WELCOME FROM THE PGA OF AUSTRALIA

The 2020 TX Civil & Logistics WA PGA Championship will be unlike any other as we showcase Western Australia’s golfing talent and future stars at one of the state’s most picturesque courses.

The PGA of Australia, its officials and Professionals are delighted to return to Kalgoorlie Golf Course for three rounds of world-class golf action in addition to the Road to the Outback Challenge and a range of off-course activities.

The journey to Kalgoorlie-Boulder is a highlight on the PGA of Australia’s calendar each year and I thank the city for hosting us for a ninth time in 2020.

We are proud to continue the Championship’s long-standing tradition of promoting not only the golfing opportunities on offer in Western Australia but the tremendous ability of the state’s professional and amateur golfers.

This year has presented a number of challenges, however, together with our partners we are pleased to provide an additional playing opportunity for the

state’s elite in what has been a time of uncertainty for many.

Events like this are not possible without the strong support from our partners, particularly in these trying times. I would like to thank TX Civil & Logistics, the City of Kalgoorlie Boulder, the WA Government and all our partners for sharing our vision in creating a professional golf tournament in the outback.

On behalf of the PGA of Australia I wish all the competitors the best of luck.

Thank you all for attending the TX Civil & Logistics WA PGA Championship and I hope you enjoy an electrifying week of golf on and off the course from field featuring the best the west has to offer.

Play well and enjoy the Kalgoorlie experience where the green meets the red.

WELCOME TO CITY OF KALGOORLIE

Welcome to the TX Civil and Logistics WA PGA Championship, an event befitting our City and our amazing golf course. The City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder, with support from TX Civil & Logistics, and the State Government, is hosting this prestigious event at the Kalgoorlie Golf Course for the ninth year.

Since opening for play in November 2010, the Kalgoorlie Golf Course is currently ranked as the 24th best course in Australia by Golf Digest, an achievement that all residents of our great City can be proud of.

Every year Australia’s best professional golfers rave about the course, which is not only visually spectacular but unique and challenging.

Last summer was the hottest and driest we have had here since the course opened, and half the greens were in need of significant work to get them back up to standard for the PGA. This was exacerbated by the COVID-19 restrictions, which brought a new level of challenges to the course preparation; however, our fantastic staff, led by Superintendent Patrick Casey, have done a sterling job in getting all the greens back into play – although I’m sure they would like a little more rain.

The PGA continues to bring a whole new level of competition to Kalgoorlie and while, because of COVID-19 the depth of the field isn’t as big as normal, country people are very parochial and will enjoy seeing just West Aussie pros and leading amateurs.

This free, family friendly tournament will feature some of the State’s best professional golfers. It will kick off with a Pro-Am event on Wednesday, October 7, followed by the three days of play. The busy competition program will be complemented by a full series of community golf clinics - a great boost of local juniors.

October is a big month for Kalgoorlie-Boulder, with Race Round right before the PGA, followed by the Diggers and Dealers Mining Forum and then the Kalgoorlie Desert Race, and we are thrilled to see so many people heading our way for what is a very busy and exciting time here in the Goldfields.

WELCOME FROM THE GOLDFIELDS GOLF CLUB

To those of us in the Kalgoorlie-Boulder community that both love to play and watch golf, the decision by the City and the PGA to hold the ninth WA PGA Championship in Kalgoorlie Boulder is exciting news. This has been a year filled with uncertainty and a due focus on our health, both on a personal and corporate level. The COVID-19 pandemic has affected all our lives in some way and to have areas of our lives continue as near to normal as possible brings a sign that we are well on a journey back to living our lives in some normalcy.

We welcome the PGA and all the players who are visiting one of the best places and golf courses in the world! This is going to be a unique tournament with an obvious strong Western Australian bias due to the travel restrictions. I see this as being a huge positive for the development of our West Aussie Pro golfers and the opportunity for a number of amateurs to come and play the Kalgoorlie Golf Course. The “Road to the Outback” is a very popular draw to the field as it gives the average amateur club golfer a chance to play with the Pro’s.

The field of 45 Professional WA golfers is competing for a prize pool of around $80,000 dollars with the support of 15 elite amateurs and 42 ‘Road to the Outback’ amateurs delivering a show of skill, talent and excitement for the Kalgoorlie-Boulder community. There are a number of returning players in this field as they all love our Kalgoorlie Golf Course. I encourage all of the community to come along and witness some high-level golf skill in action.

Sponsors are a big part of the success of any sporting program and there are many who have again supported the PGA in Kalgoorlie-Boulder to see the success of this tournament. Their generosity and commitment is much appreciated and acknowledged in the community.

Pat Casey and his team have been diligently preparing the course to a PGA standard after a very harsh summer last year. The course is going to be at a very challenging level for the skills of the players to be put to the test. The Goldfields Golf Club will once again support the PGA and the City in the supply of administration, billets, volunteers and support functions as required to see a successful and entertaining tournament hosted in our great City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder.

From all of the board and members of the Goldfields Golf Club, we hope all enjoy the PGA tournament and the hospitality of Kalgoorlie Boulder and that all players and amateurs play well. We wish you all success and an enjoyable and competitive tournament.

Warm Regards

GRAEME WILMOT Chairman – Goldfields Golf Club

WELCOME FROM THE WA GOVERNMENT

The McGowan Government is a proud sponsor of the TX Civil & Logistics WA PGA Championships through its Regional Events Scheme.

The scheme was devised as a way for the Government to support smaller and emerging events in regional Western Australia to boost tourism, increase community vibrancy and participation, and develop regional areas.

The Regional Events Scheme also plays an important role in positioning Western Australia as an exciting destination to visit and a great place to live by showcasing and promoting a region’s unique and diverse attractions.

Seventy-seven regional events across the State have been funded through the 2020-21 Regional Events Scheme, including the Regional Aboriginal Events Scheme, with a funding pool of $150,000 exclusively allocated to events delivering Aboriginal activities and experiences.

This is the biggest number of events ever supported through the scheme and is part of the Government’s response to COVID-19 in helping to rebuild regional economies and communities that have been set back as a result of the pandemic.

Tourism is a key part of the Government’s plan to energise the economy, create jobs and develop business opportunities, especially in regional Western Australia.

Events play an important role in this plan, with the Government sponsoring a range of sporting, cultural, arts and culinary events across the State, through Tourism Western Australia, to attract visitors, encourage them to stay longer, disperse further and do more while they are here.

We hope everyone enjoys this event and takes the time to explore the Goldfields-Esperance region.

HON ALANNAH MACTIERNAN MLC Minister for Regional Development

PLAYER PROFILES

Michael Long enters the 2020 TX Civil & Logistics WA PGA Championship as the tournament’s most recent winner in the current field having claimed victory in 2018. Long has since cemented his status amongst the most competitive not only on the local Ladbrokes Legends Tour, but also on the newly-named Legends Tour in Europe, having won the final stage of the then Staysure Tour’s Qualifying School. While he may not be able to reap its rewards until 2021, if recent form is anything to go by Long will be amongst the most competitive on the fairways of Kalgoorlie Golf Course in 2020.

A T14 finish at the 2019 TX Civil & Logistics WA PGA Championship set the ball rolling for Brett Rumford to record a number of positive results across the ISPS HANDA PGA Tour of Australasia’s summer of golf, following his recovery from a wrist injury sustained in 2018. Winner of the 2015 WA PGA Championship at Kalgoorlie Golf Course, Rumford returns in 2020 with the aim to continue his 2019 form and the chance to compete against Western Australia’s best for the WA PGA Championship trophy.

Jarryd Felton will cast aside memories of 2019’s narrow loss to Darren Beck when he takes to the fairways of Kalgoorlie Golf Course in 2020. Prior to the suspension of the ISPS HANDA PGA Tour of Australasia season in April, the young West Australian was amongst the tour’s most competitive with results of T10 and T12 in his last two starts at the Isuzu Queensland Open and New Zealand Open respectively. A focus on strength and overall fitness during the COVID-19 layoff is expected to enhance Felton’s game and will be put to the test across three rounds in Kalgoorlie.

The WA swing of the Ladbrokes Pro-Am Series has proven particularly fruitful for Rick Kulacz who has enjoyed an extended stay in his home state of WA in 2020. A win with fellow Professional Daniel Fox in the WA PGA Foursomes Championship, followed by a victory at the CITIC Pacific Mining Karratha Pro-Am alongside Scott Strange and a tie for second place at the Roy Hill Port Headland Classic have labelled the two-time Asian Tour winner as one of the state’s most competitive ahead of the TX Civil & Logistics WA PGA Championship. From the North West’s sand greens to the lush green fairways of Kalgoorlie Golf Course, Kulacz is expected to bring his A-game to Kalgoorlie this week.

For the first time in many years Scott Strange has spent the winter months in Australia instead of travelling and competing across Japan and Asia. The two-time European Tour winner has made the most of his time at home in Western Australia, claiming a win on the Ladbrokes Pro-Am Series and refining his game ahead of the 2020 TX Civil & Logistics WA PGA Championship. The tournament will be Strange’s first appearance at Kalgoorlie Golf Course since 2013 where the conditions are sure to test the 43-year-old’s game.

Daniel Fox came agonisingly close to winning his home state’s PGA Championship in 2015 and five years later the goal remains. Intent on adding a TX Civil & Logistics WA PGA Championship title to sit alongside his 2015 WA Open win, Fox will draw on positive past experiences at Kalgoorlie Golf Course when he returns to compete against the best of the west in 2020. Traditionally an extremely competitive player at his home events, Fox will be one to watch.

PAST CHAMPIONS CHASE HISTORY AT WA PGA

Former TX Civil & Logistics WA PGA champions Michael Long and Brett Rumford are set to light up Kalgoorlie Golf Course from 8-10 October alongside a host of the state’s best talent.

Long, a two-time PGA TOUR winner and Rumford, a renowned short-game master with six European Tour titles to his name will headline a field of 45 Professionals and 15 elite amateurs set to compete across 54 holes for a share in $80,000.

With the highs and lows that punctuate a round at the Graham Marsh-designed course firmly engrained in their memories, the duo will draw on all their knowledge when they take to the lush green fairways and bold red dirt of Kalgoorlie.

“The course is great and it’s always a good test,” said Long, who won the 2018 WA PGA Championship with a course record-equalling final round of 8-under 64.

“It’s a demanding course and it tests all parts of your game. Your driving, your irons into the green and then once you get onto the green it’s just the putting. The greens are very undulating.”

A string of impressive results on the Ladbrokes Pro-Am Series’ WA swing in August, including a win at the two-round Roy Hill Port Hedland Pro-Am, put Long in the box seat for a third victory if he is able to overcome the competitive field that stands in his way.

Rumford enters the 2020 tournament buoyed by a T14 finish in 2019 but with few tournament playing opportunities on offer in recent times, the 43-year-old will rely on past experience in his quest for a second WA PGA title.

While completing the PGA of Australia’s Bridging Program and teaching the sport’s up and coming talent the tricks of the trade at Wembley Golf Course has limited his playing time, the 2015 WA PGA Champion’s expertise will hold the key to a strong result in 2020.

This year the pair will not only need to combat the challenging layout but also a field of Western Australia’s best and brightest talent including amateurs Hayden Hopewell and Haydn Barron, established stars Daniel Fox and Rick Kulacz as well as 2019 runner-up Jarryd Felton.

The 2020 TX Civil & Logistics WA PGA Championship is a best of the west battle that will crown the Championship’s ninth winner at Kalgoorlie Golf Course.
