SOCIETY OF ST. VINCENT DE PAUL The Society wishes to thank the parishioners of St. John Vianney for the financial support to meet the needs of the poor in our parish and community. We wish also to thank the SJV Societies that contributed support so that the St. Vincent de Paul Society could function successfully.

The donations were used to provide food, clothes, and financial assistance to qualified clients. They have brought faith and hope to many grateful families. Your faithful support will ensure that the Society will continue to serve the poor and needy.

Quick Journey Through the Bible

If you have ever wanted to read the Bible, but did not know where or how to begin, then this 9-week Quick Journey through the Bible Parish Study is for you! Join the many parishioners who have attended and enjoyed this journey over the last few years. A Quick Journey through the Bible makes reading the Bible not only easy, but exciting. In this study, you will learn the major people, places, events and themes of the Bible—getting the “big picture” of salvation history. Perhaps for the first time in your life, you will understand the overview of the Bible story. This then makes your Bible reading and even the Sunday mass readings come alive like never before. A Quick Journey through the Bible will be offered for 9-weeks starting in September:

· Sunday Evenings – 7:30pm – 9:00pm (Sept 23rd – Dec 2nd )

MUSIC MINISTRY NEWS Now that the summer months are behind us, I thought it might be a good time to give all of you an update on the Ministry of Music here at St. John Vianney. The past several months have gone by very fast for me as I continue to “get to know everyone” here in the parish. I would like to thank all those who have approached me at church, as well as, around the community (mostly at Foodtown or Shoprite) with such a warm welcome and such positive comments. I am indeed very happy to be here at SJV! This being said, there is no way for a music ministry program to be successful without having the involvement of many, many people. I am certainly grateful to all those who have given of their time and talent to be part of the Adult Choir, Children’s Choir, and the Folk Choir. I am also blessed to have working with me Jennie Esposito, Sage Lutton, Michelle Murray, and Peg VanKleef. We are looking to welcome new members to each of our groups this season. Below you will find some general information about the musical groups here at St. John Vianney. We hope you will choose to join one or more of our groups!

Adult Choir This group is open to all adults as well as high school students!! We meet each Wednesday evening from 7:30 to 9:00 Pm in the church. The Adult Choir sings most Sundays at the 9:00 Am mass and occasionally at the 10:45 Am mass. The Adult Choir also sings for Midnight Mass on Christmas Eve, Holy Week, The Easter Vigil and several other liturgical celebrations throughout the year. Our first rehearsal for the new season will be on Wednesday September 26th at 7:30 Pm in the church. New members are always welcome and encouraged to attend!

Children’s Choir This group is open to ALL children in the parish from second grade and up! We had a number of children come out to sing this spring for Easter as well as our May Crowning and our celebration for Sister Rose’s 50th Jubilee. We would like to invite all of you to come back and sing with us again this fall! The children’s choir generally meets for practice on Tuesday afternoons from 4:00 Pm to 5:00 Pm in the church. The Children’s Choir generally sings on the second Sunday of Each Month at the 9:00 Am Mass. Later this fall we would like to have the children sing on the fourth Sunday as well. Our next practice will be Tues. Oct.9th. Next time we will sing will be Oct. 14th at 9AM Mass. Hope to see you at practice!!

Folk Group The folk group can be found playing and singing generally at 12:15 Pm mass on Sundays. Rehearsals are held on Sundays at 11:00 Am in the meeting room in the church foyer. The fourth Sunday of each month we have our teenage parishioners participate by singing and reading at the 12:15 Pm mass. The folk group is under the direction of Ms. Jennie Esposito. Please feel free to see Jennie following the 12:15 Pm mass if you wish to join or if you have any questions.

I would like to once again welcome all of you to join any one of our musical groups here at SJV. Please see me after mass or contact me at (908) 331-0471 or e-mail me at [email protected] if you wish to join or have any questions. I thank you once again for all your prayers and best wishes for me and the Music Ministry here at S.J.V.

TWENTY-FIFTH SUNDAY OF ORDINARY TIME SEPTEMBER 23, 2012

Family Day A Day to Eat Dinner With Your Children Family Day

Monday, September 24, 2012

Parents: What your kids really want at the dinner table is YOU!

Families are encouraged to celebrate Family Day by eating dinner together on Monday, September 24th and everyday. More importantly, talk with your children. During dinner, turn off the TV and let the answering machine record

your calls. Involve the entire family in planning and cooking the meal if possible. Start a family tradition of beginning family meals with a prayer or by lighting candles. Remember to have dessert or consider playing a board game after dinner to keep the conversations going.

Family Day embodies the values and teachings of the Church. Starting a Sunday ritual of attending Mass and sharing a meal as a family is a meaningful tradition that will increase parental engagement and communication with your children.

Secrets to Successful Family Dinners Start the pattern of family dinners when the children are young.

Use Sunday as the day to pick several nights during the upcoming week when the entire family can eat together. Make your best attempt to stick to the schedule.

Encourage your children to create menu ideas and participate in meal preparation.

Turn off the TV and let your answering machine take care of your incoming calls.

Talk about what happened in everyone’s day: school, work, extracurricular activities, or current events.

Establish a routine to start and end each meal. Say grace, light candles or tell a story. Eat dessert or play a board game after dinner to continue the conversation.

Keep conversations positive and make sure everyone gets a chance to speak.

Celebrate Family Day with your family by having dinner together on September 24!

YOUTH MINISTRY

Great thanks to all those who served at the St. Cecelia parish party last Saturday night, you were amazing! More thanks to all the new members who have been checking out Youth Group the last two weeks, I hope we are beginning to win you over! It was great to meet so many of you earlier today at St. Cecelia's confirmation retreat! You are invited to check out our next youth ministry meeting this Sunday evening, September 23rd in Trailer D from 7:00pm to 8:30pm. Permission slips for the Fall retreat weekend as well as a youth ministry calendar will be handed out at the meeting. On another note, in an effort to communicate youth ministry information to our members, the office of youth ministry uses emails, facebook messages, and texting. If you are interested in receiving youth group information you can email your favorite form of communication to John Cook, Director of Youth Ministry, @ [email protected]. Mr. Cook can also be contacted by phone at 732 381-0008 or you can friend me on Facebook. New Members are always very welcome! See you Sunday!

Become an Altar Server for St. John Vianney!

You can play an important role at Mass! Attention all 5th through 8th grade students, in the Parish Catechetical Program or St. John Vianney School.

Did you know that you are eligible to become an altar server? St. John Vianney’s Altar Servers play an essential role in the celebration of the Mass and other special liturgies. Any interested students in grades 5 or higher are welcome to join. We are looking for dependable altar servers who can be counted on to fulfill their duties. This is for anyone who is part of the St. John Vianney parish. It is a beautiful way to support our parish community and a wonderful opportunity to assist Monsignor O’Neill, Father Joseph and Father John, as well as Deacon Tom and Deacon Joe.

Applications will be available in the SJV school office or the Catechetical Program office. Completed applications may be dropped off at the SJV school office during the week or the Catechetical Program office during class or Sunday in the sacristy after any Mass. Applications need to be turned in by October 7th so training materials can be prepared. All training will be done in the church on five Sunday afternoons in October and November beginning the weekend of October 14th. An altar server commissioning service will be held at the 9:00 AM mass on November 18 th after training is completed. The application has the dates and times of each training session. It is imperative that all new servers attend all training sessions. We ask that parents of new altar servers stay during the training, so you can fully understand the commitment needed. Each server will be assigned to a team and a schedule of Masses will be made available.

If you have any questions about this special parish ministry, please call one of the committee members and we’ll be happy to help.

Sincerely, Mary Jantas (732-574-1191) Thomas Bresnan (732-827-2821) Agnes Bacsik (732-388-9034)
