EX LIBRIS EDITION A library of artist‘s books with reprints of the “favourite books” of important contemporary artists

Since 2002, the publisher Gerhard Theewen has been inviting internationally acclaimed artists to suggest a book, which has had the greatest impact on his or her own work, to be reprinted. Each of these limited-edition reprints is then furnished by the artist with a newly designed cover or dust jacket and complemented by its own personal, signed and numbered ex libris (bookplate) in the form of an offset print, colour photograph, silkscreen etc.

In this way, books from the most varied fi elds and disciplines (including medicine, physics, literature, philosophy, travel, art history and urban planning) which, in some cases, have been out of print for many years, are once again made available to the interested public, albeit in a highly different context, namely as artist’s books, which provide insight into the creative backgrounds of contemporary artists.

Each book is published in two editions:

a) The Book Edition with a signed and numbered ex libris. Edition size: 150 – 300 (exception: 750 for Lawrence Weiner)

b) The Collector’s Edition: a box set including one copy of the Book Edition and an additional larger-format work by the respective artist (also signed and numbered). Edition size: 15 – 50

In some cases, unsigned test prints have been used for illustrations in this brochure. All fi nal bookplates and collector’s editions are, of course, signed and numbered by the respective artist.

Martin Parr: I was immediately struck when I saw „ Be bold with Bananas“ It had some wonderful sexual undertones, and was just plain surreal. The title is also very ambivalent , so when invited to participate in this project , I had no hesitation in selecting this title. Published by the South African Banana board, it is a surprisingly scarce title.“

Gustave Flaubert „La Légende de Saint Julien“

Book: Book:

Berlinde De Bruyckere: When I received the book ‚The Legend of Saint Julian The Hospitaler‘ from my youngest son Andreas, I read it in one sitting. At that time, he himself wasn‘t able to read yet. I told him the story with the same passion and in the impressive words I found in the Gustave Flaubert novel, during a walk in the woods. I couldn‘t have found a better place, a better time to do so. I cherished this experience such, that it may well have inspired me to translate it into the small woolen blanket covering the book. It was a unique experience to read the book in this archaic version of the Dutch language, beautifully documented with wood-cut illustrations. It almost seems disrespectful to make sloppy notes in such a precious book, but for me this is the only way to appropriate a book. To fi nd the quotes that I fi nd crucial. „The maddened stags fought, reared, climbed on each other‘s back; and their bodies, with their antlers entangled, formed a great mound, crumbling and shifting. At length they died, lying on the sand with slavering muzzles, disembellowed, the heaving of their bellies growing less and less by dregrees. Then all was still.“ This quote has been an important inspiration for the sculptures and the drawings titled ‚Romeu my deer‘ and later on for the sculptures titled ‚Actaeon‘. Never literally, but fi guratively.

Collector‘s Edition:

Edition of 100 unique woollen blanket objects of which the even numbers (2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 11, …) are for trade and the uneven numbers (1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13, …) are artist‘s proofs.

Peter Buggenhout: With the rise of Romanticism in the early 19th century, people became aware of the fact that it was almost impossible to truly understand the complex world in which they were living. The unique and individualistic world view (both on a sensory and a cognitive level) that was so typical for this era seemed to be the only way to deal with this complexity. Not much has changed since then. In a way, the Romantic era has not yet come to an end; we are still struggling with a sense of pow-erlessness and the incapability of profoundly understanding our surroundings. More than 100 years after Melville‘s ‚Moby Dick’, the French author Georges Perec wrote the astonishing novel ‚La vie: mode d’emploi’. In timing and approach, these two novels could not be more diff erent - whereby the contents reveal a remarkable resemblance. Melville, writing at the beginning of a new era, begins with a whale and ends up in an impressive analysis of life, death, infi nity and the unaccountable nature of what surrounds us. Perec derives his views on topics such as infi nity, death and the incapability to understand life‘s complexities from an endless summary of details from everyday life. Regardless of the diff erences in approach, the contents of both novels are highly analogous and I personally feel a strong aff inity between these themes and the essence of my own work.

Edition Ex Libris # 23 Mamma Andersson (2015)

Mamma Anderson: In a way this was the most obvious book for me to choose. In 1983 I started working extra as a watchman at Moderna Museet in Stockholm, while studying art. I loved my bywork, walked around in the art history, fantasizing and vegetating. The book shop became a gold mine, where you could fi nd all kinds of interesting stuff . This catalogue/book was brand new at the time. Dick Bengtsson‘s exhibitions was one of the fi rst I watched over, not a very big exhibitions, but I found it exciting. It took a few years before I was really taken by his paintings, but when it happened it was with a great hullabaloo. One could say that his work is the foundation for much of my work. During the 90‘s this book became a sort of bible for me, I started every day with a cup of coff ee and the Dick Bengtsson catalogue. I sometimes copied paintings that I later painted over, sometimes I stole elements from them to my own work. That‘s why it‘s so worn out and stained. Sometimes when I see one of his works I think for a second that it‘s one of mine. That‘s how much I have inter-nalized his imagery. Weirdly enough, there was no publication about his artistry before this one, and it was more than 20 years until a new one came out. The next one was done in 2005, in conjunction with a large Dick Bengtsson exhibition, also this one at Moderna Museet, this exhibition was much larger, containing most of his works. For many years he was seen as an outsider artist, an artist for artists, he was an autodi-dact. His production wasn‘t very large, but on the other hand he didn‘t become very old, he died in 1989 only 53 years old. Today his position is something else, everyone with the least interest in Swedish painters know about him and his paintings are sold at very high prices. I‘m very happy to get the chance to do this project, so that the book can spread to more art souls, also outside of Sweden.

Jockum Nordström: The book I chose is „Barnteckningar och dikter på anhalten före döden“ (Children`s Drawings and Poems from Terèzin, 1942-1944) Why did I choose it? Because I think it‘s an earnest, grave and beautiful book that sets one’s ima-gination and mind off wandering. I think that it is a catalogue actually. An exhibition catalogue of drawings and poems made by children who were imprisoned in a concentration camp. Most of them were killed later. Really damn terrible. I bought the book at a shabby second-hand bookstore in Skärholmen, a suburb south of Stockholm. Found it by accident, it‘s probably ten or fi fteen years ago. This book has never been the basis for my own work. I think above all that it is very nice as a book in itself, a nice piece of printed matter. It was diff icult and challenging to make a new cover. The book was already complete before.

Marcel van Eeden: Ever since I was a teenager, I have always been fascinated by the life and work of J. K. Huysmans. For a long time, ‘À rebours’ (in the Dutch translation) was my favourite book. In ‘After Nature’, a poem by one of my other favourite authors, W. G. Sebald, I discovered a very impres-sive description of the life of Matthias Grünewald. Later, I often used Grünewald and his works in my narrative drawings series. In this book on Grünewald by Huysmans, everything seems to come together. The book is not large and heavy; it fi ts perfectly well into a pocket. It thus comes very close to the much-touted ‘ideal’ book, which makes all other books seem superfl uous. (26 March 2012)

Peter Piller: Already as a student, I was fascinated by Gott-fried Benn, the writing physician for skin and venereal disea-ses. From 18 January through 28 January 1987, I read the nearly 700-page Fischer pocketbook edition of poems (I noted this on page 1; I used to note the exact dates in the books I read, now only the months). I did not understand very much. Then as now, I enjoy reading things that I do not completely understand.

‘Someone had clamped a light dark

purple aster between his teeth.’

Or: ‘Whether roses, snow or seas,

Everything that blossomed has faded.’

Can you really like Benn? And if you do, can you say so? I put the book aside and only picked it again when I moved house. As a student, I probably would not have read ‘Aging as a Problem for Artists’. I had to get closer in age to the target group. To my surprise, I discover someone else in the Benn I used to know. Someone who writes sentences that you do not want to forget, such as: ‘To be mistaken and yet still needing to believe in one’s inner self, this is what it means to be human, and glory begins somewhere beyond victory and defeat.’ And next to this a stranger, one with humour, who does not write for himself, but rather speaks directly to the listener.(17 May 2010)

Thomas Huber: Tradition: In 1928, my grandfather, the Vicar of Basle, commissioned Artaria and Schmidt to build a modern house for his family. One generation later, my father, an architect, took care of the restoration of this architectural monument and wrote a report on this. I grew up with the ideo-logy and language of Modernity, both in my grandparents’ house and later in the home of my parents, who are both architects. It was thus only logical in the succession of generations as son and grandson that I should republish the book written about this house. (12 May 2010)

Rachel Whiteread: I chose this book because it is related to where I live and how I work. My old studio was next to the site of the original matchbox factory. As a child I played with matchbox cars, now my children play with them. A lot of those industrial buildings have been demolished in readiness for the 2012 Olympics. I found an original copy of this book in a junk shop in the late 1980‘s, it seemed like a fi tting tribute to those old buildings and the author / illustrator M.Sasek and to those great matchbox cars. I was happy to give it a new lease of life
