Nothing in making springs is set

    in stone.

Nothing I can think of has an

unbreakable rule that it MUST be

    done a certain way.

    BASIC TERMS

  • 8/11/2019 Two Point Coiling

    4/36

    Tool Function

    ! Cutter movable part of

    cutting system

! Arbor fixed part of cutting

    system! Upper coiling point

    controls OD and initial

    tension

    ! Lower coiling point centers

    OD over the arbor

! Wire guide holds the wire

    for the coiling process

  • 8/11/2019 Two Point Coiling

    5/36

All tooling is the right size

    Installed correctly on the machine.

  • 8/11/2019 Two Point Coiling

    6/36

Wire into the machine and up to the coiling points.

  • 8/11/2019 Two Point Coiling

    7/36

! Set the cutter to straight cut

! Adjust to arbor and cutter to cut the part off.

  • 8/11/2019 Two Point Coiling

    8/36

    Confirm coiling point setup

    Spring center

    Contact the wire in the

    center line of coiling

    point.

    Coiling point adjustments

    Lower coiling point

    should be in line with

    wire.

  • 8/11/2019 Two Point Coiling

    10/36

    Loosen both screws of the

    coiling point holders, then

feed some wire to let thecoiling points rotate to the

    wire.

    Get the spring to coil

Use the cutter and arbor to cut the part off

If you are using the rotating cut cutter and arbor, do not worry

about the burr at this time

! Get the part to coil and get the correct dia. ( just a little smaller than you really want )

! Correct initial tension for the spring you are making.

! You may have to remove the arbor, and or coiling points and do some modifications

to them in order to get all of this setup properly. ( This is normal! )

! Adjust in/out of the coiling point to get the desired initial tension.

Adjust the two coilingpointsin andout to get the desired initial tension.

    Measure the outside diameter of

    the spring.

  • 8/11/2019 Two Point Coiling

    13/36

At this point you should be able to coil the spring without it

catching any place on the machine

    The diameter should be correct

You should have the amount of tension that you want. If youdo not have ALL of these things do NOT go any further!

Check the initialtension on the coiled spring. If this amount isnot proper for the spring, please try to adjust the coiling points

    by above step.

Computer part Press the Q button to set the minimum OD.

Measure the part that you have coming off of the machine.

Enter OD reading in millimeters into the minimum OD section.

  • 8/11/2019 Two Point Coiling

    15/36

Enter the wire diameter in millimeters.

  • 8/11/2019 Two Point Coiling

    16/36

Go to the OD origin section input the correct ODfor your spring

  • 8/11/2019 Two Point Coiling

    Coil approx.3/4 of a coil

Bring the pitch tool up ( very close but not touching )

Record value in pitch tool section of the screen

    A basic compression spring has

    five basic parts.

Dead coil ( closed coil ) Transition from dead coil to body

    Body

    Second transition Last dead coil

Check to see if the part is square

    ( both ends )

  • 8/11/2019 Two Point Coiling

    23/36

Work on the front end first

Adjust feed in the N command firstend

    Going up, then add wire

Going down, subtract wire Keep this within + - .25 coils of the .75coils you started with

The ends not being square is not a

product of the machine speed, it hasto do with the amount of wire in thetransition. ( pitch to feed ratio )

  • 8/11/2019 Two Point Coiling

    24/36

    Transition is kicked up

    Transition laid down

  • 8/11/2019 Two Point Coiling

    26/36

If you can NOT get the end square, do the following.

Pitch tool origin is 8.00 and you have a pitch movement from

    the trail of 14.00.

    Insert pitch value of 11.00 ( center of 8.00 and 14.00 )

Press INS key to create a new step between step2 and step3. The original step3 will move down tostep4.

  • 8/11/2019 Two Point Coiling

    27/36

    MOVE N .38 PT 11.00

    MOVE N .38 PT 14.00

    !of the .75 value is .38 PT 10.0 = 14.0 ( body pitch ) + 8.0 ( origin ) / 2

11.0 is in the middle of these two values.

  • 8/11/2019 Two Point Coiling

    28/36

  • 8/11/2019 Two Point Coiling

    29/36

Adjust the feed on both steps

Adjust the pitch value on 003.

DO NOT ADJUST THE PITCH ON 004 TO ADJUST THE

SQUARNESS ( PITCH FOR THE BODY )

  • 8/11/2019 Two Point Coiling

    30/36

Do the same for the squareness of the last end. ( 2nd transition )

Difference is you will send the PT back to the PT origin.

  • 8/11/2019 Two Point Coiling

    31/36

    Both ends square

The machine should be running at rate

All the tooling should be set Arbor should be in the proper location etc.

Correct number of coils ( proper number of

    coils + - 1/4 of a coil )

At this point you should have the following

  • 8/11/2019 Two Point Coiling

    32/36

    setup the cutting system

    Fig-AFig-BFig-C

  • 8/11/2019 Two Point Coiling

    33/36

Measure the end coils to the body

Input the OD command in the program

The OD command will go in the TRANSITIONsection, not the body feed!

Add OD command to the step3when it starts to coil the spring with pitch.Add OD command to the step3when it starts to coil the spring with pitch.

  • 8/11/2019 Two Point Coiling

    34/36

Required OD of 25mm, ( the OD origin is

    25.0mm )

    Body measures 24.5mm

    OD command of approx. 25.5mm

Back end of spring ( the last transition )

OD back to the origin.( back to 25.0mm )

If you have two sections, you will need

    two OD commands!

  • 8/11/2019 Two Point Coiling

    35/36

If you have two sections for the transition like

below, then you will need two OD commands.

The OD command will go on the same line as thepitch.

Add OD command to the step3when it starts to coil the spring with pitch.

  • 8/11/2019 Two Point Coiling

    36/36

    Final Adjustments

    Check numbers of coils

    Check free length

Check OD of spring Check running speed

Check that all adjustment bolts are tight

    Set counter Start production
