Most peoplewho've imagined winning the lotteryhave envisioned helping a favouritecharity or cause, but what about real-life philanthropists?

ABC has a show for anyone who'sever wondered how rich people decidewho's deserving of a piece of theirwealth.

Self-made multimillionaire andauthor Steve Kaplan lets cameras tagalong as he engages in a uniqueexperience in "Secret Millionaire,"airing Sunday, July 1, on ABC andCitytv. He leaves behind his privileged,posh life to find out how the other halftruly lives as he takes Chicago'sfamous L-train into a poverty-strickenneighbourhood to find a group ororganization to donate to.

Not to be confused with thecomedian of the same name, Kaplan

owns several businesses and haswritten the best-selling book "Bag theElephant: How to Win and Keep BigCustomers," among others. In "SecretMillionaire," he'll have a limited timeto make his decision, and it won't beas simple as just walking into thecommunity and throwing around hismoney.

The catch is he'll be masqueradingas a man who's down on his luckhimself. Required to subsist on theequivalent of welfare assistance,Kaplan spends a week in a communityin Chicago's south side, an area rifewith gang violence and poverty. There,he meets people who are struggling tomake a difference with such projectsas an after-school program to keepkids off the streets, a low-incomesenior citizens community, and acharity that provides everyday items tothose in need.

Kaplan intends to dole outthousands of dollars from his ownbank account to those he deemsworthy.

Helping people is nothing new tothe the best-selling author. For years,he's been helping others achievesuccess, and, in fact, has been credited

with making at least 100 othersmillionaires, in addition to inspiringcountless others to follow theirpassions.

Narrated by actor Blair Underwood,who joined the show at the beginningof this season, ABC's "Secret Million-aire" is actually based on a U.K.version that first aired on Channel 4 in2006. Across the pond, the show is stillgoing strong with 10 seasons under itsbelt. The first season of the U.S. versionactually started on Fox but moved toABC in Season 2.

The American edition of the showfollows the format of its predecessorquite closely. As in the U.K. series, thebenefactors are required to hide theirtrue identities from those in thecommunity. Locals are told thecameras are present simply to film adocumentary. At the end of the week,the wealthy participants reveal whothey really are and make sizeabledonations to those they believe aredeserving. Although "Secret Million-aire" hasn't exactly spawned the kindof worldwide phenomenon as otherU.K. imports such as "Pop Idol"("American Idol") and "Britain's GotTalent" ("America's Got Talent" and"Canada's Got Talent"), the feel-goodseries has been picked up in Australiaand Ireland, and recently it wasannounced Rogers Media may beconsidering a Canadian version of theshow.

It isn't surprising "Secret Million-aire" has struck a chord with viewers.It shines a spotlight on those whoreally want to make a difference, andKaplan is just one of the remarkable

people to sign on for the unique series.The first season of the show attractedsuch entrepreneurs as Todd Graves ofRaising Cane's Chicken Fingers, MylesKovacs of "DUB Magazine" andGregory Haerr of Century Software.Season 2 standouts included self-mademillionaires James Malinchak and JohnFerber. In the second season, Curvesfounders Gary Heavin and DianeHeavin gave away more than$400,000, the biggest "Secret Million-aire" donation to date.

This season kicked off as world-renowned artist Scott Jacobs took histeenage daughter Alexa to Newark,N.J., away from their sheltered,wealthy life in search of those needing

help. Chuck Runyon and DaveMortensen, the brains behind AnytimeFitness, have also heeded the call.

COUTURE CAREGIVERS: InBeverly Hills, reality is certainlydifferent from the rest of America. Thisaffluent neighborhood is known for itsbreathtaking views and posh designershops, as well as, of course, being theplace that Hollywood stars, profes-sional athletes and many of L.A.'s elitecitizens call home. Throw on top ofthat the fact that these upper-crustCalifornians often don't rear theirchildren alone, and Beverly Hills canbe a very unique place for kids and thecaregivers who help raise them.

Starting next week, ABC Family willgive curious viewers an inside look atlife as a nanny in the town with thefamous 90210 zip code when itlaunches a new reality series.

"Beverly Hills Nannies," whichpremieres Wednesday, July 11, followsa group of nine nannies as they workfor famous families. The docu-seriessuggests that, while their bosses mayhave the money and the power, it'sthe nannies who keep things runningsmoothly.

The group of nannies is led byKristin Lancione, who is one of the topcelebrity caregivers in the city and isstarting her own nanny-placementagency. Lancione previously workedwith a number of big names, includingLori Loughlin and Mossimo Giannulli.

She's joined by Justin Sylvester,Lucy Treadway, Amanda Averill, ScottCartmill, Shayla Quinn, Shaun Sturz,Amber Valdez and Maggie Thorne.Each of them brings varying degreesof experience to their job -- Sylvester,Treadway, Sturz and Valdez can boastof previously working for A-list stars,such as Kyle Richards, Kenny G. andNick Cassavetes. Averill is new to thecity and Thorne is new to the business,but as close friends of Lancione, theyhave a solid resource for help.

The show has also landed somebig-name families to take part in theseries, including those ofmodel/actress Cindy Margolis, formerNFL player Marshal Faulk and actressTricia Fisher, sister of "Star Wars" starCarrie Fisher, among others.

HOME BEST HOME: TLC has beenat the forefront of unique realityprogramming since it launched"Trading Spaces" in 2000, whichpointed the camera at amateur homerenovation and design projects. Thecabler upped the ante in the reality-competition genre with "Four

Weddings" by sending four couples toeach other's weddings to rate themfor the chance to win a dreamhoneymoon.

Now it seems the two concepts arebeing blended for the network'snewest venture. On Monday, July 2,TLC will premiere "Four Houses," anew property competition series thatfeatures four unique homes in eachepisode and requires their owners tocritique each other's abodes. Thehouse that earns top points has thechance to win $10,000 for its ownerand may appear in a magazine featurefor "Better Homes and Gardens."

The homes that make it onto theshow are truly one of a kind and tendto reflect the owners' unique tastes,yet all of them will have to be gradedand given a score out of 10 based onoriginality, livability and style.

The premiere episode is sure todisplay exactly how different thecompeting homeowners can be whenit comes to designing their dreamhome. The network has described Jen'shouse as a "classic Princeton manor,"while Bruce has his home on acliffside, Mishka lives in a "European

lodge" and Ricky owns a "provocative,quirky mansion in the woods." Pinningthese four homes, which seem to havenothing in common, against eachother for the first episode is atestament to TLC's desire to make thecontest a challenge, since it is alsounlikely that each of the owners willgrade their competition in the sameway.

OPRAH'S ONLINE GROWTH:Many people would agree that,considering she has her own mediaempire to run, Oprah Winfrey hasenough on her hands. Apparently,though, she still wants more.

The presidents of her cablenetwork recently announced thatOWN has partnered with "The Huffin-gton Post" to create a dedicatedsection on its website, huffington-post.com, which will launch in August.

The specialty section will be avenue for stories from the samepeople churning out content underWinfrey's umbrella, such as the writersbehind Oprah.com and producers ofOWN's original programs. It'll alsocreate an opportunity for "The Huffin-gton Post's" vast community of

bloggers to discuss Oprah.comsubjects.

"We are thrilled to partner withOprah Winfrey and OWN," saidArianna Huffington, the president andeditor-in-chief of the award-winningonline news source. "Oprah was aboutengagement and authenticity longbefore engagement and authenticityruled the web. The section will feature everythingfrom articles to blogs and interactivecontent about such things as personalgrowth, spirituality and health as away for Winfrey's fans to have even

more tools to help them live happylives as the best people they can be --an ideology that is deeply ingrained inOWN's programming and Winfrey'sonline presence.

Since launching in 2005, "Huffin-gton Post" has grown by leaps andbounds and now has local versions ofits content dedicated to variousAmerican cities as well as interna-tional arms of the media corporationin Canada and Europe. Earlier thisyear, the company was awarded thecoveted Pulitzer Prize.
