Two survey options, “Politicians” and “Rides and games”, each received only one vote.

David Burley stands in front of his company’s new Minnesota State Fair booth, the Blue Barn, which is part of the West End Mar-ket redevelopment that debuted this year at the Fair. Two Blue Barn items — the Blue Cheese & Corn Fritz and the Chicken in the Waf-fle — have been big hits.

A Colorado solar-energy player is expanding into the Twin Cities market, aiming to tap into an expected solar-development boom in Minnesota. Here are some details on the company.Company: SunShareHeadquarters: DenverFounded: 2011Founder and president: David Amster-OlszewskiBusiness: SunShare develops community solar projects, which are far smaller than the massive arrays you’ll find on desert landscapes. Such projects offer individual panels for sale or lease to customers. The model allows businesses and residential customers to get credit for solar power the

panels generate, without having to install and maintain panels.Plans for the Twin Cities: The company, which has about 15 employees in Colorado, expects to initially hire between three and five workers in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area. SunShare Founder and President Amster-Olszewski said he expects staff at the Twin Cities office to grow rapidly. It’s also scouting for land deals in Minnesota.

Amster-Olszewski said the company decided to jump into the Minnesota market partly because of a recent Public Utilities Commission ruling on how rates will be set for solar-garden projects. Minnesota competitors: Minneapolis-based Minnesota Community Solar, River Falls, Wis.-based Able Energy Co.

Who: Sun-protective clothing maker Coolibar Inc. named Kendra Reichenau its CEO.Background: Reichenau is a consumer-products industry veteran who was most recently president of Kohler Interiors’ McGuire Furniture Co. business, based in San Francisco. She previously held leadership posts at Gap Inc., Nordstrom and sunglasses company Oakley. What it means: Reichenau will be the first person to lead the business other than company founder and long-time top executive, John Barrow. He will remain at the St. Louis Park-based company in the role of president.

Hunhu Healthcare Inc., a startup developing technology that helps patients build an online support

network, has signed a licensing deal with Mayo Clinic.

The company and Rochester-based Mayo are teaming up to determine what mix of supporters best improve a patient’s wellness, said Hunhu co-found-er CEO Michael Emerson. Examples might include a role model who previously suf-fered from a similar health condition and recovered, a wellness coach, or friends and family members.

“We’re helping define those personas, what they look like and what they would need to do for your health care.” He add-ed that the Eden Prairie-based company is developing an algorithm for selecting a network based on a patient’s individual circumstances.

On the tech front, Hunhu plans to build mobile and Web applications that allow patients to communicate with their network through video chat and existing social networking tools like Facebook. The startup will pair those apps with a high-tech pendant it’s licensing from

Cambridge, Mass.-based BioSensics. The device features a small screen that can display health reminders to patients and alert their support network of problems like a fall.

Emerson, a former executive at Min-neapolis-based Preventice Inc., self-fund-ed the company so far. He plans to raise about $200,000 this fall. The company will seek a larger round of financing when it launches the technology in 2015.

Hunhu plans to charge a monthly fee

for the service and the pendant will cost about $100, Emerson said. The company is working through who will share in cover-ing those costs. Emerson said insurers or senior care facilities may be willing to pick

up part of the tab.Hunhu has two full-time employees

and will soon move to a small office in downtown Minneapolis.

First down: The Minnesota Vikings added another $20 million to the stadium budget on Aug. 22.

With that additional money, the team’s total contribution has increased by $48.5 million from when the stadium deal was approved. The Vikings initially were putting in $477 million to the project; it’s $526 million now. The total project cost stands at $1.024 bil-lion, up from $975 million originally. The public contribution remains at $498 million.

The Minnesota Sports Facilities Authority cited rising construction costs and changes in scope for the need for more money. Golden Valley-based Mortenson Construction is the manager of the project.

Second down: What’s not included in the $48.5 million is the $1.1 million to install “bird-safe” glass

that the Minnesota chapter of the Audubon Society is requesting. MSFA Chair Michele Kelm-Helgen said the bird-safe glass would impair lighting inside the stadium.

Third down:The MSFA selected SMG as operator of the stadium after months of meetings. SMG

is based in suburban Philadelphia and also operates NFL stadiums in New Orleans, Houston and Chicago. The base contract is for $6.75 million a year. SMG beat out Global Spectrum and AEG, which operates Target Center.

Fourth down:Metro Transit will seek bids to build an $8.7 million pedestrian bridge that would

take people over light rail tracks at the new stadium.

Elsewhere, Goodwill has gotten approval from the Shakopee City Coun-cil to open a traditional Goodwill store on 12th Avenue in Shakopee. A spokeswoman wouldn’t confirm the store’s opening and did not say what will become of the exist-ing Goodwill in Shakopee.

Wings FinancialWings Financial Credit Union is open-ing branches in Blaine, Eden Prairie and Woodbury before the end of the year. A fourth, in Savage, will open early in 2015. The Apple Valley-based credit union will have 15 metro locations and 205,000 members.

After 18 months, Canterbury Park Hold-ing Corp. and Running Aces Harness

Park have reached a deal to bring back simulcasting of each other’s races.

The two Twin Cities tracks had done business together for five years until early 2013, when they reached an impasse over their arrangement. Running Aces wanted to reduce its annual payments to Shakop-ee’s Canterbury, but Canterbury declined.

Starting this past weekend, people at Columbus’ Running Aces could bet on Canterbury races and vice versa. Running Aces patrons can now bet on races all over the U.S. as part of the deal.

“Bringing year-round simulcasting of not just harness racing but thoroughbred

and quarter-horse back to Running Aces has been our goal and we are pleased to re-engage with Canterbury Park to make it happen,” Running Aces General Man-ager Bob Farinella said in a press release.

On opposite ends of the metro, the two horse tracks get a cut of the simulcast money wagered on their live races. Both sides said the terms of the deal were simi-lar to the previous deal.

“I think it’s a victory for the horsemen and for racing in Minnesota,” said Canter-bury spokesman Jeff Maday. “If you live up in that direction and you want to bet on thoroughbreds, you have to drive 50 or 60 miles.”

Best Buy Co. Inc.’s second-quarter results were posted Tuesday.

The good: The company beat Wall Street’s predictions for earnings, posting adjusted earnings per share of 44 cents. Analysts had expected 31 cents per share. The bad: Sales were down from $9.27 billion to $8.9 billion. Analysts had expected $8.99 billion. The why: Best Buy attributed sales numbers to the increase in online shopping and relative lack of new must-have gadgets coming onto the market. CEO Hubert Joly expressed optimism that new ultrahigh definition TVs will come down in price and that the new iPhone release expected this fall will help drive traffic.

“We continue to see a shift in consumer behavior. Consumers are increasingly researching and buying online. As a result, traffic to our brick-and-mortar stores continues to decline.”

Aubry Walch, 33, and Kale Walch, 20, are the founders behind The Herbivorous Butcher, a vegan food producer that makes meatless Ital-ian sausage, pepperoni, barbecue ribs, jerky and bologna.

The company debuted at the Minneapolis Farm-ers Market in June and already has won a devot-ed following, among meat eaters, mostly. The pair say that more than half of their customers are nei-ther vegan nor vegetarian. Most of them want to reduce, but not eliminate, their meat consump-tion for environmental reasons or due to health concerns. Aubry Walch said many a burly biker has been won over by the jerky, which is choles-terol free.

The brother-sister duo hope to open a perma-nent location before the end of 2014. Here are a few questions we put to them as they were preparing their food for market.

How and why did you develop these recipes? Aubry: The recipes have been years and years in the making. I’m a strict vegetarian and [Kale] is vegan and we would always make fake meats for ourselves. We didn’t like the stuff in the store. We didn’t like frozen stuff. We are from Guam, so meat is really prominent on the table. There were always three or four during a meal. We don’t want to feel deprived.

What’s the secret to making a convincing vegan meat? Aubry: The Italian sausage is one of our best sellers. We call it our gateway meat, because

it’s really meaty and meat eaters can’t tell the difference. The uneven texture of the beans really gives the texture that creepy unevenness that meat has. Most of our products use vital wheat gluten, too. It’s magical. You can make any fake meat with it.

Kale: The real secret is in the cooking meth-ods, though.

Aubry: Yes, that’s true. Some stuff is steamed, some is baked. Some is steamed and baked. The ribs we braise before they go into the sauce.

What are your future plans? Aubry: We’d like to have a brick-and-mortar [location] before the end of the year. We want to do a full-scale vegan butcher shop with meats, cheeses, sauces and rubs and vegan breads to go with the hotdogs and hamburgers. We’ll also do some prepped foods like take-and-bake vegan chicken potpies. Things are a little hectic right now, but once they slow down we’ll start seriously looking for a space.

Two Twin Cities entrepreneurs have launched a new crowdfunding website that may perhaps give Kickstarter a run for its money.

Hoodstarter went live a month ago, after a year-and-a-half of development. Found-ers Justin Ley and David Berglund say the site has one goal: to fill vacant retail and restaurant spaces with viable businesses.

The idea came about after Ley’s wife, Erin, saw a discussion on an online forum about an empty storefront. Residents had plenty of ideas for the space, but no easy way to connect with an entrepreneur.

“I’m sure everyone has that moment. You see it, maybe it’s by your house or where you work,” Berglund said. “We didn’t know of a solution to that. So we put our minds to it.”

The two have ample experience in dig-ital development. Ley is director of prod-uct experience and design at Optum, an in-house digital-innovation lab at Min-netonka-based UnitedHealth Group Inc. Berglund is UnitedHealth’s entrepreneur

in residence.Hoodstarter attacks the problem from

both sides. Half the site is devoted to get-ting businesses ideas from residents, who can post what they would like to see in a specific location and vote on concepts.

The other half helps entrepreneurs

make a pitch to the locals and generate capital through crowdfunding.

Ley and Berglund say the site could help startups find further financing if they can demonstrate ample consumer demand. The duo also offer consulting services to entrepreneurs who use their site, helping

them refine their business plan and mar-keting strategy.

“We’re able to be really hands-on to our entrepreneurs. We can really provide ser-vices to them that they wouldn’t be able to get with Kickstarter,” Ley said. “We can make videos for people, for example.”

If a crowdfunding drive is successful, 95 percent of the money raised goes to the venture. Hoodstarter takes a 5 percent cut.

To get the site off the ground, the two have used their own personal savings, though they may consider soliciting inves-tors in the future.

“It’s tempting to say that we’ll bring in venture capital, but it’s been nice to have full control from the beginning,” Ley said. “It has allowed us the freedom to try and get this right.”

So far, the site has a few posts from resi-dents. The site has one entry from entre-preneurs Charles Stotts and Kacey White, who hope to open a restaurant called Locavore Eatery in Minneapolis’ Nokomis neighborhood.

COVER STORY

BY KATHARINE GRAYSON [email protected] 612-288-2106, @mspbjGrayson

Long popular with creative agency types and restaurateurs, Minneapolis’ North Loop neighborhood is now emerging as the go-to spot for another crowd: techies.

Venture-backed startups, growing soft-ware firms and West Coast companies are increasingly gobbling up office space in the trendy neighborhood, drawn to its historic buildings, varied dining options and ample public transit. Those amenities make it easier to attract and retain high-demand tech talent, while also coming in handy for impressing out-of-town inves-tors and clients, tech executives say.

Most recent lease deals are too small to make a big impact on the commercial real estate market in the near term. However, a critical mass of tech companies is good news for entrepreneurs seeking to raise the profile of the entrepreneurial scene.

“Innovative young startup compa-nies are looking at that area as the place to be downtown,” said John Brownlee, CEO of health care technology company Vidscrip.com, headquartered at 252 First Ave. N. “If you look at a place like Silicon Valley, there’s this connective tissue that links startups and talent and beta custom-ers and investors all together. Minneapolis doesn’t really have that yet, but it may be emerging in that kind of area.”

‘Nerds and creatives’The Colonial Warehouse Building, at 212 Third Ave N. (and pictured on this issue’s cover) has been particularly popular with tech companies in recent months. Home-grown startups Workface Inc. and Kidblog Inc. leased space in the building, which also houses retail tenants like Moose & Sadie’s Cafe and boutique Martin Patrick 3. Anaplan, a San Francisco tech firm that recently closed on $100 million in ven-ture capital, moved in earlier this sum-mer. And fast-growing Pleasanton, Calif.-based tech company Workday Inc. took over 9,000 square feet of space there in March, relocating from 3,500 square feet at the Butler Square building.

Workday, which raised $637 mil-

Minneapolis’ North Loop neighborhood isn’t the only place where cool techies hang out, of course. Here are some other hot spots and examples of companies based there:

ST. PAUL R GovDelivery Inc., makes applications that enable government agencies to distribute information to the public

R LeadPages, sells tools that help businesses build landing pages.

R thisClicks Inc., makes When I Work, a software application for managing hourly employees

UPTOWN MINNEAPOLIS R Code42, a maker of data-backup applications, is in Northeast Minneapolis for now. It will move to Uptown following construction of the $55 million MoZaic East office building.

R MentorMate, develops mobile applications

R Livefront, develops mobile applications

DOWNTOWN MINNEAPOLIS R SPS Commerce Inc., sells supply-chain management software

R JAMF Software, makes applications for managing Apple Inc. computers and devices

R RedBrick Health, develops technology and services for corporate-wellness programs

NORTHEAST MINNEAPOLIS R Sport Ngin, makes applications that sports organizations use to manage their websites

R SmartThings, develops technology for controlling household objects via smartphones. The company is headquartered in Palo Alto., Calif., and was recently bought by Samsung, but has still has an office here.

lion through an initial public offering in 2012, picked the North Loop partly for the area’s vibe, and also because it’s close to clients and professional-services firms, said Mike Stankey, president and chief operating officer for the human-resourc-es software company. Stankey has lived in the Twin Cities since the 1980s, but spent most of his career leading Silicon Valley companies.

“To be successful in building a tech community in Minnesota, you have to have a collection of companies to col-laborate with. It’s not just tech compa-nies, but we need access to partners like

Deloitte. There are synergies by having these different types of organizations closer together.”

Kidblog, which makes classroom blog-ging applications, is one of several startups that moved to the neighborhood after out-growing CoCo’s co-working space in down-town Minneapolis’ Grain Exchange build-ing. Kidblog shares an office with other small tech companies, including Fargo, N.D.-based app developer Myriad Mobile.

Myriad picked the North Loop for its first Twin Cities office because it had a good mix of restaurants, breweries and creative agencies, said Matt Pacyga, vice

president of business development. The firm, which opened the office in March, has four employees in the Twin Cities and expects to expand its staff over time.

“All the nerds and creatives are gath-ering around drinking and eating — it’s a perfect neighborhood,” Pacyga said.

Sharing spaceOther startups are taking Myriad’s and Kidblog’s shared-office approach. Vid-scrip, which makes technology that phy-sicians use to create and share short vid-eos, splits its 6,000-square-foot office space with other health care technology

companies, including online-diagnosis firm Zipnosis Inc. The strategy helps the businesses save money while giving each enough room to have their own identities, Brownlee said.

Meanwhile, tech startups like Apruve, which recently moved out of CoCo to But-ler Square, are subleasing small chunks of other companies’ office space. Apruve CEO and Founder Michael Noble picked the location partly because it’s still close to CoCo.

There also are formal co-working spaces in the neighborhood, including one ded-icated to young tech companies, Startup Venture Loft. The space plans to expand with a move from 718 Washington Ave. N. to larger digs at 211 First St. N. this fall. Peter Kane, co-founder of the co-working space, likes the area partly because he sees a lot of startups gravitating to it.

“Everyone’s been waiting to see where the entrepreneurial community is going to end up in terms of a neighborhood. For a long time, a lot of people thought it was going to be in Northeast, but much more of it has moved to the North Loop.”

Adding engineersTech companies that made the move to the North Loop say it’s paid off, especially when it comes to recruiting.

OptiMine Software Inc., which makes advertising-analytics applications, has doubled its software-engineering staff since moving to 300 First Ave. N. this spring.

“Our ability to attract technical talent has been superb,” CEO Thomas Donnelly said. He declined to disclose the size of the engineering team.

Donnelly also likes that the space has an open-floor plan and said the area reminds him of the South of Market dis-trict in San Francisco.

Software firm Calabrio Inc. moved to the Wyman Building last year, leasing 30,000 square feet. The 173-employee company expected the location to appeal to young workers, but CEO Tom Good-manson said he’s been surprised by how popular it is among all ages.

“The unintended benefit was even the 40- or 50-somethings would rather come

down here than the suburbs.”Goodmanson added that he likes being

close to other tech companies, such as 8thBridge (which was recently sold) and Code42.

Health IT company Ability Network has been in the neighborhood longer than both OptiMine and Calabrio, moving to the North Loop in 2010. The company leases about 50,000 square feet in But-ler Square, a location that’s been popular with employees and works well for enter-taining out-of-state clients, said Executive Vice President Bud Meadows.

“It’s eclectic. It has a great vibe. There all these really neat restaurants … that show this is more of a trendy city, as opposed to very stodgy. It has a youthful appearance in an area with old buildings. If you go down to the Ameriprise building, it’s this great big glass building, but it’s not very unique. Every city has a big glass build-ing, but not many have this area.” NANCY KUEHN

10 MINNEAPOLIS/ST. PAUL BUSINESS JOURNAL

Rulon Stacey joined Fairview Health Services as president and CEO last November, following two turbulent years at the Minneapolis health

system. He previously was president of University of Colorado Health, and served as CEO of Colorado’s Poudre Valley Health System for 16 years. During his tenure at Poudre Valley, Stacey helped expand the provider from one hospital in one state, to more than 24 facilities in three states. The U.S. Secretary of Commerce last year appointed Stacey to serve as chairman of the board of overseers for the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award.

Stacey recently sat down with the Business Journal to talk about health care. The interview has been edited for length and clarity.

Some say health systems getting bigger drives up costs, others say it’s necessary to lower costs and provide better care. Where do you stand? Bigger costs more if it disproportionately dominates a market. Bigger is not in and of itself bad, monopolies are bad. Bigger is more efficient. If I figure out how to save a dollar on a procedure, and save a dollar on that procedure 1,000 times throughout my system, I’ve saved $1,000. If I do it 10,000 times, I’ve saved $10,000.

What’s your approach to building a workplace culture? I tell employees here that it’s important in the provision of clinical care that this be the single best job they’ve had in their life. I give them my personal cell phone number and say, “If this isn’t the best place you’ve ever worked, you’ve got to call me and tell me.” We’re moving from an inpatient-driven system to a value-driven system. It would be disingenuous to suggest that transition is easy. It’s not, and it puts a lot of pressure on employees. They’re in a tough spot right now and I can feel that when I talk to them. I want to be mindful of that.

Do you have a growth strategy for Fairview? We are well into our strategic plan. There is no scenario where we get bigger for the sake of getting bigger. We are evaluating scenarios where we stay the same size or where we get bigger. We’re going through a determined and logical process to identify what is the right makeup of the organization and how do we take that foundation and grow it to give people the best value for their health care. The future of health care is all about value.

Fairview is part owner of health insurer PreferredOne. Do you plan to stay in the insurance business? One of the things that attracted me to Fairview was its access across the spectrum, from the health insurance premium dollar coming into the system to the opportunity to provide care. If we’re able to control cost in a way that increases quality, and we have access to the premium dollar, I think we can provide better value to employers. We can go to a U.S. Bank and say we’ve got it all. I think that’s a differentiating factor that Fairview brings. We’re actively putting together the strategy that will allow us to do that. That’s what successful health organizations will have to do in the future.

How has Fairview’s relationship with the University of Minnesota changed during your tenure? I would like to think it’s better than it was, but I haven’t observed it personally as being poor. People want very badly to work collaboratively and we are working hard to make that happen. There’s a new dean at the University of Minnesota medical school and that man is smarter than I’ll ever be in my life — he’s not pretentious, he’s approachable and wise. I think if we’re ever going to make this work, now is our chance. Everybody is prepared and everybody is engaged.

In 2009, Z Systems Inc. employee Adam Colt sug-gested the audiovisual company showcase local filmmaking talent by launching a film festival.

The event would bring together its ven-dors and the creative people who could use Z Systems’ services. Five years later, the Z-Fest Film Festival is going strong. Z Systems owner John Zdechlik talked to the Business Journal about what Z-Fest entails and why it’s important.

How big was Z-Fest in it’s first few years, and how has it changed? Twenty teams entered in 2009, and the 2014 event featured 50 teams. Each year is a little different from previous years. We have always set controls, or certain criteria, that each film must include, and none are used more than once. This ensures the ideas are fresh and the films are new every year. We’ve also expanded the fest to include an awards ceremony at the end that sort of mimics the Oscars.

What does a typical festival include? There are several steps to the process. For the 2014 festival, promotion began in

October 2013 and registration opened in late October. Scripts and final registrations were due at the end of January. Next, we had a kick-off party to go over contest rules and get everyone on the same page.

Teams then submitted film trailers and production stills in February, and voting occurred in late February and early March. Finally, two separate screenings were held — one screening that showed all of the films and then, on another date, a screening of just the top 10 films at the Mall of America, called “The Best of Fest.” Immediately following that was the awards ceremony and party.

What’s the overall goal of Z-Fest? The goal has always been to highlight completely original films; all the films are created specifically for Z-Fest. We want to promote local talent and give them the opportunity to see their visions realized in high-definition, on

the big screen. Additionally, we aim to elevate the quality of film and video production in our local community. Besides that, we want to introduce people to entertainment that they can’t get elsewhere, that they might not find just watching cable TV or going to the movie theater.

No. 18 on The List, Alchemy Sound & Vision, Minneapolis, specializes in mak-ing spaces look good with its LED lighting products and installation.

Owner Paul Larson says, “Designers and architects are now regularly using focal light design elements in bars and restaurants that require coordination between Alchemy and themselves to cre-ate the ‘wow’ that the client is looking for. Our programmable, color-changing LED lighting systems are commonly used to create a look and feel for a venue that cannot be created in any other way. The

systems we install can be as simple as color-changing LED lights underneath a bar for around $500, or complex exteri-or lighting packages for patio areas that can exceed $30,000. Areas we are regu-larly working with designers and archi-tects include liquor displays, ambient wall wash lighting, waterfalls, building exte-riors, stairwells, soffits, signage, custom design elements, dance floors and stages. For example, we used different LED light-ing to create the visual focal element on the sails in the patio area of Bar Louie in Minnetonka.”

Jamil Ford of Mobilize Design and Architecture at one of his firm’s projects: Hennepin County’s Human Services hub building on Plymouth Avenue

BY COLLEEN MURPHY Contributing writer

After being laid off at a previous job, Jamil Ford started Mobilize Design and Architecture four years ago to

revitalize North Minneapolis one building at a time.

Ford and his business partner, David Witt, have worked on a number of proj-ects in the neighborhood, including a bike shop, a 45-unit affordable housing development and the Minneapolis Pub-lic Schools’ West Broadway Avenue head-quarters. MDA expects to pull in $260,000 in revenue this year, more than double the amount in 2013.

“A lot of properties in North Minneapo-lis get covered in paint — things that aren’t really focused on the better aesthetics you would have in other communities,” Ford said. “We wanted to make projects that really stand out and allow the residents

and business owners to be proud of where they’re from and give them facilities they can look at and be proud of what’s hap-pening. We want to be part of that change.”

Ford also has partnered with West Broadway Avenue-based Juxtaposition Arts, which employs and trains about 60 high school students, to teach them about architecture and urban planning.

After attending North High School and growing up in the area, it’s just another way he hopes to give back.

“I look like many of the people who

live here. From a professional standpoint, I want the opportunity to allow youth, as well as people within the community, to see something that is really unheard of in terms of our profession in architecture,” Ford said.

Roger Cumming, Juxtaposition Arts’ artistic director, said Ford’s connection to North Minneapolis helps MDA work with local business and community groups. “They have a big impact. … They’re inte-grated into the community.”

This spring, MDA worked with real estate developer The Ackerberg Group to finish renovating the Hennepin County Human Services hub, a $5 million proj-ect on Plymouth Avenue that brings ser-vices like food assistance, drivers’ license renewals and social services closer to the families who use them. There are six hub facilities open or in the works.

Several years ago, the building was a cinderblock structure on the corner of

Plymouth Avenue and Seventh Street. Now the 26,000-square-foot space has a light and airy feeling with skylights and floor-to-ceiling windows.

“They took a building that people had probably never even noticed and made it look [modern],” said Hennepin County Commissioner Linda Higgins, who advo-cated for the project.

MDA is currently working with Ryan Cos. US Inc. to design skyways for the new Minnesota Vikings stadium and is in talks to help renovate several schools in Minneapolis.

Looking ahead, Ford says he hopes to work on larger development proj-ects involving swaths of the community instead of on one building at a time.

SUCCESSION PLANNINGWhat You Need To Know As You Transition Out and Who Needs to Be A Part of The Plan.

SEPTEMBER 16, 20147:30a.m.-9:30a.m.Windows on Minnesota | 80 South 8th Street | 50th Floor | Minneapolis, MN 55402

There’s going to be an unprecedented transfer of wealth and control in the coming years as Boomers transition their companies to the next generation. During this discussion we will address some of the following questions:

• How to structure companies to make sure they survive the transition and the next generation, how to minimize the tax hit on the transfer.

• How to pick and groom your successor, or how to sell your company if there’s no one in line (either before or after you retire) to make sure your company and its employees do well.

• How to best manage the emotional roller coaster before and after you exit.

• How will this transition affect your brand preservation?
