Despite being a leading country in manufacturing and exporting of vaccines, two-thirds of kids in

India do not get their vaccinations on time which makes them prone

to diseases and contributes to early or untimely deaths.

According to American Researchers, most kids in India

lack timely vaccinations. And this outcome highlights the need of a

powerful child vaccination program in India.

In a recent research done by the University of Michigan's School of Public Health, it is being found that only 18 percent of kids are immunized with the advised 3 doses of DPT vaccine, while about a 3rd get the measles immunization by 10 months under the government-supported vaccination program.

The study's lead author, Nijika Shrivastwa who just completed her doctorate in epidemiology at University of Michigan and is now at the

South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control, said “this is a systemic problem. Immunizing a child six months after the

recommended time period can have dramatic implications for a child's vulnerability to diseases."

A senior associate dean for global public health at the U-M School of Public Health, Matthew Boulton mentioned that "every year, 26 million children are born in India — the greatest number by far of any country in the world.”

“Adding vast numbers of new children who need vaccination, while the older ones remain under or unvaccinated because of immunization delays, is like walking too slowly on a moving treadmill — you continuously fall further back," he added.

According to the study, only 12 percent of kids are immunized with the measles vaccine by the needed age of 9 months, although 75 percent are immunized by age 5. This pause in immunization can lead to regular outbreaks of measles in India.Studies say that about, 95 percent immunization is needed in a population to end measles outbreaks. With an effective child vaccination program in India, these issues can be successfully resolved.

Boulton furthre said that, “India's childhood vaccination rate is simply too low to successfully control transmission of disease and prevent measles-related childhood illnesses and deaths.” The research looked at the immunization rate of nearly 270,000 kids in the District Level Household and Facility survey data from 2008, a nationally representative sample.
