He talked about the Opportunities, Challenges and the role of Policies in increasing production of leather for sports footwear. He informed that the 5 major brands in sports footwear procure leathers from BLC/ LWG rated factories only and the Indian leather sector needs investment to improve infrastructure and quality to match the demand of sports footwear. He expressed that though 100% FDI is allowed in leather and footwear sector in India, the FDI flow has not been significant and needs facilitation in terms of easing laws, single window clearance, etc. He also called for R&D by CLRI on improving man made leather (PU Microfibre) which at present is being imported from China and Taiwan and make Indian made samples affordable. Mr. Ralph, Walter Schneider Head- Product Management (Finishing), Clariant Produkte (Deutschland) GmbH during his presentation emphasized that leather is the material of prestige, durability, luxury, fashion and comfort. Value addition and upgradation keeping elegance intact is important and he explained the products like pre-bottoms, thermo active fillers, transparent pigments, aqua tops, etc. and systems developed by Clariant in this regard which can help in sustainable development involving environmental and social aspects and adding new functionalities to leather. Mr. Kaustava Sengupta, Associate Professor, NIFT who presented a talk on value addition to leather/ leather products through design. He said that the needs of the consumer may be divided as Basic, Social, Esteem and Ideological needs and a ‘Story’ is required to market the products and make it popular among the users.
