TxDOT InspectTech Training Presentation
Presented by Bentley Systems
2 | WWW.BENTLEY.COM | © 2016 Bentley Systems, Incorporated
Hello – Introductions
• Who’s presenting?
• What is Bentley Systems?– No. 1 Transportation Design Firm that designs and sells infrastructure
software.
– Over 40 US DoT’s and hundreds of agencies use Bentley flagship products such as MicroStation, Bentley Civil and LEAP.
– Bentley is involved in projects that span the globe and is a recent partner with Microsoft to advance data environments for Bentley’s infrastructure projects and assets. Think cloud computing.
– Bentley hosts “The Year In Infrastructure Conference” which “is globally recognized as the leading forum for identifying trends, sharing ideas, and adopting technologies to address the current priorities and opportunities impacting the infrastructure industry”.
– InspectTech is on of Bentley’s Asset Reliability Software offerings

InspectTech.. Why am I here?
• What drove the choice to InspectTech?
– Federal regulations under the Moving Ahead in Progress in the 21st Century (MAP-21) law requires TxDOT to enhance its bridge inspection process. MAP-21 requires TxDOT to use new National Bridge Elements (NBE) for data collection on all bridge inspections, and produce reports based upon new requirements for bridge performance management.
– InspectTech is also highly configurable. After the initial implementation is completed, TxDOT Central and District personnel will have the flexibility to grow parts of InspectTech without requiring additional Bentley support.
– Additionally, InspectTech will be the engine that populates AASHTOWare Bridge Management System (BrM), which will give Bridge Division deeper asset management functionality. BrM was previously known as “Pontis” which Pontex used as an application base.
• Why are you here? What are we doing here?

Before we begin
• The site we are training on:
– Was tested against heavily, meaning odd occurrences that we will not see in production.
– Is not fully configured for the sake of time and to hasten your movement as you follow along.
– Is in flux due to background work. We will encounter some issues that I will avoid spending too much time on except to say “this is not something you will encounter”.
• Questions are welcome, sometimes answers will be triaged.
• Please refrain from getting too far ahead.
• You may encounter differences then those around you. Don’t be alarmed.
5 | WWW.BENTLEY.COM | © 2016 Bentley Systems, Incorporated
Using a Website over Using a Hard Application• As Pontex users, some of this will be very familiar to you.
• Sometimes using a website for long periods of time after using a full blown application will feel odd.– Single clicks instead of double clicks.
– With some exceptions, what you’ve done is already committed with no “Save” button to commit it.
• However, for most browsers, “Ctrl-Z” will revert your value if you made an accident. Ultimately, it is always possible to return to Asset Values.
– Did you step away? Refresh the page before returning to data entry.
>
– ProTip - “Ctrl-F” your way through life.
– ProTip – Your not limited to just one browser window. Open up separate tabs!
– InspectTech supports Internet Explorer, FireFox and Chrome, I prefer the last one.

Language Used: Catch Phrases
• Some things we will continually talk about will be in green. These are some things to watch for.
• “Used to be, now is” – The InspectTech implementation project leveraged existing requirements from Pontex heavily (which leveraged requirements from BRINSAP). I will attempt to point out where the differences are explicit to avoid confusion as much as possible.
• “ProTip” – Testing of the system by District and Central staff revealed some usability patterns which are best to pick up now.

User Roles
• Like with Pontex, user roles dictate what you can do within the system.
• Used to be in Pontex that you had to have multiple user roles in order to achieve different actions. You would need to select the role you required.
• Now in InspectTech, you will have the most access out of any role you have. Most folks will be associated to just one role, but there are exceptions such as if you work for multiple contracting agencies or your granted additional administrative access temporarily.

User Groups
• Used to be known as “Districts” and still has that feel to it, but in InspectTech, User Groups are now a container for users that grants them permissions to certain bridges.
• TxDOT District Staff – Associated to the group of their “district” and has full time access to that district.
• Consultant Firms – Associated to groups named after the firm and access will change pending on which project they are associated to.

Logging Out
• If you are in the module interface (not in an input form, output report, or configuration screen), you will always see the Logout screen.
• With the TxDOT Single Sign On Solution – My advice is to log out at the end of your shift.
• ProTip - Did you step away? Refresh the page before returning to data entry. If you arrive back at the login screen, you will need to log back in. You do NOT want to spend any time on an inactive page.
19 | WWW.BENTLEY.COM | © 2016 Bentley Systems, Incorporated
Asset Tree Navigation
• The Asset Tree Performs Three Functions1. Direct Navigation using the triple cigarette icon.
2. Direct Search (Used to be able to find your asset with dashes in Pontex, now asset names do NOT contain those).
3. Show more results for… takes you to a deeper search screen.
4. ProTip – Did you copy and paste an asset name in the search box? It may take a full 2-3 obnoxious seconds to respond. For a much faster result, delete and retype that last character

Scheduling Details
• s
• By Go-Live all existing bridges in the system will have a recurring inspection scheduled based on their NBI 90 date.
• Edit Recurring Schedule will result in an error on Routine assets. With Central approved acceptations (flood paths, specials), Routine inspections recur every 24 months.
• Export To Excel will allow you to take the schedule to excel. It may be helpful for work specs with hundreds of bridges to assign on “paper” first.
• Edit Schedule Details in conglomeration with check boxes will allow you to assign Team Leaders for inspection.
33 | WWW.BENTLEY.COM | © 2016 Bentley Systems, Incorporated
Inspection Schedules
• Inspection Schedules and Report Filters are designed to help Inspectors and Agents identify the work that is assigned to them as well as assist others with identifying ongoing reports.
• 1 – Note the State of the Inspection is due. 2 – Also note you can export.
34 | WWW.BENTLEY.COM | © 2016 Bentley Systems, Incorporated
Why Do You Keep Saying Asset?
• Once you navigate to an asset…
• Used to be called “Bridges” in Pontex, you will now know them as “Assets”. Right now the only type of Asset in InspectTech is “Bridge”, but stay tuned..
• Pontex split data into “Bridge Data” and “Inspection Data” while InspectTech cuts data into “Asset Values” (also called “Current Values”) and Report Values.
• Asset Values (Current Values) are the results of a committed Report which will be committed to the NBI and NBE Tapes.
• Report Values are pending approval and are not yet a part of the NBI tape.

4 – Previous Files. ProTip – Like previous
reports, files from Pontex will take several weeks
to be available.
45 | WWW.BENTLEY.COM | © 2016 Bentley Systems, Incorporated
Different File Types• A great deal of the files in Pontex are PDF files.
• InspectTech allows a variety of photos.
– Photo is the primary upload type when averaging all users.
– Sketches also have an individual output report page.
– Maps are generated from the Location Map page (next slide)
– Audio, Video, and Other File files are other classifications.
– These are admin configurable so expect to see differences from today, the big restriction being that values like “Photo” must be image files.
46 | WWW.BENTLEY.COM | © 2016 Bentley Systems, Incorporated
Location Map
• The Location Map will reference the GPS coordinates to identify where the bridge is in Google Maps. You can manipulate then save the image for cover photos or report details.
47 | WWW.BENTLEY.COM | © 2016 Bentley Systems, Incorporated
Forms Page
• The Forms Page will allow you to show / hide forms. While limited in function for now, in the event TxDOT Central and District add additional forms, open inspections may require you to enable them here.
48 | WWW.BENTLEY.COM | © 2016 Bentley Systems, Incorporated
TxDOT SI&A Form
• This is the crucial form in InspectTech.
• These values used to be distributed across several tabs in Pontex and are now found across the entire SI&A Page.
• The majority of fields are identical to Pontex fields, however it is extremely important that you note the differences.
49 | WWW.BENTLEY.COM | © 2016 Bentley Systems, Incorporated
TxDOT SI&A Notable Items• (1) STATE CODE appears now on Input Forms / Output Reports. Will
require no action as it automatically defaults to Texas upon both report and asset creation.
• (3) COUNTY CODE used to be a field, will now be a dropdown.
• (5.2) ROUTE SYSTEM some values have been returned to FHWA values. The descriptions are the same, but an 11 will now appear as a 1 for example. All TxDOT values within the dropdown remain the same.
• (10) INV RTE, MIN VERT CLEARANCE, (53) VERTICAL CLEARANCE OVER BRIDGE ROADWAY, and (54.2) MIN. VERTICAL UNDERCLEARANCE are now entered in Decimal Feet rather than Feet Inches. The majority of these values were “No Ceiling 99.99” values but all existing values were converted.
50 | WWW.BENTLEY.COM | © 2016 Bentley Systems, Incorporated
TxDOT SI&A Notable Items Continued…• DMS Latitude and Longitude have been removed. These are still
identifiable from the NBI Values Check page.
• InspectTech offers additional FHWA fields for (21) MAINTENANCE RESPONSIBILITY and (22) OWNER
• NBI (32) APPROACH ROADWAY WIDTH, (39) NAV VERT CLEARANCE, (55.2) MIN LATERAL UNDERCLEARANCE ON RIGHT, (64.2) OPERATING RATING GROSS LOADING, (66.2) INVENTORY RATING GROSS RATING, (76) LENGTH OF STRUCTURE IMPROVEMENT, and (40) NAV HORIZONTAL CLEARANCE now allow additional points of precision.
• (63) METHOD USED TO DETERMINE OPERATING RATING and (65.1) METHOD USED TO DETERMINE INVENTORY RATING now contain additional Load Values determined by FHWA
51 | WWW.BENTLEY.COM | © 2016 Bentley Systems, Incorporated
TxDOT SI&A Notable Items Continued…
Deck values within Structure Type & Configuration appear blank in a sea of Blank-Not Applicable. This looks off, but is actually correct since “Deck” items do not have blanks, but instead “N-Not applicable” values.
52 | WWW.BENTLEY.COM | © 2016 Bentley Systems, Incorporated
TxDOT SI&A Required Fields
• Required Fields will enforce that a Report cannot be brought forward until the field contains a value.
• For training purposes, only (71) and (72) are made required. After Go-Live, there were will be many required fields which will ensure that the establishment of the first report on a new bridge contains as much good information as possible.
X
53 | WWW.BENTLEY.COM | © 2016 Bentley Systems, Incorporated
TxDOT SI&A Restricted Fields
• Required Fields will enforce that only a certain value can be entered into the field. See that Field Info is helpful here as it will provide the rules.
• For training purposes, only (30) is restricted. After Go-Live, several fields such as year fields and (11.2) REFERENCE MARKER AND DISPLACEMENT will be restricted.
54 | WWW.BENTLEY.COM | © 2016 Bentley Systems, Incorporated
TxDOT Roadway (Under Record) Form
• The amount of Under Records can be selected. FHWA allows up to 26 Under Records to be reported and InspectTech mirrors this. Initially, InspectTech will either contain 0 or 1 Under Records but eventually TxDOT may drive to populate additional Under Record data.
• At this point, Pontex and InspectTech cut different ways again (like Bridge and Inspection vs Asset and Report values). InspectTech’s allowance of more than one Under Record means the SI&A page will primarily represent the On Record (or Railroad, Pedestrian, Utility) and Under Records (Roadway) Data Below.
55 | WWW.BENTLEY.COM | © 2016 Bentley Systems, Incorporated
Intersecting Values In InspectTech
• There are many integrations behind Pontex that must continue to function as we implement InspectTech.
• Pontex used to identify Inventory and Intersecting by tabs, InspectTech must now identify it directly and will need your help.
No Under Records Road ID must = 1 to submit report
One Under Record Road ID in both Under Record and On Record
must indicate which is “1” and which is “2”.
Both must have been selected.
Multiple Under Records Road ID in both Under Record and On Record
must indicate which is “1” and which is “2”.
Both must have been selected. All other values
must be “Other Intersecting Route”.
56 | WWW.BENTLEY.COM | © 2016 Bentley Systems, Incorporated
Executive Summary
• Acts as a location where a synopsis of the report can be drafted.
57 | WWW.BENTLEY.COM | © 2016 Bentley Systems, Incorporated
NBI Validation Tools
• NBI Values Check – This page will show what was entered on the SI&A page and what it’s federal translation will be on the tape. Note it will NOT show what was entered Structure Type & Information values but will show the FHWA translation for those items (i.e. 43 and 44).
• NBI Calculations – Will show the values for 67, 68, 69, the Sufficiency Rating and the NBI Output String. This will include the math performed to arrive at these values using what was entered in InspectTech.
• NBI Error Check – This is exclusively a warning page designed to throw potential errors that may appear for FHWA submissions. This page may help, but may also provide false positives and is best as a confirmation guide than a rule of thumb page.
