African and European Traditions MeetThe music of the fife and drum bands of the Mississippi Delta region is a unique form, created in early America asAfro-Caribbean and European music fused to re-create old minstrel tunes, spirituals, and heavily improvised instrumental pieces in a new image.

Some musicologists call it a form of the blues, and some claim it predates the blues and influenced the development of that form. But whatever its roots, fife and drum band musicis a living tradition passed down from the old to the young, played and danced to at the large informal "picnics" of the hill country of Mississippi.

Traveling Through the Jungle: Fife and Drum Band Music from the Deep South This is a collection of 28 traditional pieces, 5 of which were recordedin 1942 and the rest in 1969/1970, representing various artistsand bands including some rare recordings from Georgia.

C oopermanTraditional fifes fol-low the traditionaland historic form

of the instrument. Thesefifes are made of a singlepiece of wood with a simple cylindrical bore and six tone holes; severalnotes of the chromaticscale require half holes. The visual design of ourTraditional model woodfifes is patterned on museum pieces, and thissimple shape with theswell at the mouth holeand a soft taper to thefoot is appropriate for 18thand 19th century represen-tations. The Traditionalmodel fife is appealing forits marvelous performanceas a bright, loud fieldinstrument with a powerfulupper register, as well asits suitability for early musicand historical reenactmentperformances.

CoopermanTraditional Fifes,Professional ModelsWe make our TraditionalProfessional models of thefinest instrument graderosewood and grenadilla. Each fife is provided witha wooden slider-lid boxalong with a cleaning stickand cork grease.

CoopermanTraditional Fifes,Student ModelsWe make Student Modelfifes in both persimmonwood and black FDAapproved plastic.

The persimmon wood fifeis a visual match in shapeto the Professional Models, with the wood very lightbrown to blonde in color,as compared to the warm red/brown of therosewood or the strikingblack/brown of thegrenadilla. Persimmon fifesare packaged in a foldingbox; plastic fifes are packaged in a poly bag.

T hese contemporary styleConcert Fifes aredesigned with a piccolostyle bore and up to 10

tone holes, providing for animprovement in intonation andease of play of the chromaticnotes, relative to the TraditionalModel fifes. While a six hole fifewill play every note that a tenhole fife will, the addition of theextra holes allows the fifer to playwithout half-hole fingerings. Allfifes are crafted of the finest instru-ment grade exotic hardwoods, with sterling silver rings. Each fifeis provided with a wooden slider-lid box along with a cleaningstick and cork grease.

Cooperman Concert FifesThe Cooperman Concert fife isknown for its mellow low registerand very powerful upper register. We make this model in bothgrenadilla and rosewood.Six Hole Model The fife has the traditional 6 tone holes, with several notes of the chromat-ic scale requiring the use of half-holes.Ten Hole Model TheCooperman Concert fife featuresthe 6 main tone holes with 2pinky register holes and 2 thumbregister holes.

Cooperman McDonagh FifesThe McDonagh fife was devel-oped in New York by JohnMcDonagh over 40 years ago,and is a widely popular instrument. It differs from theCooperman Concert fife primarilyin the design of the bore and theplacement of the finger holes. We are honored to have Mr.McDonagh's support in bringingthis classic fife back to the market-place. We make this model ingrenadilla.Six Hole Model The fife hasthe traditional 6 tone holes, withseveral notes of the chromaticscale requiring the use of half-holes.Ten Hole Model TheMcDonagh model fife featuresthe 6 main tone holes, one ofwhich is doubled with a registerhole, plus 2 pinky register holesand 1 thumb register hole.

During the Renaissance the fife wascommonly known as the Swiss Pipedue to its widespread use by theSwiss Infantry, although it was in

common use as a martial signal instrumentthroughout Europe from the 14th centuryonward. In the 18th century fifers and drum-mers were often required, in addition to their indispensable military duties, to provide musicfor both formal and informal dancing.Manuals for the fife containing hundreds ofpopular airs first appeared in America in thelate 18th and early 19th centuries; the tuneswere often of folk origin, and Celtic influenceswere especially well represented. Although thefife played an important role in the militaryduring the American Civil War, this instru-ment had long since found its home in civilianlife. Today the fife is an instrument enjoyedequally by corps playing traditional marchingtunes, folk artists playing music representing a

wide variety of cultural influences, and wood-wind artists playing complex early music andmodern arrangements.

Our fife shop uses only the finest instrumentgrade grenadilla and rosewood to handcraftprofessional model Cooperman fifes, andbrings the same level of commitment to qualityto our student models in persimmon and FDAapproved plastic.

In its traditional form the fife is made of a single piece of wood with a simple cylindricalbore and six tone holes, with no keys; somenotes of the chromatic scale require half-holefingerings. In its contemporary form, the fifeis made in two pieces with a profiled bore and10 tone holes, with no keys; the added registernotes eliminate the need for half-hole finger-ings. Fifes are traditionally named for the notethat sounds when the first fingering on thechart is played; the chart for all fifes is written with this note, low D, all fingers down. Themost popular and traditional key is Folk Bb, sothat Bb sounds when this low D is fingered. This "Folk Bb" is equivalent to a "Concert Ab";that is, if the key of the fife were named as onewould name the key of a flute, it would becalled an Ab fife.

Specialty Fifes

We recommend either the TraditionalModel or the Concert Model fifefor almost all purposes, as these are

the instruments that have the best possibleintonation given the design limitationsimposed by the nature of a fife. For thosewho wish to portray certain eras with a particular focus, or who wish to match a newfife in with existing older model fifes, we havecreated this group of "specialty fifes". A fewof these fifes are described as "small bore".The small bore fifes are easy to play, with thehigh register particularly accessible, but thesmall bore also leads to the intonation problems that are universal in this type of fife, with a sharpening of the pitch.Firth, Pond & Co. 19th Century Model Fifeavailable Spring/Summer 2006This small bore Folk Bb fife is a reproduction of anantique in our collection, and is most suitable froCivil War reenactment.Veteran Fifer Model and Stony Creek ModelThese fifes are small bore instruments suitablefor playing with the old Ferrary fifes, Folk Bb.18th Century French D Model FifeThis fife is interpreted from print sources andimages of original instrments. The pitch issomewhat sharp Folk D (concert C).18th Century Old Pitch Bb Model FfeThis fife is similar to our Traditional Fife, butpitched to match an 18th century antique, which is quite sharp to the nominal Folk Bb.
