FROM THE RECTOR 5 October 2014

Dear Friends,

The parable of the rebellious vinedressers calls up the whole drama of Israel, that elect and rebellious people now faced with a final decision. The image of the vine to designate Israel would have been familiar to every Jew versed in the scriptures, and echoes the ‘song of the vineyard’ of Isaiah 5: 1-7 (our first reading).

But the parable as told by Jesus contained a new point—the sending of the son, accompanied by the moving words: ‘They will respect my son.’

Without doubt, a human owner would hesitate to risk the life of his son by sending him alone to face some rebels who had just killed his servants! The paradox of God sacrificing his Son so that the fruits of the kingdom can at last be produced is beginning to be glimpsed.

Christ is the stone rejected by the builders (an image in the psalms used to refer to Israel itself), but now chosen by the Father to be the cornerstone of a new people built on him, who will produce the fruit of the kingdom. This is the Church's calling, and its task.

With every blessing,

Fr Steven Salmon, Rector
