NEW ASIA PACIFIC OFFICE BRINGS ROBBINS DOWN UNDER

A new Robbins office, opened in

the last quarter of 2012, is

providing coverage for Australia,

New Guinea, New Zealand, and

Indonesia. The subsidiary, Robbins

Asia Pacific Pty Ltd., joins a second

Asia Pacific office based in Hong

Kong. “Australia is a market with a

lot of potential, not only in the civil

sector but also in the mining sector,

particularly for coal and precious

metals.” said Doug Harding, Robbins

Vice President-Sales.

The office is based in Brisbane and

headed by General Manager Martin

Rauer, who has over 13 years of

experience in the tunnelling industry

in b o th manu fac tur ing and

contracting firms. While sales is the

main function of the subsidiary, field service, project management, spare parts services, and other

types of support will be added as market share increases. “Customers will benefit from faster

response times and more extensive local assistance and communication.” said Harding.

The office will also provide regional support for two new Robbins projects in Australia, both for

use in mine development tunnels. Later in 2013, an 8.0 m (26.2 ft) diameter hybrid EPB will be

launched on the Grosvenor Decline Tunnel at the Anglo-American Coal Mine. The 1.0 km (0.6

mile) tunnel, at a grade of 1:6, will require an explosion proof machine design for excavation in

mixed ground with possible pockets of methane gas. In early 2014, a 5.83 m (19.1 ft) diameter

Robbins Main Beam TBM will excavate the Carrapateena Decline tunnel for the Oz Minerals

copper and gold mine in southern Australia. Within the next five years, the subsidiary aims to fur-

ther mine development using TBMs, and to increase sales for both hard rock and EPB machines.

mining, has been nominated for this

year’s bauma Innovation Award. A jury

of experts picked the MTM as one of the

three best contributions from among 156

entries in the ‘Machinery’ category. The

nomination was announced officially at

the bauma Media Dialogue event, which

was held in Munich, Germany end of

January. The winners will be announced

officially and handed their awards in

Munich on 14 April 2013.

The innovative Mobile Tunnel Miner

AKKERMAN INTRODUCES THE ELIMINATOR GBM TOOL

A manufacturer and customer

collaboration between the City

of Edmonton and Akkerman in the

autumn of 2012, proved to be

mutually advantageous. At that

time, Akkerman put its new GBM

system tooling, the Eliminator

through the paces of real world

testing in Edmonton, Alberta,

Canada. With the Eliminator and the

assistance of Akkerman’s crew of

accomplished technicians they

successfully completed two 76.2 m

(250 ft) long drives of 686 mm (27)

in i.d. ‘No-Dig’ clay pipe through

non-displaceable clay and clay

stone.

The Eliminator is a new 406 mm

(16 in) diameter boring head

designed to work with the standard

GBM family of Akkerman tools that

has been in service since 2001. Named the Eliminator, the cutter head excavates as the lead tooling

in soils that are considered too hard for Akkerman pilot tube penetration, therefore eliminating the

use of pilot tubes.

The Eliminator is optically guided using typical GBM guidance system components and a target

which can be viewed through the string of hollow stem augers. The hollow stem augers are used to

drive the cutter bit and transport cuttings back to the launch shaft.

Several cutter face bit configurations are available and can be tailored for specific ground

conditions.

While mining, steering changes are negotiated using three independently controlled, hydraulic

shoes. The head is equipped with high pressure jetting nozzles to supply lubrication to the cutter

face bit during operation. Once launched, the Eliminator has the ability to be retrieved by pulling it

back to the launch shaft. This functionality is extremely beneficial in the event that that there is a

change in ground conditions so the operator can make a cutter bit change.

A member of the Akkerman sales team was informed of a project by customer, the City of

Edmonton, where pipe installations were required in non-displaceable clay and clay stone.

Akkerman and the City of Edmonton viewed this project as an ideal prospect for the Eliminator and

soon organised the logistics. Using the Eliminator would prove to be a time saving alternative

method for this gravity flow sewer alignment, which was designed as a ring-beam and lagging hand-

minded tunnel with a carrier pipe followed by grout fill. The alignment had to maintain an accuracy

of at least 51 mm (2 in) for gravity flow.

The contractor, The City of Edmonton, designs, constructs and maintains all of its sanitary and

storm water services through its Drainage Services Branch. The contractor began providing pilot

tube microtunnelling services in 2008, with the addition of an Akkerman Guided Boring Machine

(GBM) 4812 jacking system.

An Akkerman technician and engineer arrived on site to assess the project and meet the eight-man

crew. They worked inside a 4.3 m (14 ft ) diameter shaft at a depth of 14 m (46 ft). The customer’s

4812A jacking frame, powered by a P275 diesel power unit were used to propel the Eliminator

through the ground connected to the 400 mm (16 in) diameter 1 m long casings and hollow stemmed

augers. The installation was a two-pass method.

The first pass, consisting of the Eliminator attached to the casings and hollow stemmed augers

represented a mere three-day production time. The second pass, made with the 724 mm (28.5 in)

Powered Cutter Head (PCH) fitted with an increase kit and the final product pipe, was completed in

seven days. The tooling was recovered from a 3 m (10-foot) diameter reception shaft. The second

drive produced a similar production rates.

After two successful drives, the City of Edmonton purchased the Eliminator and accompanying

tooling, adding to the versatility of its GBM system package for future opportunities.

For four decades, Akkerman has manufactured distinctive microtunnelling, pipe jacking,

tunnelling and guided boring equipment. Website: www.akkerman.com

ROBBINS SLURRY TBM EMERGES FROM BELOW ZHANJIANG BAY After advancing up to 392 m (1,290 ft) per month,

Robbins’ speedy Slurry TBM made a photo finish in

China’s southernmost city. The 6.26 m (20.5 ft) diameter

machine broke through at the end of 2012, and the

pipeline is scheduled to become operational in March

2013. The Zhanjiang Bay Sub-Sea Tunnel runs 56 m

(185 ft) below water level, and will provide fresh water

to the Guangdong Steel Plant via twin pipelines.

The 2.7 km (1.6 mi) long conduit, constructed by

contractor Guangdong No. 2 Hydropower Engineering

Co., Ltd, required the use of a Robbins Slurry machine to

excavate under 6 bar of water pressure in Zhanjiang Bay.

The TBM, supplied and assembled by Robbins with key

components and engineering from Mitsubishi Heavy

Industries Mechatronics Systems, Ltd. (MHI-MS), was

launched in September 2011. “The cutterhead design,

layout of the cutters and injection ports were the most

important design factors in completing this tunnel

project.” said Qinghua Shi, Chief Project Engineer for

the contractor.

The high-powered Robbins machine featured a smooth

flow cutterhead to allow for easier removal of stones and

boulders while avoiding clogging at the face. The mixed

ground machine utilised interchangeable knife-edge bits

that could be switched out for disc cutters in geology that

included abrasive sand, gravel, and silt. The ‘smooth flow’ design approach for mixed face

conditions is consistent with the Robbins design for mixed face EPB-type machines.

During tunnelling, the Robbins TBM excavated up to 27 m (89 ft) per day, with no interventions

needed. “Throughout the project, I felt there were no significant problems that happened on the

machine. I am happy that we could operate the machine properly. There were no cutters that needed

to be changed, even though this was a long tunnel excavation project. The launch and breakthrough

also went very smoothly.” said Shi.

Once in operation, the Zhanjiang Bay Sub-Sea Tunnel will source water from the nearby Jianjiang

River to the steel plant on Dong Hai Island. The water supply for the large company of 20,000

employees is part of a plan by the Chinese government to improve the quality and output of steel in

Guangdong Province. Website: www.robbinstbm.com

PIPE EXPRESS® NOMINATED FOR BAUMA INNOVATION AWARD

W ith Pipe Express® Herrenknecht AG has developed a new semi-trenchless method for

installing pipelines. In comparison with the open construction method, routes are

considerably narrower, no groundwater lowering is necessary and there is less impact on nature.

This has a very positive effect on the grid operators’ construction costs. Because of the especially

ecological and cost-efficient working method, the development of this new system has been

subsidised by the German Environment Ministry. An expert jury has recently nominated Pipe

Express® for the bauma

Innovation Award 2013.

Pipe Express® is a new

60 in) using the ‘half-open’

construction method. A tunnel

boring machine loosens the soil

which is then directly conveyed

aboveground using a milling unit

which is carried along with the

process. At the same time, the

pipeline is installed underground.

Since earthwork is reduced to a

minimum and no groundwater

lowering along the route is

necessary, Pipe Express® has very

little impact on the environment.

This method is believed to be

unique. For the installation of

pipelines with a diameter of up to

1,500 mm, the soil is directly removed and not pushed aside. Pipe Express® is well-suited, for

example, for projects in which the groundwater level is only a few centimetres below surface, in

mainly swampy terrain or when nature protection is of special importance.

MINIMUM MANPOWER - HIGH SAFETY

The main components of the new installation system include a tunnel boring machine that works

underground, a trenching unit with a buggy and an operating vehicle on surface. The modular design

of the entire system allows easy transport and relocation, as well as high flexibility to changing

project conditions. The compact system is remote controlled from the operating vehicle and no

trenches have to be dug. This means that minimum manpower is needed, increasing work safety at

the same time.

The new method has a positive influence on the realisation and re-naturalisation costs of projects

taking place in particularly challenging areas with unstable ground, water-bearing layers and at great

installation depths. Compared to the conventional open cut construction method, with Pipe

Express® the route width can be reduced by up to 70%, thereby reducing the necessary earthwork.

When crossing agricultural land, major losses of harvest and therefore long-term compensation

payments can be prevented compared to the open cut methods.

ENVIRONMENTALLY-FRIENDLY

By using Pipe Express®, the influence of the construction activities on the surrounding environment

can be reduced to a minimum. Acceptance by the population, land users and land owners is

improved due to the reduced usage of large equipment and shorter construction periods. The natural

soil structure is only disturbed to a minimum, making subsequent re-cultivation easier. No complex

groundwater lowering is required along the route and water-saturated soil layers are prevented from

drying out. In addition, as the pipeline is installed fast and in one work step and fewer conventional

construction machines are needed, emissions of exhaust gases and noise can be considerably

decreased.

After Herrenknecht AG had initially carried out test drillings on the company site at the Schwanau

headquarters over a one year period, the new machine technology could be applied in its first

reference project in Sevenum, The Netherlands at the end of 2012.

“Pipe Express® has exceeded all

expectations.” noted project manager

Andreas Diedrich with satisfaction. He

continued saying: “The machine works

with a tunnelling speed of up to 1 m/

min, which means that 500 ms of

pipeline were installed in three days.”

RAMMING HAMMERS FOR SUPPORTING HDD SET UP

U Mole (a division of Vp plc) not only offers a range of trenchless technology equipment for the

direct installation of new pipe line in the form of its range of US-designed and manufactured

HammerHead impact and ramming hammers, it also offers the ability to aid other trenchless systems

achieve greater production rates through difficult ground conditions. One such technique is

Horizontal Directional Drilling (commonly known as HDD).

HDD has been around as a technique for several decades now and has become established as a

significant and widely used technique in the area of new installations of pipeline, particularly for

crossing works under roads, rail tracks and other significant obstacles/buildings where open trench

operations would be difficult if not impossible.

However, on many occasions one of the most difficult aspects of an HDD project is setting up the

drilling machine in less than favourable ground conditions, such as sand, gravel and similar ground

conditions where the ground may have the propensity to ‘run’ if not correctly controlled. As these

ground conditions are often found near the start point of a bore it can make launching the pilot drill

head and drill string correctly into the ground at the required angle of attack difficult. This can

caused significant problems in trying to establish the required bore path early in the pilot bore and

may even cause misalignment of the bore that would require potentially time consuming and

expensive remedial work to correct once started.

One method that has been developed to help overcome this set of circumstances is the use of the

Hammerhead pipe ramming hammers to install a washover pipe through the less competent ground

near surface to enable the drill string to reach a solid ground horizon effectively.

WASHOVER PIPE INSTALLTION

To achieve the washover pipe installation, depending on the length and depth to which the pipe

needs to reach, a length of steel pipe is set up at the launch point of the HDD bore on the line of the

bore and at the inclination required for the start of the HDD pilot run. A HammerHead ramming

hammer is then used to push the steel pipe into the ground. If the length of the washover pipe is

greater than that of the first length of steel pipe, additional lengths can be welded onto the lead pipe

as required.

The lead end of the steel pipe may be fitted with a cutting shoe to help maintain the advance of

during the ramming process but also help maintain the desired direction of the ram. It may also

assist in engaging the lead end of the washover pipe into the competent ground that it is intended to

reach, minimising ground loss at the washover pipe competent horizon interface.

A pre-project site investigation will have determined the length and depth the rammed washover

pipe will needed to reach to ensure the pilot drill head cuts into more competent ground and so

establish the correct start for the pilot bore.

Once the washover pipe has been installed, spoil inside it can be removed if required. The pilot

drill head and drill string is then launched from the drilling rig directly into the competent ground

without having to negotiate the potential interference of the loose ground through which the

washover pipe has been rammed.

It is usual that the washover pipe would be of a dimension that would allow the final installed pipe

being pulled in by the drilling rig to pass through it to surface so as not to interfere with the final

pipe installation.

Depending on the project requirements, in some instances the washover pipe may be extracted

once the final product pipe has been installed using the HDD rig. This may allow a sub-surface

connection to another section of the product pipeline to be made. But this is not always the case and

the washover pipe may be retained in position as an added protection or casing for the product pipe

as it approaches the surface.

Frank Gowdy, Sale Director for U Mole said of the technique: “We have provided some of our

HammerHead ramming hammers to clients for just this type of operation because the units are easy

ti handle, powerful and cost-effective in what is often a limited access area on many HDD projects.

The advantages that installing a washover pipe can bring to the start of an HDD pilot bore more

often than out weigh any additional costs that this initial set up work may add to the project given

the potentially huge costs of rescuing a bore that has failed in unstable ground before it really

begun.”

INSITUFORM LINES THE IMPOSSIBLE

I nsituform Technologies Ltd

(ITL) recently completed a

high profile and challenging

project to rehabilitate the

inverted-siphon sewers which

run directly under Douglas

Harbour on the Isle of Man.

The combined sewers transfer

sewage from the South Quay

catchment to the sewer

network on the North Quay of

the harbour and so are in a

very public location. The

client, the Isle of Man Water

and Sewage Authority (WSA)

was conscious of the need to

protect the sewage transfer

network beneath Douglas

Harbour, providing a fifty year

design life.

Inverted siphons are notori-

ously difficult to rehabilitate and this project brought with it a number of distinct challenges which

needed to be overcome. The two inverted-siphon sewers, classed as ‘Critical Infrastructure,’ were

constructed under the harbour over one hundred years ago. However, whilst Siphon A had continued

to operate, Siphon B had been disused for some years, both sewers were heavily silted and

encrusted. This created a high risk of the system blocking, which would have resulted in the

discharge of raw sewage into the impounded inner harbour marina, creating huge environmental

issues for both the harbour and the surrounding area. Insituform has an excellent long standing

working relationship with the WSA, so ITL was tasked with providing a solution that was both

technically effective and cost efficient.

PREPARING FOR REHABILITATION

In the summer of 2012 an underwater sonar profile of both pipe lines was conducted to determine

the pipe condition, diameter, length, the location of the bends, and the extent of the cleaning that

would be required. Following the survey work, ITL conducted a programme of extensive cleaning in

both sewers. This took longer than originally anticipated due to the heavy encrustation within the

aging cast iron mains and the tight bends in both pipeline configurations.

Following cleaning works it was determined that Syphon B could be rehabilitated to nearly its

original diameter of 290 mm, allowing for the liner thickness. Due to the encrustation in Syphon A

and lack of access it was considered that the sewer could be lined to a maximum of 150 mm

diameter. However, the reduced diameter and lined pipe bore would assist with achieving

self-cleansing velocities in dry-weather flow.

LINER DESIGN AND

INSTALLATION

Once cleaning was complete, ITL

was able to perform a technical

condition assessment of both

sewers and determined the most

rehabilitation. After careful

consideration by the Client’s

Project Team including the

experienced technical team at ITL,

it was decided that bespoke liners would be

manufactured for each of the pipes.

Insituform has a qualified, well

established manufacturing team located in

Wellingborough, Northamptonshire who

were tasked with the liner construction.

The manufacturing team fabricated the

liners using a specially-commissioned 2

mm thick polyurethane pre-liner, which

would facilitate the final installation. Once

manufactured, the liners were shipped dry

to the Isle of Man along with the necessary

resins for the wet out process. The liners

were then impregnated by the experienced

lining crew residing on the island. Both

liners were installed using a steam cure

process. This has the significant advantage

of offering a smaller site footprint and was

most appropriate for the conditions encountered on the Isle of Man site.

The lining operation of both siphons was high risk as a full camera survey prior to installation was

not viable. However, the skills, expertise and perseverance of an experienced liner crew resulted in a

successful installation of both liners on what was a very demanding and challenging site.

NO REAL ALTERNATIVE

The other options would have involved replacement of the sewers. Like-for like replacement would

require excavation of a trench at the rear of the impounded harbour using a jack-up barge and long

reach excavator supported by a team of divers to fully replace the existing pipelines under water.

The presence of the existing utility infrastructure including a large diameter old gas main in North

Quay would have created increased inherent risk and substantial cost implications. It would have

also resulted in deep excavation within the North Quay conservation area.

SUCCESS!

The rehabilitation of the pipelines was hugely successful for two key reasons:

The rehabilitation process took a total of only two days, causing minimal disruption to

harbour users, the travelling public and local businesses.

The total cost of re-lining to the IOM authority was just £150,000! In comparison, the

alternative excavation of the harbour bed carried an estimated cost of £900,000.

In summary, the carefully planned and professionally executed lining solution presented by ITL

was a major success for all involved. The experience and expertise of the Client’s Project Team

including the entire team at Insituform and the company’s full range of trenchless (No-Dig) sewer

rehabilitation techniques enabled the Company to provide a very cost effective solution in extremely

difficult conditions.

John Beech, Business Development manager for ITL went on to say “This rehabilitation project

proved a major challenge in terms of the level of deterioration, degree of encrustation encountered

and the complexities of the pipes to be

lined. In addition there was the added

pressure of the site being in a very

sensitive and prominent position in the

islands capital. However, after careful

deliberation with the client, selection

of the appropriate materials and the

correct lining methodology combined

with the deployment of a very

experienced lining crew, the work was

completed successfully and to the full

satisfaction of the client.” Website:

HDD DRILL RIGS FOR VENTING COAL STRATA IN AUSTRALIA

P RIME DRILLING of Wenden near Olpe,

Germany was founded in 1999 and

specialises in the design and construction of

fluid-assisted, horizontal directional drill

(HDD) rigs with up to 6,000 kN pulling force.

Benefitting from the experience of its 80

highly qualified employees, PRIME

DRILLING offers technical drilling expertise,

high production quality and high levels of

service. More than 150 fluid-assisted, PRIME

DRILLING-manufactured HDD rigs are

currently being operated around the globe.

The enterprise owes its success primarily to

two abilities: listening to customers’ often

technically challenging needs and responding by designing machines which live up to these

demands. Recently PRIME DRILLING was able to prove its expertise once more, this time outside

of its usual industry sector.

At present, it looks like mankind will continue to depend on the exploitation of fossil energy

sources for quite a while yet. New raw material deposits are constantly being tapped all over the

world including, mineral oil, gas and coal. Australia is ‘blessed’ with resources and it is one of the

leading mining countries in the world. Some 10 % of all coal resources can be found in Australia.

Therefore, it comes as no surprise that coal mining industry in Australia is a crucial factor in the

economy of the country. In the fiscal year 2008/2009, 487 million tons of coal was mined, with

about 261 million tons being exported. In New South Wales and Queensland, great deposits of high-

quality bituminous coal lay close to the surface where they shall be exploited by open pit surface

mining. When exploiting these coal deposits, coalbed gas, a gas based on methane, accumulates. In

Europe this gas is known as mine gas, its composition is very similar to petroleum gas. Coalbed gas

is generated when organic material in the coal deposits is degraded. Formerly it was simply flared

and not made use of at all, but in the past ten years it was increasingly used for generating

electricity. First the water must be pumped out of the coal bed before the gas can be retrieved or

‘won’. This action lowers the pressure and the gas can be extracted.

As a rule this gas is mined by drilling vertically into the coal bed. In this case the vertical bores

had to reach 350 m into the coal bed to be connected to horizontal bore holes coming from the coal

bed cover. Such a line system virtually allows complete ‘outgasing’ of the deposit. On the one hand

the aim is to utilise the coalbed gas for producing electricity, on the other hand the gas content in the

coal deposit can be reduced sufficiently to mine the coal safely. The time it takes for outgasing is

variable and depends on the size of the deposit. A gas exploitation programme exceeding two years

is planned for the current deposit.

The horizontal drilling operations are a major challenge and demand expert skills. So Ralf Kiesow,

head of the PRIME DRILLING sales and service department, was surprised to receive a phone call

from Australia and the invitation to take part in a conversation. Ralf had been in contact with the

operator of the deposit for quite a while. The preliminary talks proved to be worthwhile, with

PRIME DRILLING the customer was convinced it had found the perfect partner. With the special

requirements of the customer known land ‘target specifications’ comprising 30 pages, Ralf flew

back home. “After our engineering team had checked the customer requirements and strict safety

compliance and found both technically feasible, we received the go-ahead in December 2011 for the

order of two drill rigs. We developed a special version, based on the existing drill rig type PD

100/80 RPC 45 with a maximum pulling and pushing forces of 100 tons.” Ralf explained.

Details which had to be considered for the design included: A penetration angle of 6o to 45o was

required; A minimal drill speed of 25 mm/minute had to be achieved; A clamp and break-away

facility with a clamp range of 105 mm to 405 mm was to be integrated; A self-centring pipe

handling system without the need for readjusting the drill stems and casing pipes was also one of the

specifications; and An explosion-protected work area in a radius of 3 m around the drill shaft was

also demanded

All welded supporting structures were exposed to non-destructive material tests and the results

were recorded. The drilling mast for two different drill stem lengths is 18 m long.

The strict Australian safety demands were even beaten by the Prime Drilling team in some of the

options concerning safety. For instance a special parking brake with spring accumulator was

developed to prevent slipping-down of the top

drive, which weighed several tons, even in the

event of a total failure.

In the summer of 2012, the two drill rigs were

shipped from Hamburg. The sea passage to

Brisbane took all of 45 days. Since that time, the

drill rigs have been in action. They perform

drilling operations called horizontal blind bore

holes with diameters of 89 mm (3½ in), a drill

length up to 1,800 m and a drill depth up to 350 m.

The previously established vertical bore holes have

to be connected with the horizontal bore holes,

therefore they are equipped with reference

transmitters to allow the horizontal drill rig to pick

up the signals and bore towards them. In order to

reach a vertical bore hole at a depth of 200 m, the cut-in must be less than 45° over a distance some

200 m away from the vertical hole. As soon as the installation depth in the cover layer of the coal

strata is reached, the drill moves forward from one vertical bore hole to the next until it arrives at the

target. Then a casing pipe is pushed in up to the bore head. Finally the drill stems with the bore head

are recovered under the protection of the casing pipe. Filter pipes are then driven into the empty

casing pipes. This is carried out with special rollers which are mounted to the first pipe and driven

by means of hydraulics. The drilling process is completed as soon as the casing pipes are pulled out.

At first, the slotted filter pipes take up the water and transport it to the vertical bore holes where it

can be pumped out. After draining the water, the pipes are used for the outgassing operation. The

captured gas is then conveyed to the point of power generation. Ralf Kiesow said: “If everything

works out as it should, the complete drilling process will take 1½ weeks at a drilling length of 1,800

m drilling around the clock without interrupting work.” This project has opened up an interesting

application and the job was executed without problems to the full satisfaction of the mine operator.

NEWS UKSTT supports the Underground Mapping Association (UMA)

Last December Peter Crouch (UKSTT Technical Secretary) and Colin Tickle (UKSTT Past Chairman)

attended the UMA dissemination seminar at Ordinance Survey Headquarters at Southampton. They

were able to promote the role of the Society during breakout sessions and the quality of conference

papers, covering many hot topics and current aspects of underground service detection and mapping,

was excellent.

The concept and main aim of UMA is to establish best practice and training for utility detection and

mapping services for the UK construction industry. Launched in September 2011 the new organisation

was formed out of a need to ‘get to grips’ with officially specifying how construction industry

professionals should use utility detection services and mapping across the UK. It is a multi-agency

not-for-profit organisation, which aims to promote best practice for companies across the industry by initiating a nationally

accredited scheme on utility detection and mapping.

Jo Parker, chair of the UMA, said that: “Through standards and regulations the UMA is determined to see utility detection and

mapping firmly established as a highly respected and professionalised service. It is a valued technique that helps reduce

construction costs and avoid accidents when working around buried assets. We recognise that in order to achieve this one of the

first things we have to do is work with key stakeholders to inform and assist in the production and maintenance of a common set

of standards which will promote clear, measurable and accredited competence levels for the industry.”

UMA is being represented on the steering group of the proposed Publically Available Specification (PAS) 128, which is

sponsored by the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE). It is anticipated that PAS 128 will be ready for publication by autumn

2013. A copy of the presentation and final brochure is available from UKSTT office.

Kent starts lane rental scheme

Utility companies in Kent will be charged up to £2000 per day for digging at peak times following an

announcement by Government on 22 January. Starting on 29 May 2013 companies will now be charged

on any of the 465 roads covered by the scheme with money raised invested into cutting congestion. Press

Severn Trent – Live Demo of AMEX-10 Seal Fitting

PMP was invited to carry out a live demo of its AMEX-10 pipeline repair system at Severn

attendees.

verified life expectancy of more than 50 years and work on a policy of ‘no seal no pay’.

PMP has a 5 year Framework contract with United Utilities for the supply and installation of the AMEX-10 seal. Visit
