Dear Fellow Scouters, Welcome to the Course Catalog for the University of Scouting and Commissioner College 2016! Our staff has been hard at work preparing for this day of training and we are glad that you are a part of it. The University of Scouting & Commissioner College will run from 8:00 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. Please review the table below for class times. Each participant will receive a packet containing a printed personalized schedule of classes (including room assignments), a classroom map, lunch ticket and University of Scouting patch. From 8:25 a.m. to 8:45 a.m., an opening ceremony will be conducted. Short welcoming and inspirational messages, pertinent information and other last minute details will be addressed at this time. Classes are 50 minutes in duration with 10 minutes between classes. Classes will be available during periods 1, 2, 3, 6, 7 and 8. We want to stress also that courses offered at the University of Scouting & Commissioner College

are open to all Scouters. Everyone is welcome and encouraged to take courses in all categories.

What you need to know:

-Registration will only be accepted online at www.trcscouting.org/university

-Participants may register for courses in any of the colleges. For example, a Cub Scout

Leader may register for a Boy Scout or General Studies of a Venturing course. Our goal is for

Scouters to increase their knowledge by experiencing the different areas of the Scouting

program

-Location: Shaker High School (445 Watervliet-Shaker Rd., Latham, NY 12110)

Cost of Registration: Registration is $25.00 which includes lunch. Online Registration runs

from January 13th through March 12th. Be sure to register before March 7 to avoid the Late-

Fee Registration of $30.

Food: Lunch will be catered by Dinosaur Barbeque. Refreshments will be available in the

morning. Please let us know when you register if you have any dietary needs or requests (ie-

allergies, vegetarian option, etc…). We will do our best to accommodate your needs, just let

us know!!

Midway: We will have a Midway Exhibit area set up for various displays of interest to Scouters.

Dress Code: BSA Uniform is preferred for this event.

What to bring: Pen and Paper for notes, desire to learn, and bring someone who has never

attended the University of Scouting before!!

While some positions such as Den Leaders for each rank have logical leaders from year to year others are not so easy to fill and require a succession plan that is worked out a year or more in advance. 2

463 Service Projects: Service projects are not just for older scouts. Starting January 1, 2016, the service project will be required for all rank advancements. Service projects equal service hours and service hours are reported JTE. find out more about service hours, resources, the paperwork that is used to track the hours and what is acceptable for a project. 7

464 Strategic Planning: Making it real - Understanding the Council Strategic Plan at the Unit level. The foundation of the Council Strategic Plan is to make the Twin Rivers Council the leading youth organization in the region. 511 Cubmaster & Asst. Cubmaster Specific Training (3 Period Course): This Course will provide Cubmasters and Assistant Cubmasters with the basic information they need to conduct successful Pack Meetings. The course is based on the seven parts of a pack meeting. 6 thru 8

512 Den Leader Position Specific Training (3 Period Course): This course will provide Cub Scout Den Leaders with the basic information they need to conduct successful Den Meetings. Den Leaders who complete this course and Youth Protection Training are considered "trained" as Tiger, Wolf, Bear and Webelos Den Leaders. 6 thru 8

513 Charter Organization Rep. Training (2 Period Course): This course will provide Charter Organization Representatives with the basic information they need to be a successful representative for both the Unit and Charter Organization. 7 & 8

900 Commissioner Basic Training (3 Period Course): (BCS100) This course covers all the areas a Commissioner needs to service a unit. It is required for all new commissioners or those not previously trained. 1 thru 3

902 Practical Solutions to Common Unit Needs: (BCS 105) The Commissioner's primary purpose is to help units succeed, develop a better program and operate effectively. They are frequently called on to assist with concerns that could hinder the unit's success. This course will allow you to respond to these concerns. 7

904 Commissioner's Priorities: (BCS 106) Know your units - our No. 1 priority. Understanding the environment in which the unit operates is what this segment covers. 7

906 Commissioners and Advancements: (BCS 130) The course describes why and what a Commissioner should know about advancement. A Commissioner should be prepared to assist a unit with basic questions advancement and know the District and Council Chairs and how to contact them when needed. 6

908 Orienting and Training Commissioners: (MCS313) This session covers all aspects of Commissioner training including new Commissioner orientation. Basic training, Arrowhead Honor, the Commissioner's Key and continuing education along with a variety of classroom techniques. 1

910 Administration of Roundtable Staff: (MCS 314) The Roundtable Commissioner's responsibility is to recruit, train and motivate a staff. It includes steps for successful recruiting of Roundtable Staff. 8

912 District Commissioner Basics: (MCS 319) The District Commissioner recruits, trains and directs an adequate team of Commissioners to assure that all Packs, Troops, Teams and Crews of the District have a quality program so the young people will remain in the scouting program. 2

914 Valuing Diversity - Generation X: (CED 721) A Commissioner's primary purpose is to help units succeed, develop a better program, and operate effectively. Frequently Commissioners are called upon to assist units with concerns that could hinder the unit's success. Participants of this course will become familiar with how to respond to these concerns using Commissioner's helps and early warning signs. 3

916 Reaching the Next Multicultural Generation: (CED 723) Reaching the Next Multicultural Generation is most important to carry on the BSA movement. The main objective of the study was to gain a better understanding to the needs and desires of the African American, Hispanic/Latino American and Asian American populations in relation to their partition in youth organizations in general and Boy Scouts of America in particular. 6

918 Commissioner's Tools: For Commissioners, replaces the old Unit Tracking Visit reports. It is required for all Commissioners if not already completed in an online seminar. 8
