Dear Friends,The HealthAlliance Foundation is dedi-cated to supporting HealthAlliance of the Hudson Valley’s mission, healthcare programs, services and facilities. For over30 years, the Foundation has worked tofund quality healthcare in Ulster Countyand surrounding communities. TheHealthAlliance Foundation remains theonly non-profit organization whose sole mission is to support HealthAllianceHospital.
As plans for consolidating to a singlehospital campus solidify during 2015,the Foundation is focusing its support inthree areas: equipment upgrades, qualitycare and medical education. Each ofthese areas is key to making the transi-tion to one campus a success and con-tinuing to offer state-of-the-art servicesand maintaining a well-trained staff.
The Foundation’s premier fundraisingevent, the Tulip Ball, will be held on April25th at the Lazy Swan Golf & CountryClub Village. This year’s honoree is Dr.James P. Dear Friends,I want to express my deep appreciation for the care and professionalism each employee displays every day at the Health-Alliance campuses. And I want to thankthe community—business leaders, not-for-profit directors and individual donors—for the support given over the past 19 months. HealthAlliance is more than aname on a building. It is the commitmentand care of the folks who walk through the doors each day attending to the healthcare needs of our community.
We are working hard to obtain the approvals that will allow us to fulfill our vision of a single campus. We are makinggood progress in taking the next steps in our affiliation discussions. The Health-Alliance Board has authorized me to moveus into the next phase of due diligencewith Westchester Medical Center. Duringthis time we will define our governancestructure, collaborative physician oppor-tunities, and our consolidated campus delivery model and work toward a finalized agreement.

David ScarpinoPresident & CEO
We have shared our vision with our architects and they have confirmed thefeasibility of consolidating on the Mary’sAvenue Campus. Our DSRIP* applicationwas submitted. Our grant application to the Department of Health for the capital required to fulfill that vision was submittedin February. We expect much of the aboveto be accomplished by the end of the next60 days. As advancement with detailedplans continues, we will work closely withour boards, Westchester Medical Centerleadership, our hospital physicians, ourelected officials, local lending institutionsand the HealthAlliance Foundation.
Transparency will continue to be theguidepost for any and all external discus-sions. We live in a special community andwork with incredibly dedicated friends and family. Our job is to preserve thosestrong traditions for those who follow us.
I look forward to sharing updates onour progress in the coming months.
Sincerely,
David ScarpinoPresident & CEOHealthAlliance of the Hudson Valley

he landscape of healthcare is swiftlychanging—across the country and herein Ulster County. The HealthAlliance
Foundation (HAF), which supports the programs, services, and facilities of HealthAlliance of theHudson Valley, has geared up to meet thesechanges with a three-pronged approach in 2015.
The Foundation has identified three criticalareas that will benefit from funds raised in thecoming year: technology and equipment to helpmedical professionals diagnose illnesses more accurately and efficiently; treatment advancesin the Emergency Room and specialty servicessuch as dialysis, cancer, and wound care; andtraining to keep hospital staff on the cutting edgeof patient care.
Excellence in hospital services through employee-based training will gain increased emphasis in theyears beyond 2015. “The HealthAlliance FoundationBoard and staff are working on a three-year fund-raising plan aimed at supporting hospital-wide departmental staff training needs,” explained SteffenKraehmer, Executive Director of HAF. “ Our Execu-tive Committee —Glenn Decker, Chair; Mary AnnHildebrant, 1st Vice Chair; Robert Tonner, 2nd ViceChair; Rick Mantey, Treasurer, and; Chris Smailer,Secretary—are eager to meet with sponsors andcommunity members to discuss giving options.”

Dear Mr. Kraehmer:On the morning of Wednesday, January 21, 2015, I fell at work and received a severe laceration on the palm of my right hand.
My fellow worker took me to the ER. I registered upon arrival & was calledin to the ER within a very short time. At once the staff started cleaning the wound and preparing my hand forstitches (10). Each and every person acted in a veryprofessional manner. They were comforting but at the sametime, doing whatever they needed to getme stitched up and on my way home. I am happy to tell you that the ER at the Broadway Campus gets a blueribbon from me.
Very truly yours,A. C., Boiceville, NY
What Happens When Two Becomes One?
As HealthAlliance works toward a one-campus Mary’s Avenue location, the question becomes what will happen to the Broadway campus. David
Scarpino, CEO of HealthAlliance, the company that operates the Broadway and Mary’sAvenue Hospitals, describes the new challenge of healthcare delivery as being howto move “...from volume to value. It’s not about how we house, it’s about how we deliver” healthcare.
“It’s not that the community needs less care, but it needs to be delivered in a different way,” says Joshua Ratner, Chief Strategist for HealthAlliance. That’s why theconcept of a “medical village” is being considered for the Broadway campus. “It wouldbe a single location that would provide out-patient services to the community.”
The proposed center may include a primary care provider, behavioral healthservices, prevention advisors, smaller healthcare providers for outpatient, preventa-tive, and other health and wellness services, and possibly even community-basedprograms like job-training services, higher education partnerships, and seminarspaces. HealthAlliance may operate a few of these services, but a majority wouldbe independent providers renting space and creating a one-stop community forfulfilling a variety of health maintenance needs.
By focusing more intently on delivery methods for preventative measures Ratnersaid, “it might reduce hospital stays. HealthAlliance is serious about establishing amedical village to help keep Kingston and the surrounding communities healthier.”• SOURCE: Paul Kirby, Daily Freeman, 02/28/15
