Getting planning permission to build in open countryside in the UK is almost impossible, but Helen and Chris Seymour have done exactly that.

Helen and Chris, both architects, decide to move out of London to build their own home in the middle of the Cotswolds countryside. They managed it through a little used planning law called PP7. This allows houses of exemplary architectural merit to be built in a green belt.

And this house is certainly going to be special, because Helen and Chris plan to build it underneath a collapsing ruined 300-year-old barn leaving it invisible in the landscape. This will be an extraordinary engineering challenge involving building a steel frame around the ancient barn whilst they excavate underneath. Not only that, Helen is determined the house will be the first accredited passive house in England. Built to the German Passivhaus eco standards, this home will be airtight and need no heating.

Having promised so much to the planners, Helen and Chris have to deliver one of the most challenging houses ever seen on Grand Designs. Helen and Chris's aspirations for a spartan industrial interior raise another question: will this extraordinary house ever feel like a home?

The Young Ones: The Science Of The Young OnesTuesday,12 July 2011 Final

What would happen if six celebrities in their 70's and 80's went back to 1975? Could just one week of living in the past make Liz Smith, Lionel Blair, Dickie Bird, Kenneth Kendall, Sylvia Sims and Derek Jameson physically turn back the clock; could reliving their heyday allow them to think themselves younger?

Six of the UK's beloved stars are sent back to the badly decorated time of fondue and flares to conduct an extraordinary experiment which will change how people see ageing forever. From the food to the clothes, the television shows to their day jobs, the group is immersed in the world of their heyday in order to discover the enormous power the mind has over the body, and to illustrate how people age. Presented by Mariella Frostrup and resident BBC scientist Dr Michael Mosley, this five part series provides a refreshing, uplifting take on ageing, looking at how a person's environment can shape the way that they think, and how, in turn, the way people think shapes how they feel.

This final episode explores the science behind the series and puts the idea that we have control over how we age to the test. Using members of the public, watch as Britain is put under the microscope to see how our environment, our preconceptions about old people, and how we behave ourselves can have enormous impact on how we feel about the elderly and how we age.

Lawrence Leung's Unbelievable: ManipulationWednesday,13 July 2011

The new adventures of intrepid sceptic and comic Lawrence Leung are revealed in a fascinating and fun series that investigates the unbelievable. It’s Mythbusters meets Ghostbusters as Lawrence embarks on a mind-bending quest to examine the irrational and the impossible.

With his curious not so scientific research and real-life experiments, Lawrence Leung's Unbelievable pokes fun at our own misconceptions and tests the limits of our beliefs. It's a six-part search for truth that you will have to see to believe.

This week, Lawrence presents a user's guide to how we are manipulated, persuaded and deceived without us knowing it. This episode features liars, cheats, poker players, undercover cops, and at long last reveals the truth about Joe the Cameraman.

Lawrence Leung’s Unbelievable: Manipulation will be repeated on ABC2 – Thursday, July 14 at 9pm

CrowniesThursday,14 July 2011 New Series

Delving into the extraordinary world of the Department of Public Prosecutions and its young eager lawyers, Crownies is the new 22 x 1 hour drama produced by Screentime for ABC TV.

Crownies follows five young solicitors as they face the pressures and endearing madness of modern single life - in a fast-paced workplace that highlights the moral dilemmas and big issues facing an apparently civilised society.

In a world that exists solely to see 'wrong-doers' brought to justice, and where the average age of the solicitors is 27, there is a big divide between these young solicitors and the barristers at the top. Yet they are the initial point of contact with the police, and it is they who do most of the liaising with the victims and the witnesses - and recommend what goes to court.

They are committed, idealistic and hard-working, but their lives away from the office are filled with aspirations, explorations, fragile relationships and partying.

In the feature length first episode, a top secret file is leaked after a wild Christmas party and all the young solicitors are under suspicion. Erin struggles to stay dispassionate when a disabled teenage girl is allegedly pimped for sex by her father.

Starring Todd Lasance, Andrea Demetriates, Ella Scott Lynch, Hamish Michael, Indiana Evans, Marta Dusseldorp, Jeanette Cronin, Christopher Morris, Lewis Fitz-Gerald, Peter Kowitz, Jerome Ehlers, Chantelle Jamieson and Daniel Lissing.

Silent Witness: A Guilty Mind: Part 1Friday,15 July 2011 New Series

Forensic pathologists Professor Leo Dalton (William Gaminara), Dr Harry Cunningham (Tom Ward) and Dr Nikki Alexander (Emilia Fox) return for another series of Silent Witness.

Every body tells a story: who they were, how they lived, and most importantly, how they died. Their history is there to be discovered and the body is the key to unlocking the story.

When three patients die unexpectedly on the same ward at a London hospital, Leo and Harry investigate the deaths and deduce that the patients were in fact murdered.

Suspicion falls on Professor Nigel Silverlake whose name appears in Night Sister Ying McCoy's ward notes from the night before. When Silverlake winds up dead in an apparent 'suicide by cop' incident, Nikki is pressured by his daughter Naomi to find a physical cause for the old man's breakdown. The police investigation is further hampered when Ying McCoy disappears mysteriously.

Meanwhile, Nikki is embroiled in an investigation into James Bodle, suspected of raping and killing a young girl. She's finding it a very difficult case personally, and can't seem to stop imagining the girl’s final, gruesome moments. Bodle's life was saved by Silverlake, and Nikki speculates that guilt at saving the murderer's life may have driven Silverlake to breaking point.

When Bodle is declared mentally unfit for trial, an increasingly disturbed Nikki becomes obsessed with proving an underlying reason for the professor's suicide. And just as the police enquiries seem to be getting nowhere, Ying McCoy is found; in a storeroom - hanged.

After a close brush with the law in Australia, Mickey Bricks (Adrian Lester) is back with plans to set up a new crew of grifters. In his absence the credit crunch has hit London, but there are a greedy few who are getting rich from others’ losses, and he plans to target them.

Ash has been working short cons, Stacie and Danny are in the United States, and Albert is behind bars after being caught cheating in a casino. When Mickey visits him in prison, Albert (Robert Vaughn) suggests he tries his luck with a con on a callous property developer Sara Naismith (Kelly Adams), who has made a killing in dubious deals.

Ash jumps at the chance to work with Mickey again, and sets up the sting on Sara by posing as obnoxious city gent Simon Porter Jones. Sara isn't a fool and won't be easy to take, but she's intrigued when Ash tells her he's making a fortune from insider trading. Mickey agrees to let Sara in on the trading scam promising to double her money with inside information. Sara greedily accepts Mickey's offer, but on one condition: she wants him to match the money she is investing as a way of protecting her investment. With no option to refuse, Mickey agrees.

Sara arrives the next day, accompanied by hapless assistant Aaron (Matt Di Angelo) and one million pounds in cash. Mickey and Ash also have their one million pounds, or so it seems. Eddie poses as Mickey's broker, so he can take Sara's real money away…

KingdomSaturday,16 July 2011

Kingdom and Kingdom resonates with the sound of violent sneezing. Gloria (Celia Imrie), Peter's wonderful receptionist is coming down with horrible flu and is swiftly sent home. Peter (Stephen Fry) tries his best to understand why his client Mrs Collins, a well- to-do antiques dealer, is so desperate for a divorce and finally discovers that Mr Collins has recently started cross-dressing.

Meanwhile Beatrice (Hermione Norris) steps into the breach at the empty Kingdom reception and does a surprisingly good job of manning the phones.

Debt collector Hill has returned. He watches Peter from a distance and ominously tails Peter's Alvis in a black Sedan.

Peter talks to Mr and Mrs Collins separately - she is embarrassed, hurt and determined to divorce; he, on the other hand, can't believe that she has taken it all so badly and is desperate to save his marriage. One thing remains, Mr Collins refuses to give up his new found freedom of expression, the dresses are his liberation. The question is, as Lyle points out, can he have his cake and eat it?

Hill pounces. He knows that Peter has been lying about Simon's past and the stolen identity. Most importantly Hill wants his 30K - and he wants it now. Peter manages to pay Hill with the money from the vase. Hill still has the last word and tells Peter none of his problems are over yet...

Midsomer Murders: A Tale Of Two HamletsFierce ancient rivalry between two Midsomer villages sets off three gruesome murders. The rich and powerful Smythe-Websters have dominated the two villages of Upper and Lower Warden for centuries.

Head of the family at Upper Warden manor, Rupert Smythe-Webster (Ronald Pickup) is organising an historical re-enactment involving his nephew Larry Smith (Charlie Beal), but Larry is killed in an eccentric explosion. The murder appears to be related to the recent making of a horror movie, which had been based on the villages' history. Larry's other uncle, Frank Webster (Jonathan Hyde) was producing the film and sees the death as a publicity plus and appears to Barnaby and Troy to be unaffected.

Then Frank is found dead in his gym and a local video geek provides gossip and evidence of past bitterness and affairs within both village communities, revealing a not so innocent background for many.

That includes the popular and 'much loved' Danny, a cook at the manor kitchen, who comes under Barnaby's suspicion as being too good to be true.

Jennifer Byrne Presents is a series of individual treats for lovers of books and writing. A panel of leading authors and expert celebrity guests join Jennifer for investigations into some of the most popular reading genres, they reveal the conventions, controversies, and titles that have helped shaped the literary landscape.

Jennifer Byrne presents a special on fantasy – the realm of magic, marvels, and massive sales figures. Fantasy is the world’s biggest-selling form of fiction. Oldest, too, the roots of fantasy going back to the very start of story -- from The Odyssey to Beowulf, from One Thousand and One Nights to legends of King Arthur. All essentially fantasy – though usually kept on different shelves in the bookshop.

So how did fantasy come to be segregated from its literary roots? Why is it that readers of fantasy so love this genre? And why – given the huge themes it takes on – do non-readers still tend to associate it with dragons and goblins. These are some of the questions we’ll be exploring in this special with our four fabulous guests ….

Jennifer Rowe writes crime fiction under her own name but legions of fantasy fans will probably know her by her pen name, Emily Rodda. She’s written the hugely successful Deltora Quest series, and more recently the Rondo Trilogy.

Lev Grossman is a Harvard graduate with a degree in literature, a book critic for Time Magazine. His first novel was the bestselling Codex, and his most recent is the fantasy novel, The Magicians.

Matthew Reilly is one of this country’s bestselling authors. Starting with his breakthrough novel Ice Station he has attracted an army of devoted fans, who are at this moment anxiously awaiting the next instalment of his Jack West Jr. series.

And to round out our panel of fantasy heavy hitters! Fiona McIntosh is another hugely successful fantasy author. She’s written many book cycles including the Trinity series, The Quickening, Percheron and the Valisar Trilogy.

The New InventorsHosted by James O'Loghlin, The New Inventors is getting technical as we explore the way technology turns simple things into wonderfully advanced systems. Deciding the winner of these three inventions are: futurist & author Mark Pesce, designer and inventor Sally Dominguez, and Good Game presenter Steven (Bajo) O'Donnell.

Inventions featured on the program:

!NSTRUMENTOOL MAGNETIC CALIPER - by inventor Joel Sheard from WA

Violin making is a highly specialised craft, and being able to measure the thickness of the wood is important when making or examining the instrument. However, the only tools available for measuring violins are either much too expensive or inaccurate. The only other option is to disassemble the instrument, and very few violin owners want to do that.

Joel Sheard is a young violin maker, and rather than suffer exorbitant costs or inaccuracies he made his own tool that does the same job cheaply and easily. The !nstrumenTool Magnetic Caliper is a new digital thickness gauge designed for measuring wooden plates in violin family instruments and guitars. It can measure the thickness of nearly any thin material to the nearest 0.1mm with complete accuracy.

SECUREMAT - by inventor Dean Vey from ACT

No matter how much we progress technologically as a society, we will always be plagued by the existence of people trying to steal our stuff, especially our expensive techie stuff. Alarm systems for both homes and businesses can be terribly expensive, and most of the time they get it wrong. False alarms are also a serious problem that cause police a lot of grief, with some studies estimating that between 94 and 98% of alarm calls are false.

The SecureMat is a new and innovative approach to protecting the perimeter of restricted premises and expensive equipment that needs to be stored onsite. The concept involves placing a mat on the ground inside a perimeter fence that can detect any intruder standing, walking or running across the protected area. The system incorporates fibre-optic technology with sophisticated signal analysis that dramatically reduces false alarms.

AISS – by inventors Allan Hahn from ACT and Richard Helmer from VIC

Although historically among the most popular of sports, today people are more conscious of the health implications of boxing. The scoring of boxing has also been the subject of much debate, with a panel of judges making decisions about very quick events involving large sums of prize money.

The Automatic Impact Sensing System (AISS) integrates a network of sensors on the athlete’s head, body and hands. Using a Bluetooth network, physical contacts are monitored in near real-time on a remote computer to determine legal hits. It is hoped that this system can reduce the need for full contact contests as well as provide a more reliable method of determining the outcome of a bout.

African LivestockAll across the developing world, pressures from climate change, increased population and loss of arable land mean that farmers need all the help they can get. Paul Willis goes to Kenya where farmers are rediscovering native livestock breeds, some of which have been neglected close to extinction. Traits that used to devalue indigenous cattle and sheep are now seen in a more favourable light and local farmers are reaping the benefits of reintroducing old breeds into new herds.

Prime Number KeysBillions of dollars criss-cross the internet every day and this e-commerce wouldn't be safe without some very special numbers that are divisible only by themselves and one - prime numbers. Victoria Fleeting (Catherine Kanter) died 18 months previously in a car accident, leaving her sister, Sarah, to identify the body and make the funeral arrangements. David now believes there has been a mistake and wants Victoria's body exhumed. The team decides to look into it, if only to give David some sort of closure.
