LOCATION RECCE

Production title: A deadly encounter Philistine ProductionsDirectors: Luis Sanchez 99 Langrbook RoadProducers: Luis Sanchez London Address: Thomas Tallis School Kidbrook SE3 8RAPark Road London SE3 9PX

I will be filming the Tallis TV ident as it’s an ident for the school and I want to show off the school in the ident, specifically targeting the secondary audience of parents and carers who might not know of have forgot what the school looks like. I also chose this location because it’s where equipment being used to create this ident is stored and it’s where the cast member goes to studies so it allows me access to my cast member at short notice. Furthermore it benefits from the advantage of having first aiders on site and being only 5 miles from the Queen Mary’s Hospital.

This building is structurally sound as it was built only recently in late 2011 and has received a wide array of safety checks. It’s also been verified that this school is stable and provides an even surface to mount a tripod on. There is a collection of take always and convenience stores just around the corner from the school and there is a café on site so catering is not a problem. I will not provide free food but food is very accessible.

I’m currently attending this school so I’m in close contact with the people who run the operations at the school and we have there signed permission to film here. This is a privately owned building that is regularly cleaned by cleaners so it’s very hygienic. Filming a majority of the ident inside means we don’t have to worry about the weather too much however if it does rain when filming the external shots the school will provide good cover against the rain so the equipment doesn’t get damaged. The building is also

air conditioned so the building will be well ventilated and therefore the cast and crew may be in a better condition to film. This building also features a lot of fire exits so there shouldn’t be too many health and safety concerns.

This school has approximately 1,500 students currently attending the school so there is a big possibility that students might get into shot or walk by and interrupt filming by talking to the cast and crew. However there will only be diegetic sound used in opening class room scenes and I will be filming in lesson time when a majority of the students will be in lesson.

A majority of my ident will be filmed in the schools hallways, as I need a large area in which I can film a wire streaming in a straight line as to appear as it’s a continuous wire from shot to shot so a hallway would be perfect. A load of hallways may seem boring compared to some of the more interesting rooms however I think it aids the narrative of a long wire leading from all six of the schools buildings to a giant TV positioned in the center of the school. I also think the multicoloured effect that will be created by using multi screen will also look aesthetically appealing especially to my young teenage primary target audience. Also the large area of space also allows me to move fast when filming the wire so I can create a fast paced ident which will also appeal to my young teenage demographic. I could create this effect in post by speeding up the footage however I don’t really like it when it’s done that way it feels unnatural. Filming a majority of my ident in hallways could bring about health and safety concerns as in my ident a long wire will be streaming across the floor and this school has 1,500 students so it could be likely that a student will trip over the wire. Although I will never leave the wire unattended and I will only leave out as long as is necessary so I should minimize the chance of someone tripping over the wire. I will also be filming when most students will be in lesson so it should be unlikely that anyone trips over the wire, however if students are to get out of lesson the first thing they will do is walk into the corridor as they leave lesson so I could still face problems. Furthermore as students come out of the classroom they might not see the wire or have enough time to avoide the wire so the wire could still be a trip hazard. Therefore I will try to film with the wire in the center of the hallway as much as I possibly can. Furthermore there are times in my ident when I need to film a wire going out of a doorway which could cause an obstruction to other staff and students.

There is also part of ident in which I will be filming a wife going down some stairs. This is perhaps the most dangerous part of my ident as I may trip as I won’t be looking where I’m going as I have to look at the screen to make sure my feet don’t make it into shot. This danger is also added to by the fact that I will running down the stairs, which is necessary to maintain the fast pace of my ident. Filming on stairs could also prove to be an obstruction to other students and staff who need to get around the school. And if the stairs are overused which is likely as they are essential part of transport between the floors my filming time could be interfered with. Also when I’m filming on the stairs I won’t be keeping a close watch of the wire so that could be a time when someone is likely to trip up on the wire. As is the case with the hall ways I will have to stop filming every hour as lessons finish every hour and at that time a mass of student will descend on the hall way.

I will be filming the opening of my ident in classrooms, which mostly have the same advantages and disadvantages. One disadvantage of filming in a classroom is that there is already a lot of furniture so narrows down the space you have to film in. Most of the furniture can be moved like tables and chairs however that means I have to put it back again as teachers will not like their rooms to be a mess. There isn’t too many health and safety concerns, except if a mass of people get trapped in the room which is unlikely as I will be the only crew member and I only have one cast member. Although filming in a class room does mean I have to ask the individual teachers who work in what ever department the class room belongs to if I can film in their class room, which means going into staff rooms which I don’t like too much. Although a benefit of filming in an empty room is that I won’t have people interfering with my filming and it’s also a much more relaxed and focused atmosphere as opposed to a hallway that anyone can walk in out of as they please. It also greatly reduces the chance of sound inference, which is important in the classroom scenes as I will be using diegetic sound from. Filming in a classroom may also be useful as there will be plug sockets in the room so if my camera runs out of battery I can always charge it.

Filming in the school’s broadcast studio brings all the advantages and disadvantages of filming in any other classroom however it brings some added health and safety concerns. For example there is a mass of equipment around the room such as cameras and tripods so the cast have to careful not to trip over or damage the equipment. This room is also likely to have a lot of leads running along the floor, which could also provide possible trip hazards. Also the fact there is a lot of expensive electrical equipment in the room no food or drink are allowed in the room in case it spells and damages any of the equipment which may also lead to electrocution. Filming in the broadcast studio does provide some additional advantages because it’s a room where most of the wires are stored so I don’t have to waste to getting a wire from somewhere else on the day I’m filming in the broadcast studio. It’s also a place where a lot of the school’s microphones are stored so if I need to boost the sound I’m getting from the in built microphone on the Sony A1E I can.

Filming in a science room also has some added health and safety concerns as there is a lot of potentially dangerous equipment in the room such as Bunsen burners which shouldn’t be too much of a concern as long as no one decides to play around with them. This room also has a lot of glass in it as it’s has a lot of test tubes and beakers around in the room. These like the other dangerous equipment like Bunsen burners will be kept away in cupboards and draws, however I will be getting it out to spread across the room to make the room seem more interesting and exciting. I’ve chose to film in rooms like the broad cast studio, the science room and the library as I want to make the rooms stand out from each other and I want to present Tallis as interesting exciting place full of opportunities. I will have to be careful when filming but this scene contains no stunts or any kind of action, which will require the cast or crew to run around the room or play with equipment so it should fine. Also the fact that there are plug sockets on the table means I can get varied shots of plugs being plugged in.

Filming in the school’s library provides the disadvantage of being a room in which people can just walk in and out off so we are likely to have our filming interfered with by the interruptions of people walking by which may also create additional sound interference. This room is also a hard room to get a good clear wide shot of a student plugging a wire into a plug socket as there are many things that could obstruct the audience’s view of the plug socket such as book cases and book racks. I may have to move things in order to get a good clear wide shot.

I will be filming the last shots of my on the school’s concourse which will be the only exterior shooting I do. So this is the only shot in which I have to watch the weather. I would like to film the last shot on a sunny as I think it would look better aesthetically. I also may have to bring warm clothing, as I will be filming in November and December. Also in this shot could be subject to trouble from crowd control as it’s a location that people can walk in and out of as they please. Although I don’t have to worry about sound interference as I will not be using diegetic sound in this scene. I chose this location to film the closing shots of the wires going towards the TV the very last closing wide shot of the TV as it will create an impactful image that I think will remain the audience’s consciousness after they have seen the ident which is my intention the brief was to show the school in a good light. A TV ident is all about helping to create an identity for a TV channel, which I think this location does perfectly as this is the location you can probably view most of the school from at once from a ground level. I was thinking of using the school’s entrance as background for the opening shot
