One of the most iconic bands in rock his- tory is back in the spring with a new album: “inFinite” by Deep Purple is released on 7 April. Many interpret the suggestive al- bum title and the following “Long Goodbye Tour” as the band’s final retreat from the music business. And the documentary film that accompanies the English band as they write their songs and record them in the studio also seems like something of a fare- well giſt. Euromaxx talks to bassist Roger Glover and drummer Ian Paice about the highlights of their career. Starting FRI 7 April 00:30 CHECK-IN The Pearl on the Elbe The Frauenkirche, the Semperoper and the Zwinger – a magnificent Baroque ensem- ble! With its carefully reconstructed town center, Dresden has much to offer the tour- ist. But the city on the Elbe has an image problem: For two years now, it has been seen as the heartland of the Islamophobic and xenophobic Pegida movement. Rea- son enough for Check-in presenter Nicole Frölich to take a look for herself at the city with around half a million inhabitants. Is Dresden still worth a visit? Starting SAT 8 April 06:03 DOCUMENTA Learning From Athens The documenta is widely seen as the world’s most important exhibition of contemporary art. It took place for the first time in Kassel in 1955 – as a symbol of a new beginning in a western German city scarred by war. For the 14th edition of the documenta, artistic director Adam Szymczyk is consciously focusing attention on a current European flashpoint, a city coping with both an economic and a refugee crisis: Athens. Szymczyk’s motto is: Learn from Athens! This year’s art spectacle opens on 8 April in the Greek capital, before continuing in Kassel from June. For some time already, opinions have been divided over the idea of locating part of the documenta in Athens. And while curators and artists hope it will energize the local arts scene, others sense cultural imperialism. Former Greek finance minister, Yanis Varoufakis, called it a "gimmick" to exploit the tragedy in Greece - like "rich Americans taking a tour in a poor African country." Can the beleaguered city of Athens be more than a picturesque setting for the international art elite? What can the wealthier north learn from a city fighting for its survival? What happens when the art train moves on aſter 100 days? And what purpose can art serve in times of crisis? The documentary Learning From Athens – documenta 14 takes a look behind the scenes of the mammoth show and gauges the mood in the crisis-hit city of Athens. Starting SAT 8 April 19:15 Arts.21 also focuses on documenta 14. The culture magazine meets artists and critics in both locations and asks: Is the exhibition now just a highbrow art circus – or still a genu- ine art happening?
