The Twenty-First Sunday of Ordinary Time

The Scriptures for today speak of leadership in the kingdom, be it a spiritual or a worldly leader. The Isaiah passage is important to understand ow the king may appoint someone to be his chief minister, the one who will be the first assistant to the king. If that minister dies, is ousted for some reason, the king shall appoint a new minister. When a king dies, he is replaced by his oldest son, “the first born, the blessed.” Matthew narrates the instance where Jesus decides to assign His first successor for the Church that He has come to establish on earth, prior to his Passion and Death. The opening verse from Isaiah reveals that Yahweh is the one in charge of dismissing Shebna, who is “master of the palace.” A similar position today would be someone like a Prime Minister. As the speaker, Yahweh is indicating a new day has arrived with Eliakim , who shall replace the erring Shlebna. Eliakim shall have the distinctive dress, the decorative symbol of Shebna’s former position that displayed his authority and set him apart from the ordinary person. Yahweh uses the word “father” to show the quality of this leadership position to rule and to follow the king’s expressed will, for this person shall care for the people as though they are his own children. The statement “I will place the key of the House of David on his shoulder” is symbolic of the passing of leader-ship, for the keeper of the key controls the entrance and exit to a building. The manner of Yahweh’s speech indicates the ac-tual investiture ceremony of the new “master of the palace.” Simon has shown himself worthy of a leadership position in the kingdom that Jesus has come to establish. As a symbol of his mission of stewardship, Jesus gives him a new name and the symbol of his office, the key, as “master of the palace” that is the Church that Jesus has come to establish. Before naming Simon as the “building rock” of His Church (Peter is derived from a Greek word, meaning rock), Jesus poses a question to His disciples, “Who do people say that the Son of Man is?” “Son of Man” is used by Jesus only, never by the disciples. The phrase first appears in Daniel 7:13. Simon assumes the role of spokesperson and answers for all, for Jesus has asked all the disciples. Simon declares Him to be the Messiah, which means “the anointed one” and “the Son of the living God.” (The process of anointing is to set someone apart from the rest. The Jews have expected the Messiah to be a military leader to restore Israel to its former power and prestige, not one like Jesus who has come to establish the Kingdom of His Father on earth. Simon’s identity of Jesus makes Jesus declare that his answer has come from “my heavenly Father” not from any knowledge that Simon has. In renaming Simon Jesus has placed Peter as the one to succeed Him in continuing and maintaining the Church He has been commissioned to establish by the Father. Jesus not only names Peter but also stipulates how he is to function in this leadership role much like Yahweh commissioned Eliakim in the first passage. Keys are the symbol of Peter’s authority, similar to Eliakim’s keys as “master of the Palace.”. This section of the Bible creates the succession of passage of leadership from Peter to the Popes through the many centuries that the Church has been founded. The selection of a new pope is referred to as a successor of Saint Peter. Both passages attest that God is in command in

choosing the leaders for His people.

PARISH UPDATE

One hundred forty-nine (149) people attended our three “Sunday” Masses last weekend: 5 pm (54), 9 am (60), and 11:30

am (35). Keep in mind that starting September 5-6, our “Sunday” Masses will return to their usual times: Saturday at

5:00 pm, and Sunday at 9:00 am and 11:00 am (not 11:30 am).

THANK YOU FOR YOUR VERY GENEROUS ON-GOING WEEKLY SUPPORT of St. Flor ian Par ish during

the COVID-19 restrictions. May Our Lord continue to bless you and your families and our Parish Family as well!

Read Fr. John’s Homily at www.saintflorian.org under the “Parish Life” tab.

EUCHARISTIC ADORATION is a time of healing. This is what Jesus told a Benedictine monk

by way of locution: “It is in the Eucharist that wait for them as physician and as remedy. If they are

sick in their body or in their soul, let them seek Me out, and I will heal them of the evil that afflicts

them.” (In Sinu Jesu p. 14) For August 11-12, the following hours had only one adorer: 12 noon, 2

pm (no one signed), 6 pm, 8 pm (no one signed), 9 pm (no one signed), 1 am, 2 am, 4 am, and 6

am. Some adorers have been taking two hours so that all times are covered. At least two

adorers should be present for each hour. PLEASE NOTE: If no one shows up for the hour after you

within 5 minutes, please call my cell phone (leave a message if I do not answer), and I will come to

church to fill in as soon as possible. You do not have to wait for me, but please call me. When the Blessed

Sacrament is in exposition, someone must be present.

CHURCH NOW OPEN 24/7 for silent adoration of Jesus in the Most Blessed Sacrament in the Tabernacle.

Eucharistic Adoration – with the Blessed Sacrament in exposition on the altar -- will continue as usual from

Tuesday after the 8 am Mass until right before the 8 am Mass Wednesday. At all times on all other days, the church

will be open for silent prayer and adoration before our Lord in the Tabernacle. Everyone is encouraged to stop in

each daily if possible at a convenient time, and to sign our log-in time sheet so that we can gauge participation in

this. Although one hour of prayer is encouraged, 30-minute or even 15-minute or 5-minute visits can help us

toward perpetual adoration. These are unprecedented times that invite our full turning to the Lord. Thank you for

your response.

“The Accent On-Air” premieres Aug. 23 on WTAE-TV

“The Accent On-Air” features a new half-hour special on Sunday, Aug. 23, at 11:30 a.m. on WTAE-TV. See a sit-down interview with Bishop Malesic before he leaves to become Bishop of Cleveland, and hear what the bishop’s 102-year-old father has to say about the change. Learn more about a major donation that has boosted Catholic school enrollment by nearly 10%. Meet the winners of Energy Smart 2020: local students who submitted creative expressions of caring for God’s creations. And hear about a new friary in the town of Indiana where Capuchin Franciscan priests are providing new leadership for local parishes. Unable to see the show Aug. 23? It will be broadcast again on Sunday, Aug. 30 at 11:30 a.m. on WTAE. “The Accent On-Air” is always on TheAccentOnline.org.
