Gareth Malone Goes to Glyndebourne

Sunday,14 August 2011

Choirmaster Gareth Malone has been given the task of finding 50 teenagers from across East Sussex, to sing on the main stage of one of the world's most prestigious opera houses, Glyndebourne in the UK.

Gareth has been asked to be the chorus master of a brand new opera Knight Crew, written by composer Julian Philips, based on a novel by author Nicky Singer. It is the urban retelling of the King Arthur legend and Gareth's mission is to go deep into the local community, to find teenagers to sing in his chorus who may have never heard an opera. He wants to find teenagers with the right edge and life experience.

Over two months Gareth auditions 450 teens, whittling them down to a final 100 who must sing solo in front of a Glyndebourne panel. The final 50 chorus members are chosen, but how will they cope with the demands of learning a two‑hour opera and performing it onstage at Glyndebourne in six months' time?

Cook Yourself Thin: Farah

Monday,15 August 2011

Gizzi, Harry, Sal and Sophie are four cooks, who regularly have their cake, eat it and still manage to look good.

Armed with their skinny secrets, they're helping disillusioned dieter Farah Malik, to drop a dress size in six weeks without giving up her favourite foods.

Farah has a craving for curry, a passion for puddings and a love of all fatty foods, so can the girls come up with tasty skinny versions?

On the menu tonight is a skinny lasagne, a scrumptious seafood linguine, a low‑fat chicken tikka and a tiramisu to satisfy the sweetest tooth.

They also show us what to buy when you're suffering from a snack attack. Plus, a dietary supplement goes on trial ‑ miracle cure, or just a Big Fat Fib?

Deadwood: Tell Him Something Pretty

Monday,15 August 2011

After three near impeccable seasons Deadwood draws to a close tonight with a final episode full of intensity and intimidation.

Set in the late 1800s in a deeply corrupt mining town all the ideas that were building in the first two series come to a delightful and bloody end in this final instalment.

Tonight, voting day dawns in Deadwood.

In the empty theatre Langrishe (Brian Cox) reviews the state of tensions in the camp and whether it should prevent their debut.

Laid up with back pain George Hearst (Gerald McRaney) orders Farnum (William Sanderson) to deliver a note to Swearengen (Ian McShane). EB fears the note demands his death but Al reveals that it insists on Trixie's (Paula Malcomson).

Fed up with being in hiding, Trixie dresses to go out, swearing she's not afraid to die.

Under the guise of asking about his health, Langrishe visits Hearst to gauge his intentions over resolving tensions with Swearengen and Sheriff Bullock (Timothy Olyphant).

Hearst reveals his intention to leave Deadwood as soon as he sees the election returns and the whore who shot him dead.

Valemont

Tuesday,16 August 2011

Everybody has got dirty little secrets at Valemont University ‑ they all want to see behind the looking glass. The problem is they'll know too much to ever return to a normal life and too little to know how to survive.

Valemont may be too much for Sophie (Kristen Hager) to handle but it doesn't stop her attempts to crash the biggest house party of the year.

Although Gabriel (Tyler Hynes) warns her against going to the party Sophie reveals it's the last place she knows for sure her brother was there.

With roommate Poppy's (Nikki Blonsky) aid Sophie surreptitiously seduces Sebastian (Dillon Casey) and steals a key to the party.

But they soon discover they are not dressed for the occasion.

On the surface Valemont is like any other university but something is different, something is strange…especially with the students.

All of the students are special in some way. Some are smart, some are athletic, some are strong…and some are vampires!

The number one rule is vampires are forbidden to feed on humans ‑ but there are those that play by the rules and those that break them.

The trick is figuring out which is which.

Beauty and the Beast: The Ugly Face Of Prejudice: Jessica And Chloe

Wednesday,17 August 2011

26‑year‑old Jessica Whitfied is a stay at home mum of two young sons. Jessica was born with a haemangioma, a benign tumour that grows during infancy, on the right hand side of her face.

When she was young, before the surgeries began, the haemangioma was the size of a tennis ball. The first operation removed much of the mass but left her with a prominent scar and caused that side of her face to sag. She has since had thirteen operations, having her last procedure this summer.

Immediately prior to filming she underwent another procedure known as sclerotherapy. Jessica insists none of these operations were for vanity reasons, but because her birthmark often causes her pain, swelling and bleeding on the inside of her mouth

Chloe Page is a 22 year old model and single Mum to three year old daughter Taiyze Star. She is a self confessed beauty addict and spends around £200 on beauty treatments a month, ranging from nails to hair extensions, eyebrows to "anything new that comes on the market".

Chloe is keen to have more surgery and would like to get liposuction on her arms, legs and hips and to have a mole removed. One clinic has already told her that she isn't a suitable candidate for liposuction (because she doesn't have enough fat to warrant it), but she is determined to find a place to do the procedure

http://abc.net.au/iview/

Chloe says that the beauty regime has started taking over her life and she's concerned that her obsession will have a negative impact on Taizey, her daughter.

Ingrid Betancourt: 6 Years In The Jungle

Wednesday,17 August 2011

Ingrid Betancourt was the world's most famous hostage. On 23 February, 2002, Ingrid, a presidential candidate in Colombia's elections, was kidnapped by the left‑wing FARC rebel group along with her assistant and friend Clara Rojas. She was held for over six years in the jungle ‑ with only occasional news coming out including a shocking picture which showed her clearly on the verge of collapse, if not death, in 2007.

This is the first documentary account of what happened in the jungle in her words and of those who were there with her: Clara Rojas, her campaign manager and Marc Gonsalves, one of three Americans who were also held by FARC for many years. The film tells how Ingrid and Clara fell out, ending up virtual enemies with completely different strategies of survival. The film explores the dynamics of captivity, including remarkable interviews with both the FARC soldier who kidnapped Ingrid and Clara ‑ along with their main camp commander, who actually presided over Clara's caesarian section in the middle of the jungle. The film ends with the most daring rescue mission since Entebbe. The Colombian military sent in twelve unarmed men and women pretending to be aid workers and lured the guerrillas into believing that they were transferring them on a humanitarian mission.

Misfits

Friday,19 August 2011

With its brackish, dark British humour and believable characters, Misfits has been described by some as a cross between Heroes and Skins.

Tonight, new boy Ollie (Joshua McGuire) turns up to start his community payback after vandalising a coal-fired power station over carbon emissions.

He openly questions the Misfits about their powers and in doing so reveals that he too has a power ‑ he can teleport.

However, the rest of the group is unimpressed by his demonstration of this, as he only manages it through great effort and only gets a few feet behind them, though he claims to be capable of teleporting greater distances.

When he teleported he also left behind one of his flip‑flops, suggesting some lack of skill.

Later, when the group is out picking up litter, a deranged man (Matt Cross), who believes he is in a violent video game, shoots and kills Ollie.

Nathan (Robert Sheehan) sees Ollie's ghost and they each insult each other. Ollie's heart is donated to Nikki (Ruth Negga), the girl whom Curtis (Nathan Stewart Jarrett) met in his flash‑forward, and the owner of the flat the Misfits broke into. Due to the transplant, Nikki inherits Ollie's power.

In The Heat Of The Night

Sam Wood, a police officer in a small Mississippi town, discovers the body of a local industrialist late one evening. He arrests a black man, who is subsequently subjected to a bigoted, insolent interrogation by police chief Bill Gillespie. As it turns out, the black man is himself a policeman. His name is Virgil Tibbs, and he is a top homicide detective in Philadelphia.

Though the two men hate one another, Tibbs and Gillespie are forced to work together to solve the crime. Tibbs suspects one of the town's leading citizens, Eric Endicott, an aristocratic relic of the Old South. However, Tibbs realises that his motives in pursuing Endicott are heavily prejudiced and in the end, his investigation clears the man.

Soon thereafter, the case is dramatically broken when Dolores, a seductive teenager, is apprehended with Ralph at the home of an abortionist. Dolores' brother also arrives, along with four white youths, all gunning for Tibbs. When Tibbs declares that Ralph killed Henshaw while trying to get money for an abortion, a wild free‑for‑all breaks out. Things are eventually brought under control and the next day, Gillespie drives Tibbs to the train depot. The experience they have shared has taught them a little more respect for one another, and they shake hands.

Directed by Norman Jewison, In The Heat Of The Night stars Sidney Poitier, Rod Steiger and Warren Oates.
