Travel tip If you are booking a flight or a train journey within China, you cannot usually buy a return ticket. This may change in the future, but at present, you need to be prepared to buy your return ticket when you get to your destination.

Travel tip If you are travelling on business, have your name translated into Chinese and printed onto your business cards. This draws you closer to the Chinese people you are dealing with. Present your business card with both hands extended and receive your Chinese counterpart's card in the same fashion.

12 You are in a taxi and want to go somewhere straight ahead. What do you say?

13 Count backwards from 12 to 7.

Travel tip Tipping is not expected, but it is acceptable.

14 The bill isn't right. You've been charged too much for the wine. What would you say?

16 Add er, si and wu, then say 'at 11 o'clock' - all in Chinese.
