Miss Behavior

Tries to Behave Dear Miss Behavior:

One of my friends did something recently that hurt me. I think he owes me an apology. How can I get him to apologize?

Sincerely,

Miffed Dear Miffed:

Saying "I'm sorry" is one of the hardest things for us human beings to do. I myself find lots of words much easier to say; for example, "Hi, how are you?" slides off the tongue much more easily than "I was wrong." I must admit that I commiserate with your plight; why, for months I waited for two acquaintances, one relative, and a perfect (or not so perfect) stranger to apologize to me for behaving quite badly, when suddenly, I had a moment of anagnorisis.* It occurred to me that: a. It is very difficult, if not impossible, to engineer the behavior of others. b. It is perfectly possible that at least four acquaintances, three relatives, and four perfect (or not so perfect) strangers think that I owe them an apology! After all, just as I may find someone else's words and/or behavior to be offensive (or merely annoying), so may others think the same of my words and deeds. c. We must love and forgive others; recall, please the words of the Our Father: "and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us."

My advice, in summary, is to forgive, forget, and to develop a somewhat less penetrable exterior (a thicker skin, in other words).

Sincerely,

Miss Behavior

Miss Behavior's Glossary: anagnorisis, made quite famous by dear old Aristotle in the Poetics (his analysis of drama), is a moment of insight, of recognition, when a character acknowledges his or her flaws, mistakes, and/or misdeeds.

SAINT OF THE WEEK

Saint Vincent de Paul

He is one of the great saints whose legacy continues to help the poor in soup kitchens and shelters around the world. Vincent de Paul was born on April 24, 1581 in Pouy, Gascony, France to farmers

who sold their oxen when Vincent was fifteen so that he could enter the seminary. When Vincent later attended the University of Toulouse, he found it to be a place not of peace but of conflict, both intellectual and physical, among different groups of students. Vincent persevered and was ordained to the priesthood when he was nineteen, actually too young for the role of priest according to the Council of Trent. Vincent again avoided conflict, this time by continuing his studies instead of exercising his vocation. He earned his Bachelor of Theology degree in 1604 and later on a Licentiate in Canon Law from the University of Paris. Vincent was to experience violence again when in 1605 he was taken prisoner by Barbary pirates who took him to Tunis in Africa. There he was sold as a slave and spent two years in servitude. Vincent was not the best slave for his first master, a fisherman, since he suffered from seasickness. Then he was sold to a physician who taught him a good deal about healing. His master’s gifts led to a voyage to Istanbul for both the slave and his owner; however, the master died during the voyage and Vincent de Paul was sold to a priest who had become a Muslim in order to escape slavery. This former priest had three wives, one of whom began a dialogue with Vincent. Eventually, this wife convinced her husband that he should not have renounced his Catholic faith. The master and his slave eventually left Africa and returned to France in 1607. Vincent eventually went to Rome to further study the Faith and then was sent to France where he became a court chaplain, then a parish priest in Clichy, and later chaplain for the Gondi family. The Countess of Gondi was interested in helping the poor. Now Vincent de Paul had found his true calling. He founded the Ladies of Charity, women of means who were willing to help those who had little. Vincent and his friends supported the missions, established hospitals, helped those harmed by war, and even ransomed slaves in North Africa. The Ladies of Charity eventually became the Daughters of Charity, and before long Vincent became the head of the Congregation of the Mission, also known as the Vincentians. Vincent de Paul died on September 27, 1660; the date of his death is now his feast day. Vincent was canonized by Pope Clement XII in 1737. Our saint is the patron of all charitable works. French university students founded the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul to serve the needs of the poor. Well over one hundred countries now aid the poor in Saint Vincent’s name.

Join us for a fun time of work and fellowship on Saturday, September 30th at Saint Nicholas Church Grounds and Saturday, October 14th at Holy Trinity Church Grounds. We will meet in the St. Nicholas Lower Church Hall at 9:30 AM on the 30th and will gather together for a light lunch after cleaning. Sign-up sheets are in the back of both churches, or contact the parish office @ 330-755-9819. Everyone is invited to come help keep our parish beautiful. Confirmation students are encouraged to volunteer to earn service hours! Signing up in advance is helpful so we can ensure that we have enough supplies. We are hoping to have enough volunteers to complete the following projects: 1. Clean Windows in both Sacristies and behind Altar 2. Clean Windows at Entrances 3. Wash Floor in Choir Loft 4. Wash Tile and Windows in Restrooms 5. Wash Pews, Kneelers and Floor
