Twinned with the Parish of Embalenhle in South Africa “Young people need to be loved and they need to know that they are loved.” Those are the words of St John Bosco, Patron Saint of the Young, and they are very fitting for this week, which begins with Education Sunday and continues with the Feast of St John Bosco this Thursday, 31 st January. They are particularly appropriate as we have recently hosted 26 young people helping on the tour of the St John Bosco Relics. This was a magnificent experience, and to everyone involved thank you! St John Bosco had a vision for working with young people which is at the heart of our parish vision; he lived a model where family, school, parish and playground were interlinked, and where the spirit of each infused the other. Young people need and deserve a family home where there is trust, kindness, warmth and care. They need and deserve schools where they learn from passionate teachers, and where their knowledge is not only factual, but character forming. Today we give thanks for the dedication of all those who work in our schools: De La Salle, St Teresa’s, St Anne Line Infant and St Anne Line Junior. To choose a Catholic education for your child is to help form their faith and character in powerful, life changing ways, with life-long effects. In the parish, we are delighted to support families and schools, and our parish life is enriched by the young people who bring energy, joy, hope and challenge. We are delighted, too, to provide the “playground” for young people through our “Hall of Dreams” and “Field of Dreams” projects, where the young serve the young another dimension which St John Bosco encouraged and inspired. Today we also celebrate the creation of the Basildon Catholic Collegiate Trust our four schools, and our parish, working together ever more closely and for the good of all. “In the church of today, young people are the hope of tomorrow,” said Pope John Paul II when he visited Britain in 1982. Thirty years later, we know that remains true, and we pray for every young person and every child, for their families, and for the teachers, teaching assistants, school governors, school chaplains, caterers, cleaners and all the office and support staff who do so much tremendous work in our schools. “Young people need to be loved and they need to know that they are loved.” Those are the words of St John Bosco, Patron Saint of the Young, and they are very fitting for this week, which begins with Education Sunday and continues with the Feast of St John Bosco this Thursday, 31st January. They are particularly appropriate as we have recently hosted 26 young people helping on the tour of the St John Bosco Relics. This was a magnificent experience, and to everyone involved – thank you!

We are delighted, too, to provide the “playground” for young people through our “Hall of Dreams” and “Field of Dreams” projects, where the young serve the young – another dimension which St John Bosco encouraged and inspired.

Today we also celebrate the creation of the Basildon Catholic Collegiate Trust – our four schools, and our parish, working together ever more closely and for the good of all.

St John Bosco, Patron Saint of the Young, Pray for us.

New Headteacher for St Teresa’s – Mrs Nuala Cashell

The Governors and staff of St Teresa’s school are delighted to announce the appointment of Mrs Nuala Cashell as the new Headteacher of St Teresa’s Catholic Primary School. Mrs Cashell will take up her post early in the Summer term. She brings great experience to the school, including the fact that, while a Deputy Head, she was chosen by her Local Authority to become interim head to cover maternity leave at a local school. Within the Diocese she has worked at St Winifrede’s, Manor Park, and Holy Cross, South Ockendon.

On Education Sunday, this is a very good moment to acknowledge the tremendous work that the interim Senior Leadership Team have done at St Teresa’s since October. It has been a great testament to the support of the “Catholic Family” of schools in the Diocese, as well as other local schools, as firstly Mr Peter O’Kane (Holy Family, Benfleet) and currently Mr Chris Birtles (St Thomas of Canterbury, Grays) served as interim Headteachers. They have been supported by Mrs Paula Barningham (St Patricks, Collier Row) and Mrs Jenny Hakin (Millhouse Junior, Basildon) as Acting Deputies. Alongside them Mr Martin Larrett (St Anne Line Juniors) has served as consultant Headteacher and St Anne Line Infants, St Anne Line Juniors and De la Salle have all provided support in a whole variety of ways to create extra opportunities for the children. To you all, who have given many hours of encouraging and inspiring help, thank you.

We offer our warmest congratulations to Mrs Cashell, and we look forward to the months ahead.

Afro Caribbean Night. This is being run by the Knights of St Columba and will be held on 9th February at Holy Trinity Hall from 7.00 – 10.30pm in aid of The BCCS. Tickets: Adults £5, Children/Concessions £2.50. African and Caribbean food available. Bring your own drinks. Any donations of African or Caribbean food or raffle prizes will be most welcome. Parish Thank You Party – Save the date. Throughout the year nearly two hundred people give time, energy and dedicated service in many, many ways. The parish would not be the vibrant, welcoming and varied community that it is without you. It is impossible to list the different groups and individuals without missing someone, so you are invited if you give time weekly or monthly to any activity or service in the parish which is over and beyond attending Mass. Please come to Holy Trinity Hall on Saturday February 16th, 7.30 – 9.30pm for drinks, refreshments and music. If you are not yet involved but you would like to be, please contact your local area PA who can chat with you and link you up with organisers of different groups.

Vocations Discernment Group – open to all aged 17 – 30, meeting in Brentwood on Friday 1st February. This is a flourishing group of young adults who are more deeply considering their vocation, particularly to Priesthood and the Religious Life. Being part of the group does not mean any commitment – it is a chance to hear interesting and varied vocation stories, along with others of similar age. The speaker for February is Sr Walburga, who recently made her first vows with the Benedictine Community in Minster, Kent. Come and hear how a young woman of the 21st Century discerned joining a community with a tradition almost unchanged for well over 1000 years. The evening also includes a fish and chip supper, and time for prayer. For full information, contact Fr Dominic, [email protected] or 01268 281732.

The Catholic Education Service (CES) and Caritas Social Action Network (CSAN) are part of the Fair and Square Campaign, which aims to ensure a free school meal for every child who needs one. Free school meals are essential for children’s health and education, and have helped to lift over 140,000 families out of poverty. However, 1.2 million children living in poverty currently do not receive them.

The Fair and Square petition which will be delivered to 10 Downing Street early in February already has more than 34,000 signatures. You can add your name at www.childrenssociety.org.uk/fairandsquare
