Audiences 

When it comes to the audience of television channels it changes regarding the time of day. As an example cartoons and children's programs will be on in the morning as this is the time when most kids will be active and watching TV whereas darker and shows that involve swearing, fighting, graphic images which is not suitable for kids will be on after 9pm as this is when the 

watershed has started and kids should be in bed so they can't see the programs.

Morning: most shows that are on in the morning will be cartoons and children's shows as young kids are up early in the morning, programs such as "Good Morning" or "The Breakfast" and the News for adults who wake up early for work and want 

a quick and straight forward way to find out what is happening in the world and their local area.

Midday: programs that will be shown around midday and into the afternoon will be aimed more at the older generation and oap's as they will be retired and not at work meaning they will need entertainment throughout the day. These will usually be programs such as "Bargain Hunter" and "Cash In The Attack" as they involve antique pieces and objects from their time 

period. Some cartoons and children's shows will also be on at the time and this is for the younger children who haven't started school yet.

Evening:before 9 o'clock in the evening mainly soaps and reality shows will mainly be on as the majority of adults will want something light and easy to watch and follow along with as they will be tired from work. After 9 and the watershed has started shows that include scenes that are not appropriate for children will start and this includes; comedies, horrors 

and  dramas.

Most Popular GenreThis diagram shows that the most 

popular TV genre in England 2013 was Drama and this is because a drama 

genre show proposes a lot of suspense and mysteriousness making it 

interesting to follow along and keeping the audience interested and this makes them want to watch every 

single episode and they feel like they can't miss a second of any episode and 

this is where TV Schedules become popular as people want to check when 

they're favorite show is on so they don’t miss it. 

Soaps are also a very popular show as the people shown live very 

average lives which means the viewers can relate to the lives of the Soap stars 

creating personal relationships between the viewers and Soap stars.

Repeats And Imports

An example of a channel that includes multiple repeats is All 4 and one of their most popular shows and days for repeats is the Hollyoaks Omnibus on a Sunday.All 4 is probably the best example of a channel on British terrestrial TV as it takes 

shows from all of the channel 4 variants including: channel 4. film 4 and E4 and then replays a mix of episodes from those channels throughout the week. 

This is popular because not only does it allow viewers to catch up on their favorite shows it also enables them to watch old episodes and even box sets of their favorite shows from years ago.

E4 is one of the few  br British terrestrial channels on TV that has multiple import shows, this is something they are famous for and is a feature that gains them many viewers.Big Bang Theory is a good example of an import that is shown on E4 as it is 

an American sitcom show that is popular worldwide so being able to watch the show on a terrestrial channel means people do not have to pay for additional services to watch imports.

Target Audience Of Each Terrestrial Channel

Main terrestrial channels

BBC 3 has always had a young target audience as the shows on the channel 

are mainly of a comedy genre but it was more of an immature humor that only 

teens and young adults would find amusing. However BBC 3 has maintained this young target audience and recently they have made their channel into an 

online channel meaning it can no longer be seen on TV. This means that non of 

the older generation will view the channel as they are not as able as 

younger people when it comes to the use of internet.

When it comes to Channel 4 you could say that it doesn't have a 

specific target audience as it has the widest variety of genres on one 

channel. The channel hosts cartoons, comedies, dramas, horrors, films, 

documentaries, news and live sport, so the channel caters for every target 

audience.
