Fr. Phil Cleary (a classmate of mine) will preach at all the Masses. The Fiesta is Sunday afternoon. (The Bears don’t play until evening.) We are just a part of their two week stay in the area. You can learn a lot more about the organization from their website. I hope you are able to enjoy their presentations and I hope to see you at the Fiesta. KUDOS to all who have planned for their visit, for those who have supported the children in whatever way they can and to those who opened their homes in hospitality. The Outreach Committee has ended a relationship with Mary, Queen of Heaven parish in Cicero and has begun working with Our Lady of Charity in Cicero, particularly with their struggling school. (Their pastor, Fr. Mark Bartosic, is also pastor of St. Francis of Rome whose school is stabilized.) Our Lady of Charity (which is about 25 minutes away from us) is not in need of our financial support, but is looking for help from business professionals in the areas of finance, strategic planning, marketing and fundraising. If you think you might be able to help, please contact me, The weather will inevitably change, but the color and beauty of SJC remains constant with people living out their faith as best they can. Thank you for contributing your unique part of the total picture. Give God the praise! Peace, Fr. David

Dear Parishioners, These first two weeks of October have had spectacular weather. The warm temperatures, the colors of the trees and bushes have been daily gifts of the glory of God. Hold on tight to them: we all know what’s coming. The Catholicism series has been very well attended by over 400 people. The Friday showing is repeated the following Tuesday afternoon and evening. The topic for the second week was a contemporary understanding of the Beatitudes. Now the third week is underway. You are welcome whenever you can join in. Feel free to stay for the discussion or leave and think about it yourself. After the first five parts of the series we will break for the holidays. After the New Year, we will offer parts 6 through 10.

We welcome this weekend Friends of the Orphans to our parish and to homes of parishioners. To help understand what this organization is all about, let me quote from their website: “Friends of the Orphans support a network of nine Nuestros Pequeños Hermanos (NPH, Spanish for "Our Little Brothers and Sisters") homes and their outreach programs in Latin America and the Caribbean. Together, we transform the lives of orphaned, abandoned and disadvantaged children by creating families for life through values of unconditional love, shared responsibility and education. This enables children to grow into caring and productive members of their communities.”

ARCHDIOCESE OF CHICAGO

October, 2011 Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Each Sunday at the celebration of the Eucharist, Christ sends us out into the world to share in his mission: “As the Father has sent me, so I send you.” World Mission Sunday is a universal celebration of this call to mission as it is lived out by the whole Church. The call to mission is made manifest each day as the Church endeavors to make Christ known to the world. This is done through direct proclamation of who Christ is and through the many services that the Church provides in every country throughout the world. Children are educated, the sick are nursed, the elderly and disabled are visited and cared for, adults are given opportunities for faith formation, seminarians and religious women and men are given resources to grow spiritually and intellectually, all in the name of Christ. A commitment to mission strengthens our faith and invigorates parish life. Once we have encountered Christ and experience the grace of conversion, we are sent as missionary disciples into the world to give witness to Christ. Our responsibility for mission never lessens because “the pilgrim Church on earth is missionary by its very nature.” World Mission Sunday is our yearly reminder of how the whole Church shares in the mission of Christ at home and abroad. Blessed Pope John Paul II reminded us that the Church’s mission is “very far from completion.” We are called to go beyond the borders of our parishes and neighborhoods and reach out to people who still do not know Christ and to those who have abandoned faith in Christ. We are all on mission, and today we pause to reflect on the missionary efforts of the Church throughout the world. Please join me in renewing our commitment to mission as an archdiocese. I ask you to pray for the work of the Pontifical Mission Societies and missionaries throughout the world. I encourage you to promote their work in your parish, in religious education programs and schools. Let us ask the Holy Spirit to deepen our desire to be on mission and give us the grace to be zealous in spreading our faith. May God bless you and reward you for your generosity. Sincerely yours in Christ,

Francis Cardinal George, O.M.I. Archbishop of Chicago

Daily Meditation

The work “prayer,” which Bill Wilson rightly juxtaposes with the word “meditation,” is a code word for an entirely different way of processing life. When you “pray,” you are supposed to take off one “thinking cap” and put on another “thinking cap” that will move you from an egocentric perspective—from your own private needs, hurts, angers and memories—to a soul-centric perspective, what Malcolm Gladwell calls “thinking without thinking.” Prayer is not about changing God, but being willing to let God change us, or as Step Eleven says, “praying only for the knowledge of God’s will.” If you are able to switch minds to the mind of Christ, your prayer has already been answered! That new mind knows, understands, accepts, and sees correctly, widely, and wisely. Its prayers are always answered because they are, in fact, the prayers of God too. From Breathing Underwater: Spirituality and the Twelve Steps Starter Prayer: Breathe through me.

Let Us Know If you or a Loved One is in the Hospital

If you or a loved one is in the hospital, you are reminded to notify the Parish Center in order that a priest or Minister of Care is able to visit you and to bring the Eucharist to you during your hospital stay. Due to government regulations, HIPPA, and for privacy reasons, the hospital will not notify the parish. The Parish Staff relies upon you, the family, to inform us. Call the parish office, 708-246-4404 with the appropriate information, individual’s name and hospital

SJC Students Learn About Fire Safety Western Springs Firefighter Jim Reynolds visited our school to teach our students some important fire safety lessons. Our students learn about many safety topics throughout the year, thanks to

visits from Western Springs Police and Firefighters.

SJC Third Grade Students Make Landforms Our third grade students created landform exhibits as part of their social studies unit on landforms. Each child used homemade dough to create mountains, plateaus, valleys, rivers and lakes. The students will now paint the landforms. This is always a very exciting project in third grade.

Sixth Grade Liturgy Planning SJC 6th grade students spent their lunch period planning their upcoming School Liturgy. Jim Clauer, our Parish Liturgist, taught the students how to write their own petitions for the Mass.

It is great to see the students planning liturgies as well as just participating!

Get Ready for Harvest Saturday On November 12th!

This annual program begins on Saturday, November 5th from 9-11:30 a.m. Volunteers from our Crossroads Youth Groups will leave yers at homes and businesses in Western Springs with details of this important food collec on. They will return the following Saturday, November 12th star ng at 10:30 am to collect the goods from the front porches of those who wish to contribute. For those outside of Western Springs, please bring your dona ons to the Parish Center or school. We hope that in the future, we will have enough volunteers to expand our collec on area! This endeavor depends on hundreds of volunteers and the generosity of our parishioners and local residents to collect large quan es of non-perishable food and personal hygiene products, even cleaning products and pet food! These goods are immediately distributed to a variety of local and Chicago-based food pantries to help the needy. As we prepare for our own Thanksgiving dinners, please keep in mind those who depend on the Church for their own holiday dinners. Single servings are preferred to bulk size so we can help as many as possible. Whether it is a can or two of soup, or a whole bag of non-perishables, please consider making a dona on. Harvest Saturday Schedule: 10 a.m. Mass in the Parish Center 10:30 a.m.to 1:00 p.m. Food Collec on, Sor ng, and Boxing 1-2:00 p.m. Loading the Truck 2-6:0 p.m. Delivery and Unloading at St. Thomas of Canterbury Parish in Uptown Please consider joining us for as much as you like! Introducing Christian Meditation as an 11th Step Practice*

We are a group of men and women from 12 step programs, following the teachings of John Main and the World Community for Christian Meditation. We are not a replacement for, nor are we affiliated with, any 12-step program of recovery. We are here to share this ancient path of contemplative prayer as a way to practice the 11th Step: “Sought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with God as we understood Him, praying only for knowledge of his will for us and the power to carry that out."

Please join us for a time of meditation 10:30 – 11:30 a.m. every Monday

Starting October 17 in the Parish Center

All 12 step members are invited: Those who meditate,

Those who want to learn to meditate, and Those who want to know more about meditation

Thank You Letters From Kolbe House Dear Parishioners, I appreciate tremendously the recent sharing check that was sent for $1200 to Kolbe House. The $200 increase again leaves me without words to express my gratitude not only for your generosity but also for the incredible symbol of support that it represents. I am very grateful to Fr. David for his active concern and help in what we are doing here. Your support gives us new energy to support with out presence the men, women, and youth that we visit in Cook and Lake County Jails as well as the Juvenile Detention Center where Fr. David Kelly leads a team of volunteers. Fr. Kelly and I are looking at ways that we can make this Archdiocesan Year of Teens and Young Adults beneficial for parishes where many at risk youth live. We hope to be able to train people to lead reconciliation circles, which is a Restorative Justice Practice. Besides this we hope to bring youth and young adults from different areas together. Meeting one another brings new life for everyone. These at risk youth are trying just to live day by day. Some of them are on the streets. Some come from homes where their parents are on drugs. They live in an environment where their personal safety is always at risk. I will keep you informed as to our progress. Know that we are all grateful for your support. I remain Your brother in the Lord, Rev. Arturo Perez Rodriguez

From Our Lady of Perpetual Help Parish Dear Parishioners, Thank you for your September “Sharing” check for $600. We are grateful for your continuing support, especially as we purchase books and other materials for implementing the new Roman Missal. Also, I thank you again for the great group of young people—and adults—who came to offer their services to people in this area. We continue to hear how much their presence and their work were appreciated. May God continue to bless all of you. We continue to keep you in our prayer. Gratefully, Sr. Margie & Sr. Joyce & OLPH Parish

That’s All I Need to Know – St. Thaddeus Oct. 9th Visit Father Frank Sasso, pastor of our sharing parish, St. Thaddeus, captured the essence of Sunday’s 5:00 p.m. liturgy during his homily, with a quote from a young child, “The Lord is my Shepard, and that’s all I need to know”. The sounds and sights of the St. Thaddeus choir and Praise Dancers filled our church with energy and enthusiasm. During the fellowship at the Parish Center, close to 100 guests shared a wonderful meal, served by our young adults preparing for confirmation. We sang happy birthday to Dorothy Mae Thomas, a St. Thaddeus parishioner, and caught up with news of old friends and new. If you missed this liturgy, plan now to attend the Black History Liturgy at the end of February. We’ll save a spot on the bus for you!
