COMING SOONCOMING SOONTraining ScheduleFeb - Nov 2006

Training Schedule will be available late January.Training will start late Feb - Nov.

Christmas is almost upon us again and it seems like only yesterday I was writing last year’s comment. No doubt many of you are already thinking about a well earned break and are looking forward to a prosperous 2006. We can all refl ect back on interesting and exciting year, particularly with a year of fi rsts for Schneider Electric including the launches of 800 Modena and ATV71.

The building boom has certainly started to slow in the last quarter of the year particularly with new residential building permits down approximately 15% over last year. This trend looks to continue in 2006 however, we look forward to bringing you a raft of new products and services during the year that will help add value to your business.

Whilst the outlook for the commercial and industrial sectors continues to look strong the high dollar is continuing to have an effect particularly on those involved in export markets.

In this month’s Schneider News we are proud to bring you an article on our new PDL manufacturing plant in Christchurch, and our continued commitment to manufacturing in New Zealand. Just a few of the featured products include the long awaited Twido Messenger – the ultimate in keeping you in touch with your remote sites, the well priced Magelis touch screens, and the new 56 Series portable protected outlets.

On behalf of Schneider Electric and all staff I would like to thank you for your support of our products and people during 2005. We look forward to sharing an exciting and prosperous 2006 and will continue to strive to meet our valued customers needs in any way we can.

I wish you and your families a safe and enjoyable Christmas.

Systems Integrator Partners get together

Representatives from Schneider Electric’s Unity Alliance Systems Integrator program attended an event at Auckland’s Carlton Hotel on November 11th.

A number of subjects were presented and discussed, but the main focus was a presentation by the Unity Pro product manager Mr Eric Coudurier*.

He presented the Unity Pro develop-ment timelines for the next two years and the integrators were invited to provide feedback during an extensive Q&A session. Mr Coudurier stressed the importance of the feedback received from customers using the Unity Pro Software, and he will be taking a number of suggestions back to the R&D team for consideration.

After the event a number of the attendee’s got together for a meal at Liquid café in Auckland’s Viaduct Basin. SI’s who normally compete were able discuss common themes in a relaxed setting.

Steve Gallagher (NZ SI Channel Manager) is impressed with the quality of the SI’s in the program so far. “We want to expand the number of SI partners, but the partnership criteria must be based on quality and technical ability” We wish to thank our SI partners for their participation.

Unity Pro to expand reach

The next 12 months will be an exciting time in Unity Pro develop-ment with a new mid range PLC platform set to expand the user group enormously. Unity Pro S version will bring all the power of Unity Pro (5 IEC languages, simulator, etc) to bear in a best in class PLC hardware offer that will be very attractive to Contractors and OEM’s.

System Integrator Partners on website

A list of Systems Integrator Partners has been published on the Schneider Electric New Zealand Website. These SI’s have invested in training and skills development to ensure they get the most from Unity Pro and Telemecanique Automation & Control Products.

Schneider Electric signs an agreement to acquire Citect

Schneider Electric’s main Australian subsidiary (Schneider Australia) and Citect have signed a Merger Imple-mentation Agreement. Under this agreement, which remains conditional upon the satisfaction of a number of conditions, Schneider Australia will acquire all the shares in Citect, in a deal worth approx-imately $48 million. The deal is expected to be fi nalised early in the new year.

This merger will leverage the long-standing success of both companies. Schneider Electric will benefi t from Citect’s undisputed strengths in the SCADA market (Supervision, Control And Data Acquisition software) as well as its recent advance into the MES (Manufacturing Execution Systems) fi eld. Similarly, Citect will benefi t from Schneider Electric’s global reach and ability to deliver complete industrial automation solutions through its worldwide network of partners.

Big InvestmentWhile PDL’s vast new Christchurch headquarters may be a source of pride to its staff, within its walls is the beginning of a new approach to the production and assembly of electrical accessories.

The 10,000 square metre site and 5,500 square metre building is now home to a whole new internationally competitive production system along with a large research and development team working on product improvement and new products.

The new PDL manufacturing facilities ensure New Zealand produced electrical goods will continue to be available nationally and internationally, and Kiwi contractors will continue to gain from Schneider Electric’s ongoing investment in its product ranges.

PDL is one of New Zealand’s most experienced electrical fi tting manufacturers, entering homes shortly after the 1958 opening of the Atiamuri Hydro-electric power station and the fi rst commercial power generated at the Wairakei geothermal power project.

For many years PDL has been a key player in the electrical accessories market, but when Schneider Electric bought the company in 2001, some speculated that the brand would disappear.

What has happened instead is our increased investment in the PDL operation which may well herald even greater international success thanks to our world-wide connections.

Lean ManufacturingLean manufacturing challenges the conventional perception of production line effi ciency through an entirely different approach to product assembly. It delivers effi ciencies through a cellular approach instead of a line approach where people perform only one repetitive task. Under the new system people now perform varied tasks within a cell which makes their work a lot more interesting and also leads to greater productivity.

With the new ‘hands-on’ cellular workfl ow, components and product items spend less time in transit resulting in greater savings in production costs.

The reduction in process costs gives the company more leeway to manage pricing and exchange rate fl uctuations and counter rising material costs.

PDL’s new facility will now go a long way to ensure the full range of PDL products will continue to develop. To make sure we can still deliver all the product options you need, we have invested in the new building and in re-engineering our workfl ow. Our aim is to increase effi ciencies and contain costs so we can continue to provide you with over four thousand PDL product lines as we do today.

Our investment intentions are clear. PDL is a New Zealand operation and a New Zealand manufacturer. We are committed to manufacturing here and committed to building a new plant that can compete successfully not only in our local market, but on the world stage as well.

Our huge investment in the future of PDL in New Zealand is our assurance to you that we will continue to be there for you and will continue to innovate, design and make quality wiring accessories to help you grow your business.
