His office was awarded the National Institute of Governmental Purchasing's Outstanding Agency Accreditation Achievement Award in 1999 and the National Purchasing Institute's Achievement of Excellence in Procurement Award in 2004. A member of MPPOA for over 25 years, Zatalokin has served on the Board as a Director chairing the 2005 and 2006 Vendor Expo Committee. He currently is Chair of the Marketing Committee. Zatalokin co-chaired the very successful 2000 MPPOA Conference held in Muskegon. “I hope to finish my career by serving as MPPOA's president,” he says. SYLVIA PAHL, Senior Buyer for the City of Kalamazoo, has been with the City for 27 years. She is fluent in Spanish and provides translation services to her entity and to members of the community. Pahl currently serves on the MPPOA board and has held the office of Treasurer. She has been Marketing Chair and currently chairs the Professional Recognition/Scholarships Committee. She was Buyer of the Year in 1999. Pahl has been an officer and board member of her labor union for many years and mentors city employees. Her track record as a community and church volunteer, as well as her willingness to help guide MPPOA is legendary. “I would be privileged to serve as president,” she says, “and continue my work with the exceptional professionals in this great organization,” she says. Welcome to the President’s Corner!

As I pen my final message, I want to take the time toreflect on the past year as president of MPPOA. It hasbeen an amazing ride. We’ve accomplished a great dealsince last May and there’s even more to come.

A special thank you goes to our entire board for theirtireless dedication and hard work over the past year:Scott Guzzy, Cheryl McCaffery, Janice Sierzenga,Roberta Narlock, Kerry Bright, Jana Daroczy, MansfieldMatthewson, Sylvia Pahl, Stephanie Robinson, DeborahScully, and Lynn Zatalokin. I want to thank our supportstaff as well: Maryellen Jansen and Sally Hawk.

Our annual conference is quickly approaching. Pleasejoin us May 16 – 18, 2007 in Gaylord, MI at the beautifulTreetops Resort. The topic “R U Certifiable?” hasextraordinary training sessions geared towardsprofessional certification. Registration is going on now.Please hurry so that you won’t miss this wonderfulopportunity.

In addition, there are several LEAP classes scheduled forthe coming months and I want to encourage the entiremembership to attend.

President-Elect Scott Guzzy has sent a letter to Representative SteveTobocman regarding House Bill 4487 and 4488. These bills containobjectionable language regarding cooperative bulk purchasingbetween the state and local governments. Former MPPOA President,Mike Lasley urged MPPOA members “…to prepare resolutionssupported by their city council to Rep. Tobocman and their local staterepresentatives, as well.”

Douglas Glaser has been a Purchasing Agent for the WayneCounty Airport Authority for more than two years. His interestin purchasing can be traced to when he was an undergraduatestudent at Michigan State University, He majored in SupplyChain Management—a degree which focuses on purchasing,operations management and logistics. “I worked in logistics forRail Services, Inc., and later for Ogihara America in operationsmanagement as a Production Manager. Glaser has also served asthe Director of Finance and Purchasing for Campus Crusade forChrist at Kent State University and worked for Camp RichardsonResort in Lake Tahoe, California, as an intern in purchasing.

“The Wayne County Airport Authority is my first purchasingposition for a public entity. I can honestly say that I have lovedevery day since I started,” says Glaser. He is pursuing hisMasters of Public Administration (MPA) and is planning to takethe CPPB exam in the summer of 2007. He has also openeddialogue with the faculty of Eastern Michigan University’sPolitical Science Department about adding a “PublicProcurement” course to the list of MPA electives.

“ I am passionate about nature and the environment,” saysGlaser. “I enjoy hiking, camping, and spending the summer dayson the lake with my family. I am also involved in my church whereI lead a young adult ministry.” Glaser recently bought his firsthouse where I lives with his two dogs: Annie and Charlie.
