A GROUP bidding to establish basic, low cost housing to help homeless people in the community get back on their feet has received an expression of support from Tweed Shire Council.

The Rotary Club of Murwillumbah is leading the project to establish several blocks of units on a site on Tweed Valley Way just south of the Murwillumbah Railway Station where an old banana shed burned down just over a year ago.

Rotarys coordinator for the project, David Hammill, said after getting Council endorsement for the project

they will soon approach the State Government and attempt to secure a peppercorn lease for the site.

We are already in a position where we know if we can get the land we can get the fi nancing necessary to build the units, said Mr Hammill.

While we would be building the units their ongoing management would be done by North Coast Community Housing who are also ready to step in.

We have spoken to community organisations, service providers, Council and Thomas Georges offi ce and at this stage everyone is enthusiastic about it going ahead.

Mr Hammill said the plan is for the basic, unfurnished units to be rented

at a cost of $100 per week which would be deducted directly from a tenants Centrelink payments.

Separate womens and mens blocks would be built in the beginning with the opportunity to expand and add more as required.

If we can get this up and running we can use the infrastructure of Rotary to spread the idea right across the country, said Mr Hammill.

We want this idea to snowball and to be something which the community can get behind and benefi t from.

The idea is that once people have a place to live there are lots of agencies with the expertise to help who can be in regular contact and help people who are trying to fi nd a solution to their problems.

Mr Hammill said the potential development of the railway station in conjunction with the establishment of the Northern Rivers Rail Trail would not impede the project in any way as the blocks could easily be separated from the tracks by a wall.

Tweed Shire Councillor Barry Longland said they were pleased to do what they could to help at this early stage.

We know that homelessness is a big issue in our community as it is in so many others, and the letter we have provided refl ects our concern said Cr Longland.

The State Government needs to agree to allow them to use the land in question and if that can be achieved this group will be liaising with Council on a number of fronts where we can provide support.

We may even make a decision to contribute directly to the project.

A SPOKESWOMAN for the Northern NSW Local Health District has confi rmed all operations in the birthing unit at the Murwillumbah Hospital have been suspended until further notice.

Expectant mothers were told in phone calls on Tuesday night that from Wednesday morning all births would be conducted at the Tweed Hospital due to a lack of local doctors able to attend to an emergency situation.

We have been trying to recruit a new doctor since the beginning of the year but have not been able to fi ll the position, she said.

There are only two doctors available to fi ll the on call positions and that just simply isnt enough to keep the roster fi lled.

The Tweed Valley Birthing Service is continuing but mothers needing to give birth will be taken to Tweed along with their midwives, while after the birth they will be transported back to Murwillumbah.

This is a temporary situation and will only continue until a new doctor is recruited for the position.

Local mother Lana Johnson, who gave birth in the unit last year, said opposition to the move is already coming together.

If you look at the stats there hasnt been a baby require rescuscitation at Murwillumbah for more than a year, said Ms Johnson.

You can imagine the stress some of these fi rst time mums are going through being told at the last minute their plans have to change.

They say this is a temporary situation but there is no saying how long it will go on.

They are the only ones who know how diligent their recruitment is and they can just go on forever saying the position hasnt been fi lled.

A petition has been created on the Friends of Tweed Valley Service facebook page.

A TWEED farmer has played a small but important role in the establishment of a restaurant which has been named Australias best.

Gerard Buchanan from Bucks Barn in Chillingham has been supplying bush tucker and other unique produce to Sydney restaurant Sepia, named Restaurant of the Year for 2015 by the Financial Review, since last year.

I had been supplying Tetsuya in Sydney for about 15 years and it must have been someone from there who referred us, said Mr Buchanan.

I dont know how Tetsuya fi rst heard of us but they must have come through on a tasting tour as I just got a call out of nowhere one day asking if I could supply fi nger limes 12 months of the year.

Having that consistency of product and being able to supply year round has allowed us to build up relationships with a number of top restaurants including Urbane and Wazurbi in Brisbane and the Ten Restaurant on the Gold Coast.

At one time the farm supplied 50 restaurants around the country but he said they are now down to about 15 or 20.

Mr Buchanan has been working his farm, just a stones throw from the house he grew up in, for 42 years after buying it as a 19 year old.

I actually had my fi rst banana lease at 16, growing beside land my father leased on Hopkins Creek, said Mr Buchanan.

When this block was available I jumped at the chance to take it over, as it was somewhere that was a big part of my childhood growing up.

Displaying a sense of innovation from those early days Mr Buchanan made the decision to plant lady fi nger bananas on his new farm, a variety ridiculed by his fellow farmers at the time but which has

since become the main banana grown on the North Coast.

Basically I looked around and saw we couldnt compete against the new plantations up in North Queensland and I had to do something different to set us apart, he said.

Then in around the mid 1990s I changed the focus again, shifting to bush tucker and other more exotic species.

I always have enjoyed new challenges and proving people wrong who said Id fail.

Along with hard work and innovation he said one of the main factors in his success comes down to the luck of nature.

We have a variety of fi nger lime here, which I remember picking when this was a dairy farm and Id come up here as a boy, that is just naturally native to this farm, said Mr Buchanan.

Unlike other fi nger limes they are seedless, have a long shelf life and grow 12 months of the year which makes them very valuable from the standpoint of suppliers.

I wont sell trees or cuttings and I dont know that they grow anywhere else, its just total luck they are here at all and I mean to keep it that way.

We dont use any chemicals either which is another important factor some of these top restaurants are looking for.

It all comes down to the soil and knowing from experience how to get the most of your plants.

Still on the hunt for new products Mr Buchanan has recently developed a line of lotions, shampoos and hand creams incorporating bush limes and other produce grown at the farm, all of which are available at their roadside shop.

THE TWEED Regional Gallery and Margaret Olley Art Centre has beaten off competition from some of the countrys top museums and galleries to win a major national design award.

The Gallery was presented with a Museums and Galleries National Award (MAGNA) in the Permanent Exhibition or Gallery Fitout category at an awards ceremony at Sydney's Town Hall.

Other fi nalists in this category included the Australian War Memorial, Royal Australian Mint, Shrine of Remembrance, the Australian Botanic Garden, Western Australian Museum and the Aviation Heritage Museum.

The award was accepted by Tweed Regional Gallery Director, Susi Muddiman OAM and Tweed Shire Council General Manager, Troy Green.

"The project was a culmination of great teamwork and the community working together and we certainly couldn't have done without the commitment of Council and the resources of our support organisations - the Tweed Regional Gallery Foundation and the Friends of the Gallery - and the work of the dedicated staff team," said Ms Muddiman.

"The initial gift from the Margaret Olley Art Trust was the catalyst of a period of commitment which saw the Gallery rise to new levels.

"The Gallery is part of a commitment from Tweed Shire Council to cultural facilities in the Tweed, which also includes the stunning new Tweed Regional Museum in Murwillumbah."

Mr Green, said he was humbled to accept the award on behalf of the Tweed

community, especially given the high calibre of the other fi nalists.

"The award is testimony to the world class gallery that we have in the Tweed - something that every resident in the Tweed should be extremely proud of and have on their to-do list when friends and family are visiting," said Mr Green.

Tweed Mayor Gary Bagnall said all the Tweed could be proud of this great achievement.

"Last week I called Tweed the regional capital, today we have become a national leader, said Mayor Bagnall.

Congratulations to all those who have throughout the years contributed to making our gallery a winner.

The $4.5 million Margaret Olley Art Centre (MOAC) at the Tweed Regional Gallery celebrates the career, life and legacy of

Margaret Olley AO (1923-2011), arguably Australia's most celebrated painter of still life and interiors.

The purpose-built extension to the Gallery, honours the wish of the late artist that her artist's studio elements of her Paddington home in Sydney and her collections be re-created at Tweed Regional Gallery.

The MAGNAs recognise excellent work nationally in the categories of exhibition, public programs and sustainability projects. The awards are open to all Australian cultural collecting institutions who are members of Museums Australia.

The panel of judges was selected from staff at the National Museum of Australia and the National Gallery of Australia and a member of the museum-going public.
