  • ‘What about you, do you want to go away too?’

With this question Jesus turns to the inner circle of the Twelve. Peter’s response reflects full belief: there is nowhere else to turn to gain life; Jesus is ‘the holy one of God,’ that is, the One who was ‘with God in the beginning’ and who has come down from God. In spite of being confused and deserted by many of his friends Peter hangs in there with Jesus. He holds on to faith when all the signs show that a hasty retreat may be a better course of action.

Peter and the inner circle have sat at the feet of Jesus and heard his Voice. Today we, too, are gifted with His voice through the Gospel and from within the Church which sometimes can frustrate and disillusion but which transmits the tradition of the Life of the person and ministry of Jesus of Nazareth – the Word made flesh who dwelt amongst us.

However, if we are to live and encounter Jesus fully through Word and Sacrament, it is important that we pause and consider the challenge of Pope Francis when he said 'Not infrequently, contrary to the promptings of the Holy Spirit, the life of the Church can become a museum piece or the possession of a select few. This can occur when some groups of Christians give excessive importance to certain rules, customs or ways of acting,'

Most of us may not have the deeper theological answers to the meaning of life, and our Church experience at times can leave us disillusioned and empty, but Peter's answer remains:

‘Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.’
