DEAR FRIENDS,
The Field Museum is essential to Chicago’s story. From our founding as part of the World’s Columbian
Exposition of 1893, we have become a world-class research and public learning institution. Similarly,
our collection is an iconic scientific resource, now an astonishing 24.5 million biological specimens
and anthropological artifacts.
Twenty-first century frontiers have emerged in the sciences to entice and challenge our scholars. And
museum audiences—in Chicago and around the world—bring fresh ideas about learning experiences
and an appetite for technologies unforeseen just five years ago.
To again realize the potential of your Museum, we have embarked on a new expedition—to define our
contributions in this new century and earn again our iconic status. We are a community of scientists
and educators whose work is made possible by friends and donors like you. As you will read in this
report, with your help, we collect, research, act, teach, and share.
For all you have done to bring The Field Museum to its 120th successful year, we are profoundly
grateful. And to build the institution’s bright future, we invite your ideas, leadership, and support.
Warm regards,
Introduction 1
Collections, research, and action are the three branches of our
scientific work. Collections are the storehouse of information that fuels
research about nature and culture. Research answers questions about
Earth’s past and present and charts the complexity of species and
societies. Action brings research to life by marshaling scientific data
to address problems that affect the planet and its people today. Taken
together, our science informs all programs and exhibitions that make
up our public education efforts.
SCIENCE
Collections. Some visitors wonder why The Field Museum continues to collect. The answer
is that the Museum collects in order to build an encyclopedic resource for the world scientific community
as they explore the mysteries of life on the planet.
“Scientists from around the world seek out our collections for their breadth,” explains Bill Stanley,
director of the Collections Center and Negaunee collection manager of mammals. Last year, 700 scientists
conducted research in the collections, and the Museum shipped 57,000 specimens across the globe for
study. Scientists in Chicago and abroad used the collections to investigate such topics as the DNA of bird
viruses, anti-cancer properties of plants, and the
dynamics of pre-historic extinction events.
The collections are the record of life on Earth.
The Museum preserves this record through careful
stewardship and conservation, from desalinating
Incan ceramics to installing state-of-the-art storage
for the insects collection. And the staff ensures
the value of this record by making it accessible to
scientists and educators worldwide either in person
or, increasingly, online.
The collections are also the heart of the exhibition halls.
When you explore the galleries, you experience these
collections and learn about their scientific significance.
The exhibits make the collections come to life for you.

A nearly completed $2.7 million project
funded by the National Science Foundation
creates a collaborative invertebrate research
and training center and enhances collection
facilities for the Museum’s noteworthy
collections of invertebrate animals. As part
of this award to Curator Rüdiger Bieler and
Associate Curator Margaret Thayer, the
pinned insects (4.5 million specimens) were
consolidated into a compact storage facility.
The addition of new space and cabinets for
dry mollusks and other marine invertebrates
doubled the collection capacity, making
the specimens readily accessible for the
first time in years and finally allowing
the incorporation of several important
accessions. These changes greatly increase
the efficiency of research projects involving
the Museum’s insect and invertebrate
scientists, their students, post-docs, and
internal and external collaborators.

COIN SUGGESTS ThE ChINESE TRADED IN AFRICA BEFORE ThE ARRIvAL OF EUROPEANS
An expedition led by Curator of
Anthropology Chapurukha (Chap)
Kusimba and colleague Dr. Sloan R.
Williams unearthed a 600-year-old
Chinese coin on Manda Island in
Kenya. It may confirm direct trade
between China and East Africa decades
before European explorers set sail. The
coin was issued by Emperor Yongle (r.
1403–25 AD). The square hole in the center
permitted wearers to string it on a belt. The
Emperor’s name is written on the coin, making
it easy to date. Dr. Kusimba explains the coin
introduces new questions about the relationship
between China and Indian Ocean nations.
ExPEDITION YIELDS PLANTS ThAT MAY IDENTIFY SIGNS OF GLOBAL WARMING
Adjunct Curator and McCarter Collections Manager
Matt von Konrat led an international team of scientists
on an expedition to New Caledonia, an island in the
South Pacific and one of 35 biodiversity hotspots in
the world. Dr. von Konrat and the team collected 5,000
early land plants (bryophytes), ferns, and lichenized
fungi. An expedition of this scale in New Caledonia is
unprecedented. The trip generated dozens of new genus
and species records for the island and several new species,
including a tree fern. Due to their small size, bryophytes
and lichens respond rapidly to environmental and
ecological change. Scientists use them to identify early
signs of global warming and past climate change.

NEW SPECIES OF BIRD DESCRIBED
Ben Winger and Staff Scientist Jason Weckstein described a new
species of bird, the Sira Barbet (Capito fitzpatricki). Shortly after
graduating from Cornell University in 2008, Mr. Winger and three
undergraduate colleagues discovered the bird, a rare occurrence,
in the Andes. Mr. Winger is now a PhD candidate in the Committee
on Evolutionary Biology, a joint graduate program involving The
Field Museum and the University of Chicago. His dissertation
research focuses on bird diversification in the Andes. Dr. Weckstein
gathered and analyzed DNA sequence data documenting the genetic
distinctiveness of the barbet in the Pritzker Laboratory of Molecular
Systematics and Evolution.
An 80-pound leopard attacked Chief Taxidermist Carl Akeley while he was on expedition in Somaliland in 1896. Realizing he was battling for his life, Akeley managed to strangle the animal with his bare hands. The incident resulted in one of the most famous photos in Field Museum history: Akeley posing with the dead leopard with his hands and arms bandaged.FACTS

Most theropod dinosaurs were carnivores like T. rex, but some
evolved into gigantic herbivores perhaps rivaling T. rex in size.
Scientists theorize that vertebrate herbivores evolve larger bodies
to accommodate bigger digestive tracts that maximize nutrition
uptake from low-calorie plant fodder, but this has rarely been tested.
Associate Curator of Paleontology Dr. Peter Makovicky and colleague
Dr. Lindsay Zanno examined body size evolution in herbivorous
theropods. They found that whereas some evolved larger sizes, others
showed evolutionary decreases in size. Fluctuating environmental
conditions and competition with other herbivores likely played more
significant roles in size evolution than selection for larger guts.

2012 ANNUAL REPORT TO DONORS
Research. Visitors new to The Field Museum may be surprised to learn the Museum conducts
research. Research gives purpose to the collections these visitors see and unlocks the information they contain.
The scientific staff works in the social sciences (anthropology), life sciences (botany and zoology), and earth sciences
(paleontology and meteoritics). In 2012, foundations and federal agencies awarded the Museum $2.7 million in new
research grants. With this support, the scientific staff CT-scanned mummies to understand the burial habits of
ancient Egyptians, used DNA barcoding to understand the evolutionary relationships of fungi, and described a new
species of small dinosaur from Argentina. Their work resulted in 270 articles and books, enriching the world’s
foundation of scientific knowledge. Their investigations brought them to 30 countries, from as near as
Mexico and Peru to as distant as China and Kenya.
Entwined with the Museum’s research is a commitment to training the next generation
of scientists. The Museum partners with major universities, including Northwestern
University, the University of Chicago, and the University of Illinois at Chicago. Graduate
students from these institutions work side by side with the Museum’s scientists on
their dissertations and use the collections as a primary resource for their research.
In 2012, the scientific staff hosted 50 resident graduate students and 24
postdoctoral researchers. They also mentored young scientists in dozens
of countries in Africa, Latin America, Asia, and the Pacific.
A commitment to interdisciplinary research increasingly will define the
Museum’s scientific work. “Moving forward, we will not only continue
our collections-based research programs,” explains Dr. Olivier Rieppel,
director of the Integrative Research Center and Rowe family curator
of evolutionary biology, “but also encourage new, integrative, and
collaborative initiatives.”

JORDAN’S RULE DOES APPLY TO OCTOPUSES
Jordan’s Rule states that water temperatures
affect countable traits in fishes. The
number of spines in the dorsal fin of two
fishes hatched from eggs in different water
temperatures will vary. During an expedition
to the East Pacific Rise, Associate Curator of Invertebrates Janet Voight
collected specimens that allowed her to test if Jordan’s Rule applies
to octopuses. Although sucker counts were considered to be species
specific, Field Museum specimens of the same species Dr. Voight
collected at 9 degrees north differed from those collected at 13 degrees
north, suggesting Jordan’s Rule may apply to many animals.

“T. REx OF ThE SEA” UNEARThED
Scientists described a new species of ichthyosaur discovered
in 1998 in Nevada by Collections Manager Jim Holstein. The
244-million-year-old fossil, Thalattoarchon saurophagis
(lizard-eating sovereign of the sea), was excavated in 2010 and
brought to the Museum for study. Dubbed the T. rex of the sea,
this 28-foot-long predator roamed the Triassic seas 8 million
years after Earth’s most severe mass extinction. The rise of this
top predator documents the rapid recovery of a complex ecosystem.
Dr. Olivier Rieppel believes additional research will help us
understand Earth’s evolutionary dynamics and provide insights
on how to manage the biodiversity crisis humans are creating today.

PRESERvATION OF ThE FIRST GREAT WALL OF ChINA ENCOURAGED
Most people are aware of the Great Wall of China. Fewer people are
familiar with the earlier great walls of China. Curator of East Asian
Anthropology Dr. Gary Feinman and Adjunct Curator of Anthropology
Linda Nicholas mapped 10 kilometers of China’s first great wall, the
Great Wall of the Qi state. This wall crossed what is now Shandong
Province, separating the Qi state from its enemies to the south. The
mapping took place during the seventeenth season of collaboration
with colleagues at Shandong University. The project has covered 2,000
square kilometers, the largest contiguous area systematically surveyed
by archaeologists in East Asia. By mapping the wall and reporting its
condition and location to local government officials, the team aims
to encourage its preservation and conservation.
RESEARCh INTERNShIP PREPARES STUDENT FOR CAREER IN BIOLOGY
Lynika Strozier’s educational journey included many challenges: a one-parent home, a learning disability,
and educational setbacks. In 2009, as an undergraduate at Dominican University, Ms. Strozier began interning
with the Museum’s botany team under Dr. Matt von Konrat. With his tutelage over the past four years, she
advanced from databasing collections to performing molecular research. Ms. Strozier says the Museum
provided her with solid training and mentors. Sushma Reddy, former post-doctoral researcher, advised
her on building her credentials for graduate school. This spring, Ms. Stozier gained admission to several
universities to pursue a master’s degree in biology. She will accept an offer soon.
FORENSIC RECONSTRUCTIONS BRING MUMMIES TO LIFE
Forensic facial reconstructions help anthropologists characterize
the individuals of past societies. A. Watson Armour III Curator of
Biological Anthropology Robert Martin commissioned famed forensic
sculptor Elisabeth Daynès to create facial reconstructions of two
Egyptian mummies in the exhibition Images of the Afterlife. Ms. Daynès
rendered the busts from resin copies of the skulls, which a 3D copier
generated using digital images taken in 2011. These digital images
were featured in the exhibition Opening the Vaults: Mummies (see page
19). During the original project, Regenstein Conservator for Pacific
Anthropology J. P. Brown and Dr. Martin used medical CT scanners to
look inside mummy bundles in the collections. The scanners permitted
them to study the bodies without removing the original wrappings.
Using muscle- and skin-layering techniques, Ms. Daynès revealed a curly
haired woman in her forties and a teenage boy as they appeared in life.
The floor tiles in Stanley Field Hall contain fossils. Made of limestone quarried in Carthage, Missouri, they were part of a seabed 325 million years ago.FACTS

Rapid inventories, expert surveys of an area’s
importance for conservation, put biological
and cultural science directly into the hands of
decision makers. Since the Museum completed
its first inventory in 1999, the governments of
Peru, Ecuador, and Bolivia have used them to
protect more than 23 million acres of Earth’s
most diverse forests. In 2012, the Peruvian
government established four new conservation
areas in the Amazon based on the Museum’s
previous inventories (2.4 million acres or about
half the size of New Jersey): one national park
(Güeppí-Sekime National Park), two communal
reserves (Airo Pai and Huimeki), and one
regional conservation area (Maijuna). Peru now
protects approximately 17 percent of its land
area, an increase of approximately 12 percent
in the last 15 years.

In 2007, The Field Museum conducted a rapid inventory of the Güeppí region in Northern Peru. In 2012, Peru declared the area a new national park encompassing three vast expanses of diverse lowland forests spanning 1.5 million acres.
Action. Some visitors wonder how the Museum’s research affects their lives. The Museum
puts its scientific expertise and the powerhouse of information in the collections to work to ensure
the future of the planet.
The Museum’s action efforts focus on addressing pressing issues in conservation and cultural
understanding. Through key partnerships, in the past year the Museum provided the information
that equipped governments in the lush Andes-Amazon region to protect vast expanses of forests
and prepared Cordillera Azul National Park for the carbon market. The Museum also worked with
indigenous communities in northern Peru to develop quality of life plans and secure
government protection of their lands.
In the Chicago region, the Museum leads collaborations to bring people
and nature together, notably in initiatives like Chicago Wilderness and
the 220-square-mile Millennium Reserve. These local partnerships
harness the energy of citizen-scientists and connect young people
with nature. In 2012, the Museum engaged 3,500 students in the
restoration of 18 natural areas; and its stewardship program for
children, Mighty Acorns, was recognized by both the Illinois
Department of Natural Resources and the US Fish and Wildlife
Service as a top environmental program for urban youth.
Foundations and federal agencies awarded the Museum $6.7
million in new grants to support this work in 2012. “Turning
science into action will be a growing part of our science programs
in the coming years,” says Dr. Corine Vriesendorp, director of
the Science Action Center and senior conservation ecologist.
For more information about the Museum’s conservation and
quality-of-life accomplishments, see ecco.fieldmuseum.org.

Shark Fin Soup in the United States
ShARk FIN SOUP RESEARCh LEADS TO ThE PROTECTION OF ThREATENED SPECIES
A. Watson Armour III Manager of the Pritzker Laboratory Kevin Feldheim and collaborators at Stony Brook University
conducted the first nationwide study of the Chinese delicacy shark fin soup. With numerous shark species facing
extirpation, the study sought to identify the species used in the soup, which is sold in restaurants in the United States.
A major obstacle to this research had been the deterioration of DNA due to preparation and cooking. At the Pritzker
Laboratory, Dr. Feldheim and the team modified existing DNA-barcoding techniques to identify deteriorated DNA
fragments. They found threatened species are prevalent in the soup sold in the United States. The Pew Environment
Group, which funded the research, is using the data to advocate against these practices. In April 2013, the New York
State Senate voted to ban the possession, sale, trade, and distribution of shark fins.
NATIONAL FOREST IN PERU CERTIFIED TO RECEIvE CARBON CREDITS
With its conservation and government partners in Peru, the Museum
has been a leader in protecting Cordillera Azul National Park from
deforestation. The work resulted in the reduction of 6.4 million tons
of carbon dioxide emissions between 2008 and 2012, the equivalent to
removing all vehicles registered in Chicago from the roads for one year.
In 2012, the team completed a project to earn REDD+ certification
for these lands. REDD+ (Reducing Emissions from Deforestation
and Forest Degradation plus biodiversity and social benefits) creates
financial value for the carbon stored in forests. The project was
certified in early 2013.
Generous support for this project was provided by Exelon Corporation,
The Boeing Company, The Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation,
the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation, and the US Agency for
International Development.Cordillera Azul National Park stores more than 200 million tons of carbon in its vast forests.

for conservation and cultural understanding, the institution embarked
on the ECCo Major Gifts Initiative in 2011 and 2012. Under the
leadership of Trustee Constance (Connie) Keller, the initiative raised
$16.2 million in gifts and pledges by December 2012. Exceptional
support came from Connie and Dennis Keller, Mr. and Mrs. James S.

GUIDEBOOk TO hELP LOCAL NATURAL RESOURCE MANAGERS RESPOND TO CLIMATE ChANGES
The climate is changing rapidly in Chicago. Since 1980, the temperature in winter has
increased 4°F. Since 1900, the annual rate of heavy rainfall has doubled. Rapid changes
in climate threaten natural resources. For Chicago to manage its resources in an effective,
cost-efficient way, it must respond to these changes. To help Chicago’s policy makers and
natural resource managers adopt best practices, the Museum (with The Nature Conservancy
and the University of Notre Dame) in collaboration with the City developed the Climate
Considerations guidebook. This guidebook offers a framework for policy makers and
landscape managers to think about the “climate question,” so they can create landscapes
that are resilient to a broad spectrum of environmental conditions and provide key services
to people while making the best use of limited resources.

Education. Programs move the learning experience in a museum to one of hands-on
engagement with the collections and the experts who study them. The Museum invests its expertise
in the educational needs of the community, especially local school children.
Since 1912, the Museum has brought science into local classrooms. Its student programs strive to
develop children’s critical thinking skills thus preparing them for the future. Its teacher programs build
educators’ capacity to carry forth this mission. In 2012, the Museum engaged in a major realignment
of its education programming. “Focusing on Pre-K to grade 12 and family audiences, we have created
initiatives that help children explore science and develop critical thinking skills,” explains Director of
Education Beth Crownover. Efforts over the next five years will concentrate on three major educational
needs in the Chicago community: building children’s awareness of science, enhancing science in the
classroom, and engaging teens in science.
The Museum employs an inquiry-based approach to learning rooted in the collections to develop an
interest in science with target audiences. This approach provides the Museum with an opportunity to
engage young learners in a dialogue about discovery in which they ask questions, make observations,
and draw conclusions. This is similar to the way our scientists engage in their work.
The programs comprise three audience-focused
teams. The Public Programs team builds young
children’s awareness of science via experiences that
begin with the Crown Family PlayLab. The School
Partnerships and Programs team enhances science in
the classroom through intentional partnerships and
teacher professional development using the N. W. Harris
Learning Collection as its base. The Digital Learning team
engages teens in science through digital programs in the
Grainger Digital Media Studio.
Education programs and exhibitions translate our
scientific work into relevant experiences for the
public to understand Earth and the cultures that
occupy it. Our science is the root of these programs.
Research and action become the stories we tell, and
collections make these experiences tangible.

The N. W. Harris Learning Collection has been
the cornerstone of the Museum’s educational
program since 1911, when it was endowed by
Chicago business leader Norman Wait Harris.
It reopened in August 2012 after an eighteen-
month comprehensive renovation—its first in
many decades. The Harris Learning Collection
is the foundation for the methods and tools
the Museum uses in its classroom programs.
It is composed of a unique set of 1,200 hands-
on kits teachers borrow for use in their
classrooms. Each kit contains a collection
of real specimens, models, or artifacts
accompanied by an educator guide that
provides lessons aligned with curricula taught
in Chicago’s schools. In 2013, the Harris
Learning Collection will serve more than
225 teachers and 157,500 students.

AWARD-WINNING SChOOL PARTNERShIP IMPROvES SCIENCE EDUCATION IN ThE ChICAGO PUBLIC SChOOLS
A stumbling block to science education efforts is the low number of teachers who have
strong science backgrounds. The Museum addresses this deficit through programs designed
to improve teachers’ knowledge of science and classroom skills. Early Elementary Science
Partnership (E2SP), the Museum’s premier professional development program, takes this
work one step further and focuses solely on K–3 Chicago Public School (CPS) teachers. The
E2SP pilot worked with 143 teachers and 6,930 students from 2010 to 2013 and merged CPS’s
science curriculum with education resources at local museums. Participating teachers learned
to use these resources to progressively build children’s understanding of science. In 2012, E2SP
won the prestigious EdCom Award from the American Alliance of Museums for excellence in
educational programming.
The Early Elementary Science Partnership pilot was generously supported by the Searle Funds at The Chicago
Community Trust, Motorola Solutions Foundation, and Polk Bros. Foundation.

TEEN PROGRAMS INCREASE WITh OPENING OF GRAINGER DIGITAL MEDIA STUDIO
A critical barrier to science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM)
education at higher grade levels is the negative attitude many teens
associate with these topics. Although young adults spend large
quantities of time interacting with digital media, they fail to develop the
skills necessary to critically access and interpret the information they
encounter. To address this issue, the Museum opened the Grainger Digital
Media Studio. Supported by The Grainger Foundation, the Grainger
Studio is the Museum’s first digital classroom. It offers programs that
bridge the gap between scientific inquiry and digital media creation
to engage teens in science.

2012 ANNUAL REPORT TO DONORS
PUBLIC ENGAGEMENT

Exhibitions. The Museum teaches through objects. When several senses
are involved, it is easier to learn about complex ideas. Through the experience of seeing
and discussing objects with family and friends, visitors interpret the objects and apply
them to abstract concepts.
More than 1.2 million people each year visit the Museum to experience its exhibitions. Special
exhibitions introduce a diverse range of topics to audiences in addition to the core concepts
shared by permanent exhibitions. In 2012, the Museum presented ten special exhibitions.
Topics included the exploitation of natural resources in Blood/Stones: Burmese Rubies,
the history of kingship in Maharaja: The Splendor of India’s Royal Courts, and the concept
of statesmanship in Genghis Khan.
The year also saw a major shift in the vision for special exhibitions. The Museum will present
more exhibitions created from its collections and about its research. Two new multi-year
exhibition series will carry forth this concept: Opening the Vaults and Straight from The Field.
Opening the Vaults focuses on rarely seen objects in the collections. The overwhelming
popularity of Opening the Vaults: Mummies inspired the series. Presenting twenty
Egyptian and South American mummies, many of which had not been seen
publicly in decades, the exhibition drew record numbers of visitors.
Straight from The Field uses the collections to engage visitors in the
lives of scientists and their research. This concept shaped Fashion
and The Field Museum Collection: Maria Pinto. The exhibition
explores how historical objects continue to influence the present.
Research on the Museum’s extensive
mummy collection—CT scanning, isotopic
testing, and DNA analysis—reveals much
about the health and beliefs of individuals
who lived thousands of years ago. Opening
the Vaults: Mummies showcased these
findings and brought to the public twenty
mummies from Egypt and Peru. Many
had not been seen since 1893, when they
were exhibited at the World’s Columbian
Exposition. Presented in their original
nineteenth-century display cases, the
mummies rested alongside detailed
CT scans and interactives that exposed
methods of mummification, signs of
injuries and illnesses, and jewelry.
Mummies experienced the highest
per-day attendance of any exhibition
since Tutankhamun and the Golden Age
of the Pharaohs in 2006.
Opening the Vaults: Mummies was created
by The Field Museum.

2012 ANNUAL REPORT TO DONORS
Several objects in the collection, including this Chinese actor’s headdress, inspired the “Alaka” ensemble (left), named after Curator Alaka Wali. This headdress appeared in the Beijing Opera’s performance of “Tower of the Yellow Crane” in the early twentieth century.

Future exhibitions like Fashion and The Field Museum
Collection: Maria Pinto will introduce the public to
the Museum’s scientists. Curator of North American
Anthropology Alaka Wali collaborated with fashion
designer Maria Pinto—a favorite of First Lady
Michelle Obama—to explore the power of historical
objects to inform contemporary art and design.
Accompanying Dr. Wali into the anthropology
collections, Ms. Pinto chose twenty-five garments
and adornments, including an Inuit raincoat made of
seal intestines. Inspired by these artifacts, she designed
a couture clothing collection and displayed seven pieces
in the exhibition.
This exhibition is organized by The Field Museum and
Maria Pinto. Major Sponsor: Sara Lee Foundation
RENOvATED Ronald and ChRistina Gidwitz hall of BiRds AMONG ThE BEST IN ThE WORLD
The Museum embarked on a major
conservation and technological upgrade
of its iconic Hall of Birds, long considered
one of the most outstanding displays of
birds in the world. The new hall celebrates
old and new. The renovations honor the
historical significance of the exhibit cases
by leaving intact the original arrangements;
yet, they are integrated with the latest
technology to relay research in a modern,
immersive manner. Interactive kiosks and
huge atmospheric animations enhance the
visitor experience. Exhibition preparators
cleaned and repaired 1,100 specimens. The
renovation will be a model for enhancing
other iconic halls, including Mammals of
Asia and Plants of the World.
The Field Museum acknowledges the generous
support from Ronald and Christina Gidwitz and
The Grainger Digital Initiative.

SEARLE LOUNGE RENOvATION BECOMES MODEL FOR PERMANENT ExhIBITION ENhANCEMENTS
Renovated and modernized in 2012, the Searle Family Lounge will
serve as a new model for enhancements to permanent exhibitions:
classic design aesthetic paired with interactive features and digital
components. Cherry-stained wooden exhibition cases are inspired
by the Museum’s original early twentieth-century cases. Digital
components, including touchscreens, convey content in a manner
appealing to young, digital-age, visitors. Information, carefully
selected by Field Museum scientists, is uploaded to these tools.
The technology permits visitors to enhance their experiences in
immersive ways. The renovation was made possible by Michael,
Nydia, and Mrs. William L. Searle, whose family contributions to
the Museum have spanned three generations.
An Egyptian Fourth-Dynasty chapel—a remnant of a past exhibition dating to the early twentieth century—is hidden in the walls of the Museum’s ground floor.

FACTSFIELD
ENhANCEMENT TO INCOMING ExhIBITION INCREASES vISITOR ATTENDANCE
Genghis Khan demonstrated how the Museum’s exhibitions
team and curators redesign special shows organized by
outside entities to increase visitor engagement. The Museum
redeveloped Genghis Khan’s text-heavy graphic panels
and presented a hierarchy of information. Curators,
incorporating the theme of world empires, placed
the Mongol Empire in broad historical context. The
exhibition saw a 163 percent increase in visitors
compared to the typical special exhibition. The
work was made possible because the Museum
possesses an in-house exhibition production
center, a rarity among institutions. It is one
of the largest in the country.
Genghis Khan is produced by Imagine Exhibitions Inc.

Claudia Winkler fondly recalls visiting the McDonald’s Fossil Prep
Lab in 1997 with her niece and nephew to watch preparators clean
SUE’s bones for public display. She immediately was drawn to the
incredible fossil and decided, “when I retire, I am going to be a
SUE docent.” In July 2010, she did just that. Today, Claudia can be
spotted Wednesday afternoons engaging Museum guests with SUE.
After one year as a docent, she increased her annual giving by
joining The Founders’ Council. “My love of SUE and my desire to
help scientific research have made me feel so much more a part
of the Museum now.” Her support didn’t stop there. Last year, she
made a provision for the Museum in her living trust: “You have to
decide what has become most important to you and what your
legacy is going to be.”

In 2012, The Field Museum proudly welcomed Dr. Ben Marks
to its scientific staff. He succeeded Dr. Dave Willard, who retired
as collections manager of the division of birds and oversaw
500,000 specimens. Ben’s appointment was made possible by
Trustee Bill Gantz, who established an endowment to provide
for the care and continued expansion of the birds collection.
Once a volunteer with the birds group, Ben received his
doctorate at Louisiana State University and, more recently,
managed zoological collections at Texas A&M University. He
brings with him expertise in the evolution and geographic
distribution of bird species.
Bill Gantz and three of his grandsons—Dylan McLamore, Ian Burns,
and Jerome Gantz—volunteered on a Field Museum fossil dig in Wyoming
in July 2012.

This past holiday season, Connie and Mark Crane made a touching
gesture to The Field Museum. They encouraged their children to
make contributions to the Museum in lieu of purchasing gifts for
the family. Connie explains: “It’s a big world and a big society, and
we owe our communities a lot.”
Connie and Mark’s relationship with the Museum spans decades
and extends to many aspects of the institution. They have been
members of The Founders’ Council since 1985, and Connie has
been a member of the Women’s Board since 1981. They have
made significant gifts in support of anthropology and were
members of the Anthropology Alliance Steering Committee for
many years. Connie also has dedicated more than 25 years as a
volunteer with the anthropology group.

Trustee Bob Loveman has been an advocate, friend, and champion
of The Field Museum for decades. Serving as Steering Committee
Chair of The Founders’ Council for the last seven years, he has
opened his home to share the latest scientific research with familiar
faces along with new friends interested in making an impact at the
Museum. His dedication to the Trustees’ Annual Fund played a
crucial role in achieving 100 percent participation in 2012. Bob and
his wife, Gail, care deeply for Earth and its people, as evidenced by
their financial contributions and their roles with the volunteer fire
department in Boulder, Colorado.

Wallace III
At age 16, William Kellogg began volunteering at The Field
Museum, where he learned the art of taxidermy. He describes
the Museum as a center for learning about the past and
understanding the future that stimulates intellectual development
in both the young and the old. This belief led to his support
(through General Packaging Products) of the e-book Art & Science
of Birds (forthcoming) by Artist-in-Residence Peggy Macnamara

Trustee Adnaan Hamid grew up visiting The Field Museum.
He became reacquainted with the institution once he had
children of his own. He is grateful to share his support of the
Museum with his children to teach them “it is a part of what
makes society better. You can actually go in and see the effect
your gift has and watch how science is employed throughout
the Museum’s work.”
Sharing a passion for education, Adnaan and his wife, Elissa
Efroymson, funded educational programming for Maharaja:
The Splendor of India’s Royal Courts through the Efroymson
Family Fund. In these programs, India came to life for others.
Children learned about the country through interactive play
and art projects in the Crown Family PlayLab. And 6,400
visitors enjoyed spectacular dance, musical, and storytelling
performances by the Kalapriya Center for Indian Performing Arts.

The Field Museum mourns the loss of Hugo Melvoin, trustee
and dedicated member of The Field Museum’s family. Growing
up in Chicago, Hugo was a lifelong fan of the Museum. He joined
the Board of Trustees in 1971 and distinguished himself in
numerous subjects, including the principles of collections care.
His efforts reflected his admiration for the Museum’s scientists,
“whose passions lead them to devote a lifetime of study to the
flora, fauna, geology, and diversity of cultures that make up
this planet.” His legacy is interwoven throughout the Museum’s
policies and practices.

Honor Roll of Donors 49
ThANk YOU, JOhNThe Field Museum gratefully acknowledges John W. McCarter Jr. for his sixteen-year service as the institution’s president and CEO. His tenure will be remembered as an era of substantial accomplishments. He undertook ambitious capital projects to advance the Museum’s scientific mission and increase its international profile. To enable this work, he led campaigns that raised $500 million.
John encouraged the expansion of the traveling and special exhibition programs with blockbusters, such as Tutankhamun and the Golden Age of the Pharaohs. No one will forget the acquisition of SUE, now the most famous dinosaur in the world. Replicas have traveled internationally since 2000 and attracted large audiences across the world, from Japan to Costa Rica, New Zealand, and Spain. The Museum now greets 27 million travelers each year at O’Hare International Airport through the addition of The Field Museum Store in terminals one and three and a towering cast of Brachiosaurus.
John celebrated research and collections. With scientists collecting in 30 countries each year, storage onsite became scarce. He championed the Collections Resource Center, which added 186,000 square feet of new storage space and laboratories. John also passionately supported the Museum’s scientific commitment to environmental conservation. During his tenure, the Museum conducted 25 rapid inventories, which document biodiversity and record the strengths and aspirations of local villagers. These inventories have motivated governments around the world to set aside 33 million acres of forests.
In 2012, the Board of Trustees led a special effort to endow research and collections care at The Field Museum. The McCarter Fund for Science will ensure the legacy of achievement for which The Field Museum and John are renowned.
