What is rolling news?

5

24/7 TV news (rolling news)

News is available to us 24/7, meaning we can access it at any time of day and at our own choice. This type of news is called rolling news.

There are many 24-hour news channels which are broadcast to many parts of the world. In the United Kingdom we can access BBC News and Sky News, but we can also access, through satellite channels and the Internet, other broadcasts such as euronews, FOX News, France Eng, Al Jazeera Eng, etc

These channels are broadcast in English and aimed at giving ‘us’ the news about other areas of the world.

24/7 TV news (rolling news)

ITV once had a 24-hour news channel; it lasted five years, but closed after the market share preferred BBC and Sky News.

However, do we need 24/7 TV news broadcast channels?

After all, we can now access the news whenever we want it, on a device of our choice, anywhere and at any time.

Is the use of Twitter a rolling news platform? 7

How many followers does the page have?

How many tweets have been broadcast?

What does the retweet feature mean for spreading the news?

Is this rolling news?

Using Twitter to report the newsGaza Conflict – July 2014

Twitter has been used as the first ‘real-time’ reporting medium. It has provided a first-hand account of images of death and destruction. There is no filter or editing of footage – it has been provided by local residents, or citizen journalists, on the ground, as well as journalists.

Citizen journalist – member of the public submitting videos or images to the news

Using Twitter to report the newsYou will be given a Twitter TV news channel name.

In pairs, note down the following:

• What is the ‘newest’ tweet? • Does this tweet have the same news story as the other

feeds?• How often is the feed updated?• Does the tweet contain regional, national or global news?• What is your audience demographic?• Who is your target audience?

Point for discussion:

Could we get rid of television news channels?
