Things to do…Mill About Take a tour of Laconia’s Belknap Mill, the oldest unaltered brick textile mill in the nation. Built in 1823, a historically themed gift shop offers items like old-fashioned toys, folk art, jams, coffees and textile products. The mill is part of Laconia’s historic district, where the Riverwalk, a one-mile walking trail along the Winnipesaukee River, takes you past other historic sites like the Busiel Mill, the Laconia Public Library, the Masonic Temple and the Laconia Passenger Station.

Explore a Castle! Castle in the Clouds in Moultonborough sits high in the Ossipee Mountain Range and offers dramatic panoramic views from “the clouds.” Built in 1914, the Arts and Crafts style mansion is a stunning architectural specimen, but the castle also offers 45 miles of hiking trails on 5,000 acres to explore with a short walk that leads to a cascading waterfall.

Go wild! The Squam Lakes Natural Science Center in Holderness is part zoo, part educational facility and ALL about the wild. The center features animal exhibits and trails, even an underground exhibit (where you can travel down a human-size chipmunk burrow). Meet their resident mountain lion, black bears, a bobcat, owls and other raptors. If you’re spending some time in the lakes region with children, this is a perfect stop!

Meredith NH: Relax at the Lake The Meredith NH Area is truly the heart of the Lakes Region and serves as the latchkey to New England’s majestic White Mountains. A tourist favorite for generations, Meredith is nestled among NH’s largest lakes: Lake Winnipesaukee, Squam Lake, Winnisquam, Waukewan, Kanasatka, Wicwas, Pemigewasset, Winona, and Newfound Lake. Meredith’s historic old fashioned charm combines with the natural beauty of lakes and mountains in the quaint towns of Meredith, Center Harbor, Moultonborough, Sandwich, Holderness, Weirs Beach, Gilford, Bristol, Wolfeboro, and New Hampton.

Funspot in Laconia, NH is the largest arcade in the world, founded in 1952 by Bob Lawton who still works there every day. Funspot provides quality entertainment in an atmosphere right for the whole family and its array of fun is continually growing.Funspot offers over 600 games, including 300 classic arcade games, a 20 lane ten pin & candlepin bowling center, cash bingo, outdoor & indoor mini-golf, a restaurant, a tavern and more!

The number of miles of shoreline on Lake Winnipesaukee. The lake is 28 miles long at its longest point and has a driving circumference of 63 miles. 240www.nhlovescampers.com | 3938 | 2018 New Hampshire Camping Guide

PROPANE SAFETY AT CAMPGROUNDS

Information provided by the NATIONAL LP-GAS ASSOCIATION• If an RV has been idle and unused for some time, make some

safety checks before using the LP-gas appliances.• Check the entire vehicle, especially the propane system, for

possible tampering. Make sure the propane tanks are properly secured. If the cylinders are not mounted on the vehicle, it is recommended that they be placed on level ground, on a firm foundation.

• Check all vents (including the regulator vent) and combustion air intakes to make sure they are clear, and contain no restrictions such as foreign matter, bird nests, mouse nests, or mud-dauber wasp structures.

• Clean away any debris from around burners and pilot lights such as burnt match sticks, bits of food, etc.

• Before turning on the gas at the tanks, be sure all appliance valves are turned OFF, and check to determine which pilot lights must be lit. After the gas has been turned on, be sure all pilots are lit.

• As a precaution to determine if any leaks have developed, give your RV a “sniff” test, do a soap bubble test at all connections, or contact your local LP-gas supplier to perform a pressure test on your system.

It could save your life!BRAKE FOR MOOSE

Today, in spite of a limited annual hunt, moose are found throughout the state, and so are moose-car collisions. We want you to enjoy

traveling in New Hampshire. Here are some things you

need to know to reduce the likelihood of serious injury and

extensive damage to your vehicle.• The average moose weighs 1,000 lbs! That’s 4 times

the size of a big trophy white-tailed deer.• The hood of your vehicle fits neatly under the belly of

the moose. • Moose are a safety concern primarily from May to

October.• Don’t assume the moose has seen you and will wait

until you pass to cross the road.

WINTER CAMPINGWinter camping isn’t just for skiers and snowmobilers anymore. Each year, an increasing number of campers are winterizing their equipment so they can enjoy a weekend or a vacation in the outdoors at a time of year when the campgrounds are quiet and uncrowded.

Many campgrounds are open for your winter camping experience. Check the Grids and Listings in the Region section for additional information.

Enjoy winter in New Hampshire...ski, skate, sled, snowshoe, or just relax in a quiet campground.

CAMPING SAFETYFor... Kids!1. Toasting marshmallows is fun but be careful because they are very

hot inside.2. Let your folks start grills and campfires.3. Don’t forget... to look both ways when riding your bikes or scooters

around the campground.4. Always have a grownup with you when you’re near the water.5. If you get lost in the woods make a lot of noise. STAY IN ONE PLACE.6. Fireworks and sparklers are exciting but you should only use them

with a grownup7. Making new friends can be the best part about camping but

remember to ALWAYS... ALWAYS let your folks know where you are. 8. Playgrounds are great but treat things with respect and follow the

safety rules.9. Animals are cute and fun to watch. But be careful you don’t get too

close. A scared animal could be DANGEROUS.

Ten Essentials Items you should carry on every trip:

Please Do Not feed the animals, their survival depends upon their ability to forage for themselves. Observe them, enjoy their company, but always remember that YOU are a visitor in THEIR HOME.
