s worthof programs from the city. “It’s fun for people to get a look at [the festival],”says Kimmel, who completed a barbecue tour of Austin and tried to enrollsidekick/security guard Guillermo into the University of Texas. NBC’s SethMeyers and TBS’s Pete Holmes also touted their shows with panel discus-sions; being a tech geek was not a requirement. “I have a BlackBerry,” Meyerssaid when asked to describe his social-media habits. “So nothing works.”SCIENCE GETS COOL Two years ago, a Facebook pal of college student EliseAndrew told her he was bored with the science-related news stories, facts andphotos she posted and suggested she create a science-specific page peoplecould sign up to follow if they were interested. “I got a thousand followersthe first day, and it never stopped growing,” says Andrew, a native of Suffolk,

England. More than 10 million followers later, she has a deal to turn the page, called “I F---ing Love Science,” into a series for the Science Channel, which islooking at a fall debut ( The Late Late Show host Craig Ferguson is an execu-tive producer). But Andrew is reluctant about becoming a TV star. “Theywant me to be on the show,” she says. “Maybe one day.”

“RAISING HOPE STARTED with a father-daughter rela-tionship and ends on that theme,” says exec producer MikeMariana about the comedy’s nal episode (April 4, Fox). Yet, while the premiere was about single dad Jimmy (LucasNeff, far left, with Shannon Woodward, Martha Plimptonand Garret Dillahunt) and his baby, Hope (Baylie and Rylie

Cregut), the nale focuses on Virginia (Plimpton) and herpreviously deadbeat dad, Arnold (Jeffrey Tambor), who

returns to town with two surprises: the dream wedding Vir-ginia and Burt (Dillahunt) couldn’t afford (hence the royal wedding garb) and Kenny Loggins (hence the dropped jaws). THE OSCARS ARE the Super Bowl of

awards shows, this year hitting a rat-ings high unseen for nonsports pro-gramming since the Friends nale adecade ago. Quarterback/host EllenDeGeneres worked the cavernousDolby Theatre with enough disarm-ing charm that you could almostforget how long the night was.(Good to know we weren’t the onlyones craving pizza.)

But there’s always room for im-

provement, so here are some sugges-tions to make the show even livelier:

Loosen up, people! DeGeneres hasthe gift of friendly, folksy camarade-rie, putting even the most self-important of superstars at ease. Theshow’s best moments were sponta-neous: the scrambling for position toget in Ellen’s Twitter-busting sele,Lupita Nyong’o shimmying with

Pharrell Williams. Much more ofthat, please. Why let the GoldenGlobes have all the fun?Own the mistakes. So much of Oscarnight is rigidly canned that when an

    incredible flub occurs, like Tron

Vajolta’s mangling of Idina Menzel’sname, take advantage of it. De Generesmissed an opportunity by not mak-ing this an instant running gag andbeating the Internet at its own game.Stop the montage madness! Even ina relatively painless Academy Awardsshow, the length is numbing. Point-lessly repetitive mash-ups like this year’s var iations on a hero themehelped push the telecast to three and

a half hours. There’s an entire cate-gory devoted to editing. Take the hint.Respect the legends. I foundDeGeneres’s “female impersonator”crack about Liza Minnelli funnierthan Liza did, but I was less amused when Minnelli and her sibs merelytook a silent bow during the Wizardof Oz tribute to their mother, JudyGarland. And when you have real-life heroes like Captain Phillips and

Philomena in the house, let them in-troduce the films that put them onthe Oscars’ radar.

    ROUSH REVIEW BY MATT ROUSH

HAVEN’T WE MET somewhere before? There’s a lot ofthat déjà view feeling going around this midseason, witha number of new series seeming like old times. Hewing toreadily recognizable formulas, they at rst glance sendout a distinctly been-there, seen-that vibe. But this isn’tnecessarily a bad thing. Much of TV is meant to providea comfort zone, and there are probably only so many

ways to approach genres as disparate yet entrenched asfamily and ensemble comedies, reality-competitionshows and serialized thrillers. Familiarity can even breedcontentment if the characters and the execution make itall seem somehow fresh. After too much of a safe thing,of course, it does make you wonder when and where thenext original idea will come from. May it arrive soon.

    CRISIS Sundays, 10/9c, NBC

Feels like: Hostages , onlythis conspiracy-ladenD.C. thriller executes itsbold plan out in theopen, as a mastermindengineers the kidnap-ping of a bus full of kidswhose rich and powerfulparents (including thepresident) are forced todo whatever it takes,

legal or usually not, toget them back.Feeling it? For now, butfor how long? Lots oftwists unfold in the open-ing chapters, and GillianAnderson is ravishing asa captain of industrywhose daughter (or isshe?) is among the ab-ducted and whose es-tranged sister (RachaelTaylor) leads the FBIrescue team. It’s con-trived, for sure, and withHostages , we’ve seenhow quickly this kind ofmelodrama can lapseinto overheated silliness.

JIM HENSON’SCREATURE SHOPCHALLENGESeries premiere: Tuesday, 3/25, 10/9c, Syfy

Feels like: An almostshot-for-shot copy ofSyfy’sFace Off , completewith a fetching femalehost ( Farscape ’s Gigi Edg-ley); insane time limits forcontestants to produceelaborate creatures; and

a three-member judgingpanel, including BrianHenson (Jim’s son andchairman of the JimHenson Company).Feeling it? It’s hard notto, especially if, like me,you’re already a FaceOff and Henson fan.Creativity overflows inthe workroom, andthere’s the added com-plication of making thecostumes functional forthe puppeteers insidethem. The “Screen Test”reveals can be breath-taking, and the critiquesare smartly constructive.

SURVIVING JACK Series premiere:Thursday, 3/27,9:30/8:30c, Fox

Feels like: That ’70s Show , though now itseems even 1991 quali-fies as nostalgia. Thiscomic memoir focuseson awkwardly ganglyfreshman Frankie (Con-nor Buckley) and thetough love he regularlyendures from his belli-cose bully of a dad, Jack(Christopher Meloni ), acynical oncologist.Feeling it? Slowly butsurely. Jack’s “surroundedby idiots” misanthropyand drill-sergeant par-enting could wear thin, but Meloni sells thegruffness with an under-lying intelligence andwarmth. While the periodreferences (including anobsession with AmericanGladiators ) often feelforced, the humiliations

of high school are a time-less source of coming-of-age humor.

FRIENDS WITHBETTER LIVES Series premiere:Monday, 3/31, 9/8c, CBS

Feels like: Did someonesay Friends? Six veryattractive people hangout—in a married couple’sliving room, not a coffee-house (these buds beingin their 30s, after all)—cracking crass sex jokeswhile assessing the stateof their relationships.Feeling it? Not yet. KevinConnolly (Entourage )and Majandra Delfino

are appealing as self-deprecating parents (ofan invisible-so-far child)fretting that the thrill isgone, but their inner circletends to be either innocu-ous or, more frequently, obnoxious. The latter isembodied by James VanDer Beek, newly singleand pining for his ex,who trades barbs withZoe Lister-Jones as a

bitter spinster in themaking. These friendscould use better writing.

    BELIEVESundays, 9/8c, NBC

Feels like: Touch (re-member that short-livedKiefer Sutherland mis-fire?), with more StephenKing tossed in. This is thestory of Bo ( Johnny Se-quoyah ), a little girl withamazing, but madden-ingly unspecified, para-normal powers who goeson the run from evil as-sassins with the help of ascruffy death-row escap-ee ( Jake McLaughlin ).Feeling it? Despite Oscarwinner Alfonso Cuarón’s(Gravity ) stylish directionof the pilot episode, notso much. The actionsequences pack a sus-penseful visual wallop, but the conflicts arecartoonishly drawn andit’s hard to believe thatCuarón and fellow execu-tive producer J.J. “So many babies havebeen born to the castand crew since westarted. People havedied,” says Radnor. “Alot can happen on andoff screen in nine years. You see the arc of life”

“TANGO! YOU’RE TANGOING!” Thephotographer at TV G UIDE M AGAZINE’scover shoot encourages Josh Radnorand Cristin Milioti to unleash theirinner Latin groove. They laugh. Dip.Embrace. Lock eyes. Spin. Entwinelegs. Almost fall. Hold each other up.

Just like the loving goofball soulmates they play on How I Met Your Mother— idealistic architect TedMosby and his future bride, stillknown only as the Mother.

The small audience of makeupartists and photo assistants breaksinto impromptu applause as thephotographer shouts , “Great ! You’re do ne !” Mi lio ti lo ok s sur-prised: “We are?”

Sadly, it’s true. Afternine seasons, the genre-stretching sitcom about aguy looking for his one truelove will have its last dancein an hour-long farewell onMarch 31.

For Radnor, this nal season hasbeen extremely gratifying. ThoughTed hasn’t ofcially met the Mother,flash-forwards have shown many

happy milestones in his life with the woman fans first gl impsed in theSeason 8 nale. (“I had a moment ofpanic when I realized how importantthe role was!” confesses Milioti.)

“One of the things that kept megoing when I got knocked aroundand heartbroken for nine years,”Radnor says, “was knowing the whole thing was rigged to give Ted aromantic victory in the end.”

    That victory was hard-won. Let’s

see: There was the time dermatologistStella (Sarah Chalke) left him at thealtar and the second time he thoughtbaker Victoria (Ashley Williams) was“the one.” Not to mention the paradeof crushes and bad dates, whichincluded randy receptionist Abby(Britney Spears) and Slutty Pumpkin(Katie Holmes), to name a few. And,of course, there was his longtime

    love for journalist pal

Robin (Cobie Smulders), who i s marrying Ted’ssuave best friend, Barney(Neil Patrick Harris).

Their wedding weekendat the Farhampton Inn hasbeen the focus of the cur-

rent season. And, so far, it’s been 56hours of hilarity—with the occa-sional drama: Ted nally let go of hisfeelings for Robin; matron of honor

and spunky art lover Lily (AlysonHannigan) and her husband, Ted’ssensitive college roommate, lawyerMarshall (Jason Segel), fought andthen made up; Barney got drunk; etc.

The finale “picks up right afterBarney and Robin’s wedding andbecomes this time machine thattakes us into the future,” teases exec-utive producer Craig Thomas, whocreated the show with college friendCarter Bays. “It tells the story of the

17 years between May 2013 and 2030,complete with many ups and downs.”

Stated more simply: “It’s a doozy,”says Hannigan, sitting in the gang’s well-worn booth at MacLaren’s onFox’s Stage 22, where HIMYM hasshot for nine seasons. “I’m reallygoing to miss everyone.”

At the last table read, held on Val-entine’s Day (“Just rip my heart out,”Hannigan says of the scheduling), the

cast went over the script for the seriesender, and there were waterworks.“We were just shy of solving Califor-nia’s historic drought,” says Thomas.

Though details from the big naleremain top secret, we do know thehour will include a brief appearanceby a beloved guest star. “A fun, ran-dom one from the past,” Thomashints. It also might feature a robot ina tuxedo; a scene at that fateful Far-

hampton train station; the momentthat Ted and the Mother first meet;and, nally , her name. “The very endof the episode—the last two minutesof it—is exactly what we’d planned

“Sandcastles in the Sand” (Season 3)“The second music video fromRobin Sparkles!” says Smulders.“For one whole day, I got to sing, dance and work on choreography.”

    JOSH RADNOR

“The Last Forever” (Season 9)“I really enjoy working with Cris-tin,” says Radnor of the top secretnale. “Her character makes Tedsee himself in a different way. Shereally is his perfect match.”

    NEIL PATRICK HARRIS

“Showdown” (Season 2)“Barney’s completely over-whelmed with delusion,” Harrissays of the episode that featuredhis character’s quest to get onThe Price Is Right so he could meetBob Barker, who Barney believedwas his biological father.

    JASON SEGEL

“Twelve Horny Women” (Season 8)“I love it when Marshall is lawyer-ing!” Segel says of this episode, which centers on the toughestcourt case of his career—and in-spires him to try to become a judge.

    ALYSON HANNIGAN

“Bad News” (Season 6)“That moment Lily tells Marshallthat his father passed away,”Hannigan says, “it was so intense,we did it in one take.”

out years ago,” Thomas says. “Weeven shot a part of the last sequenceback in 2006 with Ted’s kids, beforethey became the adults they are now.”

The nale will also boast some ofthe show’s signature jokes and ash-backs, lightning-fast scenes andnods to its classic catchphrases.(“Slap bet”—you will be missed!)

This quirkiness is one thing thatmade CBS fall in love with HIMYM in2005, but that wasn’t all. “It was some-thing we’d never seen: a long-runningmythology baked into the concept ofthe show,” says Nina Tassler, chair-man of CBS Entertainment. “There was a beautifully orchestrated bal-ance of extremely funny writing withan emotional depth and complexity.”

That emotional depth was evenpart of the series’ most extreme char-acter, Barney, a suit-obsessed guy whokept a life-size Stormtrooper costumein his living room and made woman-izing an Olympic sport. But he stillsomehow managed to seem tender.

    “Barney is a passionate person,

but there’s this fragility underneath,”says Harris, pointing to momentslike his character’s überromanticproposal. “Robin is the same.”

The biggest skeleton in Robin’scloset? Her secret history as Canadianteen pop star Robin Sparkles. “Thething I love most about my characteris her ’80s throwback,” Smulderssays. “But because of where shecame from, Robin was closed offfrom serious relationships. She reallyhad to learn how to love.”

Marshall and Lily, on the otherhand, have always been much moresolid. “The writers were never afraidto just let Marshall and Lily be hotfor each other, to love and supporteach other,” Segel says. “They’re notrolling their eyes at each other’s jokes. In a cynical entertainmentlandscape, it’s nice to see some-thing pure like that.”

HIMYM has certainly left its markon the entertainment landscape—and on CBS. The show, which aver-aged 9.8 million viewers this season, has been the network’s youngest-skewing comedy since it premiered. It scores big in syndication, and it’seven spawned a spinoff of sorts: the

upcoming How I Met Your Dad .But first, producers promise to

wrap up every HIMYM loose end.“We owe that to the fans,” Thomassays. And despite all the theories cir-culating online that the Mother willdie in the nale, Thomas vows, “It’s ahappy ending. It’s all about hope.”

    We can’t wait for it.

“Barney and Robin didn’t want a rela-tionship, but the relationship foundthem,” says Harris (below left, withguest star Ben Vereen and Smulders)of the couple’s tying the knot

“It was kind of out of the box and deedlogic,” Williams (with Dawber) says of Mork & Mindy , which spun off of HappyDays . “It was wild, weird fun. It d idn’tmake sense and it didn’t matter”

OLD PALS ROBIN Williams and PamDawber have found themselves sittingacross from each other on a sound-stage nearly 32 years after shootingthe final episode of Mork & Mindy , theirseminal 1970s sitcom about a hyperbut lovable alien from the planet Orkwho falls for a charming girl next door.

“Pretty amazing, huh?” says Wil-liams, 63. “Yeah,” sighs Dawber, 62,whose guest spot marks her first act-ing role in 14 years.

The two are shooting a scene forthe April 10 episode of Williams’s hitCBS comedy,The Crazy Ones, which

finds his Simon trying to break thingsoff with the travel writer he’s beendating (Dawber). When Simon laterchanges his mind and tries to woo herback, she accuses him of acting “likean alien.” (While the actors nixed anyreference to “shazbot” or “na-nu na-nu,”they say CBS insisted on at least one nodto their classic series.)

Since their sitcom ended, Williams andDawber have seen each other on only a few

occasions (on the set of Williams’s 1991film Hook and at a Big Brothers Big Sisterscharity event she brought him to), butboth slide easily back into the breezycamaraderie that made Mork and Mindyone of TV’s most memorable couples.

Did you ever think you would worktogether again?Dawber: My son said a couple of years ago,“Mom, do you think I’ll ever get to meet

Robin Williams?” And I told him, “I hopeI get to meet Robin Williams.” [Laughs]Williams: It’s like we never left. And shelooks the same! When she showed up thefirst day, I said, “Dawber Dog—you’re back!”Has it been difficult for you to avoidslipping back into your old characterswhile filming this episode?Williams: Not at all. Simon is a totallydifferent guy than Mork was, with a totallydifferent voice.

Dawber: And was Mindy ever this devel-oped? Let’s get serious. She was justkind of there because she had to be. Shedidn’t even have a job for two years.I didn’t play ball with ABC at the time.

I wouldn’t do [guest spots on] Battle of

the Network Stars or The Love Boat. Sothey were pretty pissed off at me anddidn’t help me out.Williams: But you made that showwork. You made it safe for me. You wereincredible.Dawber: We would crack each other up.Why didn’t you ever get a chance toshoot a farewell episode when Mork &Mindy ended?Williams: I remember vividly that I was

in a giant frog suit shooting Faerie TaleTheatre ’s “The Frog Prince” when I readin the trades that our show was can-celed. I got so pissed. They had neverseen a more angry frog. What do you imagine happened toMork and Mindy? Do you think theystayed together?Williams: Oh, I think so. But if you go byOrkan aging rules, Mork would be a fetusby now. [Laughs]

Pam, your last TV credit was in 1999.What have you been up to?Dawber: Raising my children.[Dawber and husband MarkHarmon have two sons, Sean,

25, and Ty, 21.] Mark was doing Chi-cago Hope and then NCIS , so I had mytap shoes on for everybody. But Iliked driving my kids to school. Thatwas when we would have our sextalks—when they didn’t have to lookat me!Williams: Too bad the GPS couldn’tdo that.So how did you now land on TheCrazy Ones ?Williams: I suggested her butthought, “If it happens, wonderful.”I wasn’t sure we’d get her.Pam, what did Mark think about

your reuniting with Robin?Dawber: Oh, he said, “Pammy, I’m just so happy.” He knows how I havedoubted myself. But Mark is the mostsupportive husband. He’s so proud.Williams: He was very lovely with me

when I called and asked, “Are you OK withme being with your wife?”Your characters on The Crazy Ones have a complicated relationship. Howdo they meet?

Williams: She’s an author I met at a booksigning. I fall for her and it’s very impul-sive. But it doesn’t work out, which isbittersweet. But I would love for her tocome back again. It’d be amazing.Dawber: To be able to come back everynow and then would be wonderful!Pam, how else is the character you’replaying different from Mindy?Dawber: Oh, my gosh, she has somethingto do! [ Laughs] When the producers put

their toes in the water and asked if Iwanted to do this, I told them, “Only ifthere’s never a Mindy-like line where shesays, ‘Oh, Simon, what are you doing?’ ”I’m lucky that, this time, my character isalmost as out there as Robin’s is.Williams: That’s the attraction betweenthem. I love how she says to Simon’sdaughter, Sydney [Sarah Michelle Gellar],“Oh, balls!”Dawber: I get to say “balls.” We couldn’t

even say “crud” on Mork & Mindy .No crud? Why not?Williams: Because it’s driedsperm. So if someone offersyou crud, be careful!

EITHER AMY SCHUMER is the mostmodest woman in show business—or else she needs to have her hearing

checked. Consider the facts: The32-year-old’s surprise Comedy Cen-tral hit, Inside Amy Schumer , is enter-ing its sophomore season with arabid following. Like Schumer her-self, the series—a kinetic mix ofsketches, man-on-the-street-styleinterviews and her live stand-up—isat turns racy, shrewd and deliciously warped, saved from actual wicked-ness by an undercurrent of chipper

naïveté. (It’s no surprise that Schumercites Shirley Temple as a major inspi-ration.) She is also touring the coun-try with her wildly popular stand-upact—while simultaneously writing

And yet, when asked about becoming thenext big thing—Kristen Wiig compar-isons come to mind—she balks.“Um, I hear myself referred to as thenext Kristen Wiig zero times per week,” responds Schumer, adding,“but I would love that to be true.Hey, I’ll take Paula Deen’s career if itmeans money is coming in.” Here’s why Schumer’s stock is about to soar.

When did it hit you that people—thatis, a lot of people—were watching In- side Amy Schumer ? When the ratingsrst came in, [Comedy Central] waslike, “Oh, um, 3 million people watche d last ni ght .” I was like,“What?” It sounded like an accident. Now that you’re going into Season 2, isthere any pressure to live up to expec-tations? I don’t feel any pressure todeliver. Maybe I should. Before we went back into the writing room for

this season, there was that momentof, “Oh, my God, I don’t have any-thing else to say. What if this season

sucks?” But then we got in there andit was so much more exciting, be-cause this time we knew what we were doing.Plus, there’s a new addition to the writ-ing staff: your sister, Kim Caramele, four years your junior. We have a verysimilar sensibility—my whole goalsince she was born has been tryingto make her laugh. I wanted her forSeason 1, but she had a job and a

husband and a life in Chicago. When we got renewed, she was my firs tphone call.Upcoming guest stars include JoshCharles, Zach Braff, Parker Posey,

Rachel Dratch, Janeane Garofalo andPaul Giamatti. Someone’s popular!Strangely, a lo t of those people aremy friends. But with Paul Giamatti, Iran into him on the street andbegged him. He plays God—I have aherpes scare and he appears. That’skind of my highlight. Our scheduled time for this interviewwas 8:40am. Is that any indication ofhow overextended you are these days?I’m like Scarlett Johansson in Her —every ounce of my energy and mindare being used from the second I wake up. Right now, I’m in L.A.—latertoday, I’m flying to Milwaukee andthen sleeping in Detroit. I’m writingthis movie and editing my TV show, all while trying not to have massive weight gain and remember ing toshower. If you smelled my hair rightnow, you’d say, “Good luck with oneof those things.”Speaking of the movie: It’s calledTrainwreck . How did that project come

to be? Judd and I go to the sameCrunch gym. [ Laughs ] Just kidding. He heard me on Howard Stern and

he keeps up with New York comics,so that’s why we rst had a meeting.

We even tual ly landed on a st or yabout a girl whose self-destructivehabits are catching up with her, andshe’s thrown off by falling in love andhitting rock bottom. If it’s a hit, are you prepared to be ultra-famous? No way. That part I cannoteven think about right now. Especiallyconsidering the way I go out in pub-lic, which is not appealing to any-body—and when you’re famous, they take your picture. What’s an average fan encounter likefor you these days? They come upand say, “I’m sorry, I don’t want to bethis guy, but can we do a picture?” And I say, “Yeah.” And they say, “Idon’t really know how to work this.” And I say, “You just press this part,”and they say, “Can we do anotherone?” and I say, “Yes, sure.”Your humor can be pretty raunchy. Doyou ever get resistance from peoplewho want you to be more ladylike? Iencounter that every day. It makessome people angry, because they want everybody to t into their ideaof what a girl is supposed to be. Idon’t let it slow me down. Every day

I get a tweet that says, “I usually don’tthink women are funny, but youare.” What are they basing that on?In the stand-up world, if you killand people laugh, then you’re funny—no question about it.You were on the reality competitionLast Comic Standing in 2007. Is it weirdthat everyone is treating you likean overnight success now? I’ve beendoing stand-up and auditioning for

around 10 years, but I guess that’show it is—people have never heardof you, then you do something theylike and it’s as if you just appeared forthem out of thin air.Your ex-boyfriend Anthony Jeselnik hada show on Comedy Central that wascanceled just as your star began to rise.Does it feel as though you’re living aTaylor Swift–revenge-fantasy song?Having a TV show canceled is too

IS IT ANY surprise Reign ’s sets are fit for a queen? TheFrench palace where the newly wed Mary Stuart (AdelaideKane) lives—actually on a Toronto soundstage—isappropriately luxe, with props culled from such far-ung

locations as Hungary and customized walls featuringFrance’s eur-de-lis and thistle, the national symbol ofMary’s native Scotland. In her chambers alone, saysproduction designer Phillip Barker, “we had about 15painters on ladders for 10 days, creating motifs by hand.”

While The CW’s period soap has gotten knocked for itscreative retelling of 16th-century history, Barker tookpains to build authentic sets, studying both Europeanlms and paintings depicting the era. Even the understated

palette is appropriate, given that sunlight streamingthrough the palace’s many windows would have faded col-ors over time. “It’s also a nice contrast with Adelaide’s darkhair and intense eyes,” notes set decorator Robert Hep-burn. “She looks really good in there.” Royally good, in fact.

THE THRONE ROOM This set boasts 30-foot-tallwalls and details that pay tribute to the family’s richhistory. The artwork over the replace depicts a sala-mander, the emblem of Prince Francis’s grandfather.“He brought the Italian Renaissance style into France,”notes Barker. The tiled design on the oor is inspiredby the actual French royal palace and incorporatesthe initials of Francis’s father, Henry, and mother,Catherine (Megan Follows, right, with Toby Regbo). It was once bel ieved, says Barker, that there was “aD in there for Diane , the king’s lover. That’s since been

refuted by scholars I’ve talked to, who say it’s justanother C backward.”

Mary is often seen socializing in her chamber with herladies-in-waiting, so Hepburn strives to keep the lounge areawarm and inviting. The antique throws—one silk-velvet, theother wolf’s fur—draped over the fainting couch are perfectfor the cold-weather episodes, “because they would’ve beenfreezing in a big palace like that,” he says. The small table, anEast Indian piece inlaid with mother-of-pearl that Hepburnfound in Toronto, is actually not vintage: “I sent it to ourscenic shop and they aged it up for me!”

MARY’S CHAMBERS The teenage queen(Kane, with Torrance Coombs) uses her boudoirfor more than just leisure! “She’s a head ofstate,” Hepburn says, “so she’s gotta take careof business, too.” And that includes keepingup with offi cial correspondence (hence thestationery and pewter inkwell) and studyingmaps of Europe, which were printed on period-appropriate paper. The desk itself is a remnantof another regal drama, Showtime’s The Borgias .Hepburn had the piece, originally a dark oak, stripped and renished to look more feminine:“It’s a youthful show, and I wanted to have abohemian-chic thing going on. And her publicist,Mike (Matt Walsh); dedicated bodyman, Gary ( Tony Hale); workhorsechief of staff, Amy (Anna Chlumsky);and opportunist deputy, Dan (ReidScott) will be out of their D.C. depthas well, guiding the VP as she kissesbabies—and butts.

“That’s another kind of comfortzone they wi l l a l l be out of ,”Chlumsky notes. “They’re in front ofthe public, and they have to benice .” Kindness, after all, is not theirforte. “And let’s face it,” adds Louis-Dreyfus, “Selina is impossible.” Atleast the packing will be easy. Fakesmiles? Check. Made-up excuses toget out of unwanted conversations?Check. Xanax? Check.

Amy and Dan will also competeto be Selina’s campaign manager.“Dan wants it more than anythingever,” says Scott. “He would sell hisown family for the job.” And Garystarts questioning being a grownman who makes a living carryingSelina’s purse—especially when sheis so cruel to him. “For so long,Selina would cuss him out, and he’d just hear ‘rainbows’ and ‘unicorns,’ ”

Hale says. “He’s now beginning tosee behind the curtain.”

Also on tap: another trip abroad, this time to London. (It remains to beseen whether the excursion will be as

hilarious as theteam’s memorable jaunt to Hel sinki, where Se li na wasfelt up by the primeminister’s husband). The actors lmed onlocation, but theirlack of any reception

would have almostcertainly given Selinaa meltdown: They

    were overshadowedby Lady Gaga, who

wa s staying at thesame hotel. “There

were swarms of people screaming,”Hale recalls. “One night she dressed asa Christmas tree. It was like a circus!”

Veep has a history of being fairlyprescient when it comes to the circusof politics. Last season, the series fea-tured a government shutdown monthsbefore the real one. In Season 3’s pre-miere (filmed last September), smug Whi te Ho us e liaison Jo na h ( TimSimons) reveals he’s the secret gossip

blogger WestWingMan. A month afterthat was lmed, Obama’s administra-tion discovered a national securityadviser had been anonymously tweet-ing from inside the White House. Hishandle: @NatSecWonk. “People think we’re copying the news,” Iannucci says.“We’re not.” As Selina might say, “That’spretty f---ing great!”

    TEEN WOLFSeason Finale

    10/9c, MTV

SWORD FIGHTS! SHAPE-SHIFTERS!Bad Stiles! Teen Wolf ’s Japanese-myth-soaked third season is going out in a howl of glory tonight, and even thoughfilming such an epic episode means long hours and late nights, nobody’scomplaining. “I have so many people on the crew and in production who loveworking on this series,” says executive producerJeff Davis. And it shows: This has been Teen Wolf ’sboldest season to date, but the finale could leavethings looking pretty grim. After all, warns Davis,“not everyone survives.” So as Scott (Tyler Posey)and Co. prepare to take down the evil spirits thathave been haunting—and hunting—them, fansmight want to steel themselves for some seriousgoodbyes. —Damian Holbrook

POSEY, IN FULLwerewolf makeup, preps forthe season nale’s big ght scene. “We lled the Japanese Garden set from a previous episodewith articial snow for one of the show’s mostcomplex sequences where Scott, Stiles and thegang face off against the nasty Nogitsune [Jap-anese fox spirit] one last time,” Davis explains.

LONELY HUNTER NO more. Davis says thatCrystal Reed’s Alison will have company (ormaybe competition?) next season: “We intro-duced a new faction of werewolf hunters thisyear, and we’re excited to make them a biggerpart in the fourth cycle.”

DYLAN O’BRIEN (STILES) gets a last-minutetouch-up from makeup artist Phyllis Temple.“What’s great about the fourth season being12 episodes is that it allows the actors to gotry their hand at movies,” Davis says. “I can’twait for Dylan’s movie The Maze Runner .”
