WelcomeWELCOME TO THE 12TH DESIGN SCIENCE RESEARCH IN INFORMATION SYSTEMS AND TECHNOLOGY CONFERENCE (DESRIST)

Dear participants,

the 12th DESRIST conference with the theme “Designing the Digital Transformation” continues the tradition of advancing and broadening design research within the information systems discipline. DESRIST brings together researchers and practitioners engaged in all aspects of Design Science research, with a special emphasis on nurturing the symbiotic relationship between Design Science researchers and practitioners.

In total, we received 135 submissions (66 full research papers, 19 prototypes and products, and 50 research-in-progress papers) to the conference for review. Each research paper was reviewed by a minimum of two referees. Overall, 25 full research papers with an acceptance rate of 38% together with 11 short papers describing prototypes and products and 21 research-in-progress papers were accepted. Twelve doctoral students presented their work as part of the Doctoral Consortium. In addition, within two panel sessions contemporary topics in Design Science Research have been discussed.

We would like to thank all engaged participants and researchers who submitted their papers to the DESRIST 2017 conference. Furthermore, we thank all members of the Program Committee as well as the many additional referees who took the time to provide detailed and constructive reviews for the authors. We appreciate the efforts of all members of the Organizing Committee, as well as the volunteers whose dedication and effort helped bring about another successful DESRIST conference. Furthermore, we thank the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) as well as sponsoring organizations, in particular SAP, Bosch, IBM, senacor, Landesbank Baden-Württemberg, Springer and the Cyberforum / Digital Innovation Center for their support.

General informationConference locationsThe ZKM | Center for Art and Media has become a cultural institution unique throughout the world. It is a house for all media and genre, a house for both spatial arts, such as painting, photography, and sculpture as well as time-based arts, such as film, video, media art, music, dance, theater, and performance. ZKM was founded as a museum in 1989 with the mission to perpetuate classical arts in the digital age, which is why it is occasionally referred to as „Electronic or Digital Art Bauhaus,“ an expression that can be traced back to Heinrich Klotz. Beyond that, ZKM houses institutes and laboratories that carry out scientific research, development, and production. Alongside the classic guiding principle of a museum, namely, to save artworks from disappearing, ZKM has also taken on the task of creating conditions under which works of art arise; for one, by way of guest artists, and for another, by way of the staff members. For this reason, it is called a center and not a museum.

Karlsruhe University of Arts and Design (German: Hochschule für Gestalltung) was inaugurated on April 15, 1992. It was founded by Professor Dr. Heinrich Klotz between the years 1989 to 1992 together with ZKM | Center for Art and Media in Karlsruhe. This unique combination of teaching-, research-, and exhibition-institutions takes into account the new artistic and pedagogic task of bringing traditional arts together with media technology and electronic production processes.A unique combination of artistic, design and theoretical subjects makes studying at Karlsruhe University of Arts and Design especially varied and exciting for professional careers in the future. With communication design, product design, media art, exhibition design, and scenography, as well as art research, media theory, and media philosophy, the university presents itself as an art school of a particular type that has increasingly developed since the early 1990s in Europe, the United States, and Japan.

ProceedingsThis year’s conference papers are published in two proceedings. The full research paper as well as the product and prototype paper are published in the Springer Lecture Notes in Computer Science (LNCS) proceedings. Research in progress paper are published in the KIT Scientific Working Papers (SWP) series. Both proceedings are available online:

DESIGNING BOLD OUTCOMES FOR A DIGITAL WORLD

Phil GilbertGeneral Manager for Design, IBM

Phil Gilbert is the General Manager for Design at IBM.

Since 2012, Phil has led the reinvigorated IBM design program, spearheading a broader transformation of how the company’s teams understand and solve complex problems. The program is based on two principles: adding formally-trained designers into IBM at an un-precedented scale, and reskilling its global workforce in design thinking and agile prac-tices. Through 2016, more than 1,200 profes-sional designers have been added, and more than 50,000 other IBMers have been certified in design thinking practices.

Phil is in demand around the world as an acknowledged expert and thought leader on topics of portfolio and software design, design gov-ernance, strategy and culture.

He graduated as a Pe-et (top ten) senior from the University of Okla-homa in 1978 and lives in Austin, Texas.

PanelsPANEL SESSION: THE ROLE OF DESIGN SCIENCE RESEARCH IN DIGITAL INNOVATION (11 A.M.)

Digital innovation is the appropriation of digital technologies in the process of and as the result of innovation. Digital innovation is rapidly becoming a dominant paradigm and research focus in the fields of innovation, entrepreneurship, strategic management, organizational design, and information systems. The phenomena of digital innovation encompasses new digital technologies, information digitization, digitally-enabled generativity, innovation management, and a greater range and reach of innovation across organizational boundaries. Surveys show that organizations across a wide range of disciplines view digital innovation to be of vital importance.

In this panel, we investigate the role of design science research in digital innovation; both in research and in practice. A recent special issue of MISQ on IT and Innovation leads with an editorial on defining a research agenda for theorizing about digital innovation. In summary, four new logics of theorizing are proposed:

» Dynamic problem-solution design pairing – Digital innovation management as a sporadic, parallel, and heterogeneous generation, forking, merging, termination, and refinement of problem-solution design pairs.

» Orchestration – Problem-solution matching as a microfoundation of digital innovation orchestration; in-creasing role of digital technologies in enabling or supporting such orchestration.

» Socio-cognitive sensemaking – Shared cognitive and joint sensemaking as critical element of digital inno-vation management.

» Technology affordances and constraints – Considers digital technology use as sets of affordances and constraints for particular innovating actors and helps explain how/why the ‘same’ technology can be re-purposed by different actors or has different innovation outcomes in different contexts.

We propose that design science research is the pragmatic set of activities that will bring these logical theories ‘down to Earth’ to make measurable impacts to practice and rigorous knowledge contributions to research. Each of the panelists will present an exciting DSR project that illustrates a compelling vision of digital innovation. Then the panelists, with engaged audience participation, will discuss and debate the synergistic relationship of DSR and digital innovation.

OPEN SESSION: ISSUES AND NEEDS FOR TOOL-SUPPORT IN DESIGN SCIENCE RESEARCH (2 P.M.)

Design Science research (DSR) is now an accepted research paradigm in the Information Systems field, aiming at developing purposeful IT artifacts and knowledge about the design of IT artifacts. A rich body of knowledge on approaches, methods, and frameworks supports researchers in conducting DSR projects. While methodological guidance is abundant, there is no advanced tool support that helps Design Science researchers structuring and managing their DSR projects and corresponding (intermediate) results. In this interactive session we would like to foster an open discussion on issues and needs of Design Science researchers with respect to providing advanced tool support. Thereby, we ask participants to contribute with their thoughts on potential tool support to structure, conduct, document, maintain, and present DSR projects, including the resulting design knowledge and artifacts. As a result of the session, we plan to publish a panel report including the findings and propose suggestions for research on advancing tool support for DSR.
