Piatti Quartet The Turnage Connection Mark-Anthony Turnage is one of the most admired and widely-performed composers of his generation. He stud- ied with Oliver Knussen and John Lambert in London and Gunther Schuller in Tanglewood and his works skillfully blend classical and jazz idioms, modernism and tradition. String Quartet No. 1: Twisted Blues with Twisted Ballad 23’ Commissioned by the Wigmore Hall for the Belcea Quartet and co-commissioned with KolnMusik, Het Concertgebouw Am- sterdam and Wiener Konzerthaus. Recorded by the Piatti Quartet and released on the Champs Hill label, September 2018. Reviews of the Piatti’s recording of Twisted Blues with Twisted Ballad: “The Piatti play [the Turnage] with absolute authority and conviction. A most enterprising and rewarding programme.” Andrew Farach-Colton, Gramophone “This excellent album traces an intriguing path through modern British works for quartet… The Piatti Quartet are on ferociously fine form.” Kate Wakeling, BBC Music Magazine, 4* String Quartet No. 2: Contusion 14’ Commissioned by the Wigmore Hall, The Radcliffe Trust and NMC Recordings. Revised version premiered by the Piatti Quartet 2016. Recorded by the Piatti Quartet on the NMC Label, tbc release. Prize for best performance at the Wigmore International SQ Competition. “It felt as if the Piatti Quartet truly drew a unique and pristine interpretation of the piece, giving it an otherworldly feeling that made the initially jarring and disturbing nature turn transcendental and strangely life-affirming. I hope, and feel, that the interpretation of Contusion given by the Piatti Quartet will be the definitive one.” Eugene Broad, RCS Review String Quartet No. 3: Shroud 25’ Commissioned by the Emerson Quartet and premiered in 2016. String Quartet No.4 : Winter’s Edge 22’ Commissioned by the Piatti Quartet, and co-commissioned with the Wigmore Hall and Flagey Festival. World premiere: Flagey Festival, 19th March 2019 UK premiere: Wigmore Hall, 25th May 2019 “We have had a very strong connection with Mark-Anthony Turnage for some years now. We have made the premiere recordings of his first two quartets, Twisted Blues with Twisted Ballad and Contusion for the Champs Hill and NMC labels respectively, and have now commissioned his fourth quartet, Winter’s Edge. Our connection started in 2015 when we performed his second quartet Contusion as the set work at the Wigmore International String Quartet Competition. We were subsequently awarded the Sidney Griller prize for the best performance of this work, and from there our personal journey developed with Mark.” Piatti Quartet
