Twist and Slouch is a simple hat pattern with a stretchy brim

designed to “hug” the wearers head and keep out the chilly

Pacific Northwest winds. The crown has very little decreasing

and is therefore a great option for the beginning knitter.

Don’t be intimidated by the Right Twist technique, it is

simple to do and creates a cable like effect.

Size: Adult (20-23 inch head circumference)

Gauge: 4 st/inch in stockinette

Yarn: Knit Picks City Tweed HW (any heavy worsted weight

yarn would work)

Needles: US 8 & US 9 16 inch circular

Notions: stitch marker, darning needle, scissors, measuring

device

Abbreviations:

RT: Right Twist. Knit the next two stitches together

(do not pull them off the needle), then knit the first stitch (farthest right stitch) by itself and

slide the two stitches off the left needle onto the right needle.

K2tog: knit the next two stitches together through the front loops

St st: Stockinette Stitch, when knitting in the round KNIT every stitch to create your fabric.

*___*: repeat instructions between *’s for the entire round.

K2: Knit two stitches

P1: Purl 1 stitch

Pattern:

Cast On 78 stiches with US 8 needle using the long tail cast on method, place stitch marker. Begin Mock

Cable Stitch Pattern, passing stitch marker as you go, and continue until piece measures 4 inches from

cast on edge.

Ending on row two of the Mock Cable pattern, switch to US 9 circular needles for the remainder of the

hat. Begin knitting in St stitch and continue until piece measures 11 inches from cast on edge.

Decreasing for the Crown:

At the beginning of the next round, decrease by K2tog around (39 stitches). Knit one round. K2tog

around again (19 stitches). Cut 8 inch tail, using darning needle, thread the tail through the remaining

19 stitches, tie off the tail and weave in all ends.

If you prefer an even slouchier hat, continue to knit longer than the 11” before decreasing for the

crown. If you prefer a less slouchy hat, begin decreases when the piece measures shorter than 11” from

cast on.

Thank you so much for knitting my pattern. I hope you love your Twist and Slouch hat as much as I love

mine. If you have questions about the pattern feel free to email me @ [email protected].
