Wide Open Road: Car Wars

Sunday, 30 October 2011 FinalAustralia had fallen in love with the car by the 1970s but this love provoked major conflicts in Australian society: between the inner cities and the suburbs, the drinking drivers versus the police, the local industry versus the international world, the petrol car and the future.

The 1970s was a period of great social upheaval - inner-city trendies faced off against suburban gangs, Peter Brock and Allan Moffat intensified the rivalry between Holden and Ford, and car lovers battled to stay alive on the roads because of a volatile cocktail of speed, youth and alcohol.

Drivers didn't like it when petrol rationing was introduced into Australia but there was no fear of the petrol bowsers running dry at Mt Panorama in Bathurst; the only thing the spectators were limited to was one slab of beer each day.

There was a very dark side to the car in the mid-1970s. Up to 3,500 people were being killed annually and Australia researchers were the first in the world to prove the link to alcohol consumption.

Right now the car doesn't hold such a hallowed place in society. The car industry has shrunk despite the unions and the bosses uniting against a government intent on making it more competitive. The old rivalry between Ford and Holden died with Brockie. The congestion on city roads and the price of petrol means that people feel imprisoned by their cars.

But the disinterest in hybrid electric cars proves that, deep down, we're still a nation of rev heads - despite the price of petrol!

Compass: Life's Big Questions: Lincoln Hall

Sunday, 30 October 2011

What makes a good life? Why are we here? Is there a God? Whether you believe or not, many of us search for answers…

Theologian Scott Stephens returns to Compass with a host of new guests to continue the search for meaning in a new series of the highly acclaimed Life's Big Questions Sunday nights on ABC1.

"The experience of the first series, and the unprecedented willingness of our guests to talk about big issues, deep questions, hard emotions, and what 'God' means for them, emboldened us even further in this series both to go deeper and to raise the bar on how religion and ethics are discussed in public in Australia," says Scott.

Featured in this series are Peter Cundall, Cheryl Kernot, Di Fingleton, Warwick Thornton and Margaret Fulton.

Scott asks them about their lives and beliefs, as well as the experiences, emotions and insights that have shaped and changed them.

Tonight Scott meets Mt Everest conqueror and survivor, Buddhist and writer, Lincoln Hall. Five years ago Lincoln was pronounced dead and left overnight in Everest's death zone more than eight kilometres above sea level. Lincoln's miraculous survival baffled science, but the mountain exacted a huge toll. Lincoln talks to Scott about his beliefs, life, death and miracles.

Rome Wasn't Built In A Day

Tuesday, 1 November 2011

The internal scaffolding of the Roman villa comes down and the workmen realise the sheer size of the project - none more so than plasterer Tim, who has to cover all the walls, using 90 tonnes of lime plaster.

He is given only one 'slave' to help, the ponderous labourer, Ben, and so Tim's not happy. Sparks fly between him and foreman Jim, and Tim goes 'off site' to clear his head and calm his temper.

Darren the brickie surprises himself with his skill shaping six huge sandstone circular pillars from blocks, using only hand tools.

But down at basement level, the hypocaust meant to warm the floor of the villa's bathhouse, is not performing properly.

Rome Wasn’t Built In A Day will repeat on ABC2 – Saturday, November 05 at 7:30pm

Country House Rescue: Carnfield Hall

Wednesday, 2 November 2011

This week Ruth is in Derbyshire visiting Carnfield Hall, a hotchpotch of Elizabethan, Victorian and Jacobean architecture with a 16th century great parlour and a staircase dating from 1628. James Cartland, cousin to romantic novelist Barbara, bought Carnfield Hall as a complete wreck 22 years ago and single-handedly restored the house to its former glory. Now in his 60s, and approaching retirement, James is finding the burden of care and preservation too much.

Ruth Watson thinks that the answer to Carnfield's future security lies with the estate's 90 acres of unused parkland, a perfect venue for Car Boot Fairs and outdoor events. The house is stuffed with a lifetime of treasures and collections that deserve a wider audience. With some simple curating, James's house could draw in visitors from far and wide.

Ruth urges James to sift through his formidable collection of antiques, collectables and curios, but he finds some of her advice a bitter pill to swallow. With careful handling she finally persuades him to host an open air theatrical production, which proves to be to his liking. Ruth's approach should help secure Carnfield's future, allowing godson Robin to continue the preservation and restoration of this magnificent manor.

Poh's Kitchen on the road

Wednesday, 2 November 2011

This week Poh's road trip takes her to WA's remote East Kimberley - cattle country. Poh has always dreamt of having the full-on outback cattle experience and at Home Valley Station all her dreams come true. Famed as a location used by Baz Luhrmann in Australia, Home Valley Station (250,000 hectares) is run by its traditional owners. Poh gets down and dirty by taking part in her first muster. On a horse called Mr T, Poh is quickly dubbed a 'cowgirl' by JR, the pastoral manager teaching Poh how to muster. Home Valley also trains young Aborigines in areas such as stock work, tourism and hospitality. Tara Johnson, an apprentice chef at the station kitchen, takes Poh to a croc-infested river to show her how the locals enjoy their beef. Beneath the breath-taking Cockburn range, Tara cooks sirloin steak on an open fire using local bush ingredients.

On through this incredible landscape Poh travels to Lake Kununurra where she meets Florian Johnen, a German who came to the Kimberleys as a backpacking chef and never left. Set on the edge of the lake, the restaurant where Florian works is a converted pump house and like his Beef in Potato Towers, it brings a wonderful layer of sophistication to this remote place. Perhaps Poh's greatest joy in the Kimberleys is her discovery of Boab, especially the root. She finds that it can be used in salads or cooked, and that it's even farmed. Poh's so impressed with it that she creates her own stir-fry to showcase this delicacy.

The Hamster Wheel

Wednesday, 2 November 2011

The Chaser team reaches new heights of hypocrisy with the latest spin of The Hamster Wheel, a satirical look at the week's news and how the news is made.

After weeks of being obsessed by the media's obsession with the Royal Family the team becomes obsessed with the media's obsession with Obama, and what he thinks of the Royal Family.

The Chaser's thorough cross-examination of Rupert and James Murdoch continues, as the team asks the questions that journalists are too afraid, or too smart, or too tasteful, to ask.

And once again the power of YouTube cat videos will be harnessed to explain the finer details of the carbon tax.

The Hamster Wheel - breaking news has never been so broken.

Mastercrafts: Weaving

Thursday, 3 November 2011

Monty Don enters the colourful world of the handloom weaver. Fashion designer Holly Berry, 26, ex-city business analyst Tref Davies, 35, and craft writer Momtaz Begum-Hossain, 28, head to the Sussex countryside to embark on an intensive introduction to this most complicated, but ultimately satisfying of crafts.

The Romans introduced handlooms to Britain 2000 years ago and by the 15th century, British weaving was among the most accomplished in Europe. The industrial revolution and the invention of power looms gave the cottage weaving industry a global market.

Nowadays there are fewer than 200 people in the UK making a living from hand weaving and the group's mentor, Margo Selby, is one of them. With 13 years’ experience in the Arts, she supplies internationally to top boutiques and prestigious department stores from her central London studio.

While the trainees grapple with winding warps, setting looms, threading headles and handling shuttles, Monty explores the importance of hand weaving in history, visiting Hampton Court to experience the finest examples of hand-woven tapestries in existence.

The trainees are immersed in the world of weaving, attempting to sell their woven wares to the general public. Finally, they are asked to design and weave three-metre lengths of fabric to be judged by Michelle Bowen from the Arts Council and Angela Swan from the Worshipful Company of Weavers.

The Slap: Rosie

Thursday, 3 November 2011

Rosie receives notification of the court date. Finally Harry will be punished for what he did. But her relief is short lived when she realises she is alone in her crusade. Aisha won't attend the trial as it puts her in a difficult position with her family and Anouk won't testify as she's staying out of it. Even Hector wants nothing to do with it, and is only going because he's been summonsed.

When Rosie starts to doubt herself her spirits are lifted by Shamira, a guest at the BBQ who contacts her and agrees to testify as a witness against Harry. Thrilled to have an ally Rosie tells Gary, but he hates that things have gone this far and pleads with her to let it go. Rosie refuses, she's in too deep, and Gary lashes out revealing his disdain for his wife.

The day of the court case arrives and Gary and Rosie are barely speaking. Hector gives his statement, then Rosie, and then the prosecution annihilates her. Harry's lawyer assassinates her character, revealing that Gary is an alcoholic and that Rosie suffered from post-natal depression. Her irresponsibility and questionable parenting skills become the reason things escalated that day. Harry is found guilty but with no conviction recorded as the offence is deemed so minor. Rosie is shaken to the core. She returns home and lies to Hugo, telling him Harry was punished, but the ordeal has changed everything.

Stars Alex Dimitriades, Melissa George, Jonathan LaPaglia, Lex Marinos, Sophie Lowe, Diana Glenn, Sophie Okonedo, Blake Davis, Essie Davis, Anthony Hayes.

Crownies

Thursday, 3 November 2011

Janet King (Marta Dusseldorp) and Lina Badir (Andea Demetriades) put aside their differences as they face the first day of the Max Gardiner (Nicholas Bakopoulis-Cooke) trial.

After a series of difficult witnesses, Sean Gardiner (David Franklin) gives his emotional evidence about the day Jake died, and Janet feels that she has successfully rebutted the idea that Max knew what he was doing was seriously wrong. However the defence barrister claims the Crown has no case, and to Janet's shock, the judge agrees, directing the jury to acquit.

Having recently 'come out' as a couple at work and to their friends, Lina feels under pressure from Andy (Christopher Morris) to introduce him to her family, but only her brother Tariq (Elias Joujhdar) and his girlfriend Salwa (Taihra Swaine) turn up. The next morning, Andy leaves for a major police operation and later when Lina gets word a police officer has been shot, she can't get hold of him.

Erin (Ella Scott Lynch) is dismayed when Joanne Mervich's sentence appeal results in an increase in her sentence of six years. She goes to the women's prison to see Joanne, but is shocked to discover that she has attempted suicide.

Ben (Todd Lasance) offloads a straightforward, if strange, brief to Richard (Hamish Michael) in the theft of ten thousand dollars from the wishing well at a child's petting zoo. Meanwhile, feeling guilty about sleeping with Erin, Ben tries to make up for it by being the perfect boyfriend to Julie (Chantelle Jamieson).

Doc Martin

Saturday, 5 November 2011

It's Portwenn Fun Day and the village is buzzing with excitement about this major fund raising event. PC Penhale (John Marquez) is in his element rallying the runners and whipping up support.

The event sparks culinary rivalry between Bert Large (Ian McNeice) who runs Large's restaurant with son Al (Joe Absolom) and Mark (Tim Goodman Hill), the landlord of the Crab and Lobster pub. They are both keen to take advantage of the day to boost their takings by providing food for the runners and spectators.

Louisa's mum Eleanor (Louise Jameson) arrives in Portwenn unexpectedly. Louisa is far from happy about her arrival. She hasn't seen her mother for years, so why the sudden interest?

Martin is even less pleased to see Louisa's hippyish mother, who takes over his kitchen to cook up a herbal tonic. Eleanor takes great delight in her grandson, and offers to babysit.

Martin and Louisa are puzzled to find their previously wailing baby is sound asleep, and continues to sleep through his feed times. Eleanor confesses she gave him a drop of her herbal brew to soothe him. Martin points out that the concoction has alcohol content, which explains why the baby has been sleeping so much.

Louisa asks her mother to leave. But Eleanor manages to win her round, and she relents.
